I was just talking about 3d Fighters with an old buddy of mine in the UK.
Pretty much we reached the conclusion Virtua Fighter is over rated but 2 was the best it got and that the best 3d Fighters are Soul Calibur, Tekken and DOA are the kings of 3d Fighters.
I also think Fighting Vipers was superior to Virtua Fighter (and Last Bronx got a mention in the convo)
Opinions on the best 3d fighters?
and feel free to defend Virtua fighter I think that no matter how deep VF is you can still get by frantically mashing the punch button. plus....the boss is the same in EVERY game.

Virtua Figher overrated? I always thought Tekken was over rated. It just so happens that I'm more of a 2D fighter fan, but I do enjoy Soul Caliber and Power Stone.

I was playing Virtua Fighter with one hand in a british airport owning people and eating a nice pastry at the same time. what's that say about VF's Depth? I love 2d fighters too but I'm fed up with all the rehash in 2d.

I haven't played too many 3D fighters...my experience is mostly limited to Dream Factory's games (Tobal and Ehrgeiz) and a demo of Dead or Alive 2.

VF4: evo is not only deepest 3D fighting game, it's the deepest fighting game generally. And that being said by a 2D fighters fan, usually I don't play 3D fighters.
DOA is barley a real fighting game, it's Rock-Scissors-Paper with virtual characters.

I've had some pretty intense DOA action going on over XBOX live even WITH lag.

DOA is barley a real fighting game, it's Rock-Scissors-Paper with virtual characters. can't that be said about most fighters though? Not Exactly. Rock-Scissors-Paper idea is always the basic in 3D fighters (in 2D fighters it's different), but the good ones are always evolving from that to create depth. First of all, the basics like hit-throw-counter shouldn't be equally effective. In DOA the counters are equally effective to hit and throw because they are so easy to use. That's bad. In games like VF and Tekken counters are hard to use in effective way, so they are barley being used. Second thing is that in the good 3D fighters you have advanced moves that can break the Rock-Scissors-Paper circle like the Korean Back Dash in Tekken or the Fuzzy Guard in Soul Calibur or Minami Step in VF. DOA doesn't have that things, all it has is the simple Rock-Scissors-Paper game.

I've got to honestly say though, beating people at a british airport at virtual fighter doesn't prove much about the game at all, now if you were in a popular japanese arcade during a virtual fighter 4 tournament then maybe you'd have a case going.
Also should the likes of Powerstone be included with 3d fighters since I assume the topic is more on fixed fighting/2.5d movement 3d fighters rather then the arena based style of games like Powerstone, Destrega etc (I love Powerstone and Destrega btw, superb games).

For me THE best 3D fighter at the moment is Tekken 3 for PS1, mostly because I haven't played many other 3D fighter games. Other decent one is Rival Schools for PS1.

I would say... for solo fighting I prefer Soul Blade/Edge for its quest mode, music and weapon unlocking fun. For multiplayer fun- I never found anyone objecting to a game of Project Justice- even people who hated 3d fighters I'm not saying those two are the best- but damn fine examples!

I think Soul Edge is the best in it's series, Between Cervantes' Kitanas and Li Long who makes that Elivis Impersonator Maxi his bitch.
I was just playing around of DOA 2 Ultimate.......God I love DOA
DOA>Tekken>VF

For me it's VF>Tekken>DOA, but Tech Romancer rules them all And I might be the only one who prefers Power Stone 2 over 1.

I'm a huge Soul Calibur fan and I have a lot of fun with the DoA games. VF4 Evolution is great but I never really got into it as much as the other two. I also love the Power Stone series and bought both right when they came out. Just a side note, people looking for Power Stone-like game should try out the new One Piece: Grand Adventure for the GC. It plays a lot like it but is unfortunately only 2-player. For a 4-player game try finding a copy of the rare Rave Master for GC. I have not played it personally but from what I hear it's great if you love Power Stone. I have my copy of Rave Master on order right now and I'll tell you guys about it when I finally get it.
