www.hardcoregaming101.net/lastsurvivor/lastsurvivor.htmDigging up a super obscure Sega arcade game here, it's actually unemulated in MAME but received an FM Towns port, which is what was reviewed. It's actually a very early deathmatch first(ish) person maze game, what may be the first one in Japan (and appears to be the second ever, after MIDI Maze/Faceball). I had deja vu playing this, like I SWEAR I remember seeing this in an arcade when I was very young, but I can't seem to find any evidence of an English release, so it may just be that early onset dementia again.

Seems inspired by Xybots to me.

That's a very good connection I hadn't thought to make - I've never actually played Xybots for more than five minutes. The basic setup seems identical. I'll have to boot it up before the article goes live to draw comparisons. Xybots was 87, Last Survivor was 88.
Although, Xybots was cooperative play and was just limited to two players on the same machine, I think?

Yup. Also apparently the next version of MAME is finally gonna emulate Last Survivor, since they could finally find a board of the game (a working one, even!) www.aarongiles.com/?m=201208

That's great to hear. Wonder why it was so hard to find that it just never popped up?

I guess it was a massively rare release? Also the fact that those batteries might have died by then.

Two mistakes: "eight "human" character" > should be "characters"; make your ways > should be "your way".

Video of Last Survivor running on MAME! Also cool little tidbit; Last Survivor is mentioned in the ending of Golden Axe, upper left corner:

From the looks of it, it definitely runs smoother than on the FM Towns, though the speed seems about the same.

It's rare becuase Last Survivor (& Desert Breaker) where exclusive to Club SEGA arcades. Though their are exceptions outside Japan (I remember playing Desert Breaker in a Mall Arcade in Indonesia).

Last Survivor also shows up as an achievement in Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing.

That's great to hear. Wonder why it was so hard to find that it just never popped up? I'm the one who acquired the board and dumped it except for the encrypted portion which other members helped with. The board was only put on location in Sega owned arcades so very few made it into the second hand market and has a suicide battery (Sega stopped repairing these boards over a decade ago). The few existing arcade PCB shops in Akihabara have confirmed that it has been at least 14-15 years since they last saw one. The game also uses unique joysticks which rotate into 4 positions for changing views. I've yet to see one of these sticks in person and likely never will at this rate.

Desert Breaker had a World version. Bullet, Last Survivor and Riot City did not have foreign releases.
