They really should have called it Sonic 5 because it's more built off the ideas of the Aspect (8-bit) Sonic games. The first one's really frustrating/cheap but the second one's been pretty fun so far from what I've played of it. Having Tails around certainly mitigates the INSTANT DEATH issue usually.
I mean, it's really a handheld Sonic game in its design, just this time on mobile phones and tablets rather than, say, GBA or DS.

So, there's been a game in development for a while, called Freedom Planet. Early on, it started off as a game set in the Sonic universe, with new characters. Eventually, though, it split off into its own thing entirely, with the character design and gameplay mechanics changed around to be just a bit more original. Wait, really? It doesn't say so anywhere on their kickstarter site and even on the topic of why it looks so similar to Sonic, they just go out and say "NO IT DOESN'T". Plus, when I read here that it was at some point supposed to be a real Sonic game, I assumed it would really be developed by Treasure, since they might eventually get the rights to make such a game. The whole thread really is a tad misleading, but at least the game looks pretty nice, I have to admit.

There, I changed the thread title. If people quit looking at this thread because of the title, I'm changing it back, and it's going to stay where it was. :V Honestly, I thought the thread title was just fine, mostly because it actually DOES play what a Treasure game made by Sonic would play like.
Also, I really don't get what the big issue is if it looks like Sonic. It was actually a lot more similar before, and apparently they've been speaking with lawyers and such to make sure it's actually original stuff. I mean, sure, I guess there are reasons why the franchise could leave a poor taste in people's mouth. I just want to ask people to try the demo before they judge it by how it looks.

For a Sonic-like game it's freaking awesome. Judging from the trailer, the developers are very talented and the gameplay looks enjoyable. I can't wait for the final release.

I don't think I've enjoyed a Sonic game since Sonic & Knuckles.

Not even Sonic Rush series and Sonic Colors for DS? It's the best 2D Sonic games I've played since Sonic 3.

I enjoyed the original games when I was like... 12. Can't get into them at all now. I bought Sonic Generations (which everyone was gushing over), and it left me completely cold. The 2D levels are tolerable, but nothing great, and the 3D levels are anti-fun as far as I'm concerned.
I've always been more of a Mario guy.

What about sonic 4 I'll stand on record as saying I genuinely enjoyed Sonic 4 episode 1 for what it was. It was anything but a return to form, but whatever, I had fun. But man, episode 2 was a mess.

Even speaking as a relative not-fan of Sonic, I played Freedom Planet's demo and I do rather like what I'm seeing. The two playable characters seem very different in style to each other (though the first one seems a lot easier than the second).

I gotta say, it does bring a smile to my face to see them reaching all their stretch goals in the Kickstarter. Might just pitch in myself; art may be derivative, but it still looks kinda fun and cute.

So, hey, minor news on this, if anybody's interested: The developer's been doing some tweaking, and here's the result of it: The new HUD's not bad, actually, and it kind of reminds me of a clearer, less cluttered version of SNES Sparkster's HUD. Which will hopefully clear up some of the Sonic comparisons. They've also apparently removed voluntary rolling, which I'm not sure how I feel about that. On one hand, it'll definitely help give the game more of its own feel, but on the other hand... I dunno, I like rolling.

Bobinator posted this in the indie games thread, but I think it deserves a thread of it's very own, so as to be more visible. So I'm just going to recap what Bob and I already had to say about the game here: So, I know I made a thread about this a while back, but I don't feel like digging it up. If anybody wants me to make a new thread, I can go for it. That said... Do you like Sonic? Do you like Ristar? Do you like Mega Man X? Do you like Gunstar Heroes? Do you like Rocket Knight Adventures? You know what, do you like any 2D action platformers in general? Good enough. You want Freedom Planet. Like, I'd say, at times that it outclasses Sonic 3. That is not something I'd say lightly. I know, it looks a lot like a Sonic game. And to be fair, they do take a lot of inspiration from those games. On the other hand, though, they pull a lot of ideas from a lot of other classic action games on the Genesis and put it together into something that's pretty unique on its own. Think of it like this: What Shovel Knight was to the NES, this is to the Genesis. (Although I'd say it's more like a Saturn game, but still.) You have characters that play pretty differently from each other, to the point where they each get a unique level to play through, a lot of secrets and alternate paths, and my favorite part, some really good boss fights. It also has what I'd basically call the hypest final level AND boss I've played through in a very, very long time. It gets pretty rough, at some points, especially some of the later bosses. You do, however, get unlimited lives. Also, there's a demo here. You get a pretty good amount of gameplay, but the best boss fights are in the full version. It's currently $15 on Steam, but I'd say it's totally worth it if you like any of the aforementioned games. Also, fun. I actually bought Freedom Planet yesterday. I was loading up Steam to play some Quake and I noticed it on the "featured games" list. The title sounded familiar, so I looked into it more and recognized it as the game you mentioned however long ago it was. The trailer on the store page was enough to fully sell me on the game. It's freaking amazing, by the way. Most of this post is basically just going to be echoing Bob, but Freedom Planet really does channel the DNA of all the best Genesis platformers. Sonic and Rocket Knight are the two strongest and most obvious influences, but there's a noticeable amount of Gunstar Heroes in there as well in the form of some clever and fun boss fights (there's even a shmup stage and a boss that is very similar to Seven Force). The game feels good to play, and visually it's gorgeous. Despite taking gameplay cues from the Genesis' glory days, the graphics are a lot more like what you would see on the Saturn. It's got a ton of content, and you can expect to spend about 2-3 hours clearing the game your first time through (plus there are at least two other characters to play as, and I suspect there's a fourth unlockable character as well). The game offers a solid challenge as well... whereas I cleared Shovel Knight with a mere two deaths on my first run through, Freedom Planet ate nearly two dozen lives before the credits rolled, and some of the endgame bosses in particular offered delightfully intense battles. This is an incredibly good game. I like it more than Shovel Knight. It's worth playing.
