Sounds really interesting. Wonder how well a stealth-based sandbox game would work. The closest was the first Assassin's Creed because of the almost near constant guard aggro, which got annoying after awhile. Hopefully they can do a better job with stealth mechanics than Assassin's Creed. I've only played the first two games, but stealth was neither necessary nor useful. Counterattacks are so easy and powerful that the games were less about stealthy assassinations and more about running around and murdering everyone right in the middle of town because you are an unstoppable death machine. I mean, you can try to be stealthy, but since it's generally faster and more efficient to just brute force everything, there's really no reason to use stealth. That's always been my biggest gripe with Assassin's Creed. The Hitman games do a far better job as assassination games.

Stealth in the AC games is really only needed if you're trying to get all of the trophies/achievements and full memory synch. It can be helpful at other times (especially in the first game), but it mostly takes a backseat to the crazy parkour awesomeness and is more for added flavor.
I used it a lot more than I thought I would in Revelations, actually. It's fun trying to mix stealth with speed on some of the challenges.

I finally watched the trailer and it was actually pretty impressive. I still have yet to play Peace Walker so I don't think I have the context to really understand what happened, but man that engine is beautiful.

I think of Assassin's Creed more as an open-world swashbuckler than a stealth game.
And frankly, I think this looks and sounds pretty awesome. Outside of 4, and the portable games, MG typically has had interconnected areas, anyway. An open-world in some ways sounds almost like an evolution of what they've had than a gimmick.
I just hope it still has some sense of focus and doesn't bog down the experience with too many repetitive "side activities". Though I guess a system like Just Cause 2 could work.

Additional footage from the PAX demo that was left out from the officially released trailer. I'm just glad they're developing this for consoles and not on a portable. Attachments:

That looks pretty great so far. I'm just hoping that they have some decent boss battles - Peace Walker's Metal Gear battles were actually really good and exciting, but I hated the vehicle ones and how repetitive they were - and they just got worse by throwing more and more backup soldiers at you.
Didn't stop me from getting 1000g on the 360 version, but still...

How far away are we from having more games starring Big Boss than actually starring Solid Snake?

Not that far off actually. If you remove the MSX2 games and count only the "Solid" series, there's definitely just as many titles starring Naked Snake as there are starring Solid Snake and MGS2 barely counts since Snake was only playable in the prologue. Of course, that's not counting all those weird spinoffs starring Solid Snake (Ghost Babel, Acid, ect.). Then there's MPO's questionable status in the MGS canon.
Solid Snake: MG1, MG2, MGS1, MGS2 (Tanker), MGS4 Big Boss: MGS3, Portable Ops, Peace Walker, Ground Zeroes

I wonder if he's going to try to do a game that retells the events of the original Metal Gear, but from Big Boss's perspective. Actually, I wonder if Ground Zeroes is that game.
EDIT: Nevermind, watched the trailer and this is clearly not that game. The article on Siliconera claims Ground Zeroes is supposed to serve as a "prologue" to MGS5 though. So who knows there. I guess this means MGS5 won't be World War II with The Boss after all.

The Fox Engine seems to be really impressive, in another dimension Kojima is making a Policenauts and Snatcher sequel using it... Honestly, I am just bitter because this game looks to directly follow the events of Peace Walker which I could not tolerate for more than 2 hours. It seems I will have to force myself to get beat that game so I have some context for MGS: Ground Zeroes. Is Peace Walker on the Vita store yet? I think I would like the controls better on that version.

Everything still looks like it's made out of plastic. Is this some sort of directive from Kojima himself? I really wish they'd stop doing that.

Yeah, i thought the rocks were shrinkwrapped in blisterpacks, but else this looks really interesting imo. An yeah, I also have to finally play Peace Walker, though I'm not a huge friend of its cutscene's look. They remind me too much of flash animation^^'. Normally I really love MGS long cutscenes.

Wonder what the hangup is there; if perhaps because they're trying to make the engine usable on modern hardware but support their target detail level, they're not able to allocate the necessary resources for the additional shaders they need to get rid of that without taking a major hit to the framerate. As awesome as it'll be to be able to solve that problem within a generation, we're still going to be fighting to keep stuff running at decent framerates as developers keep pushing the detail levels further and further (especially since everyone wants 1080p to be commonplace next gen). An yeah, I also have to finally play Peace Walker, though I'm not a huge friend of its cutscene's look. They remind me too much of flash animation^^'. Normally I really love MGS long cutscenes. You get used to Ashley Wood's style and it'll really grow on you.
