Can the voice acting be disabled? Please? PLEASE!? Even better, the game has a "classic mode" that just plain disables any and all story and cutscenes. You'll still have to hear the occasional voice call when using a special ability or whatever, but nothing really annoying.

I actually really like the Classic mode because you're basically getting the "Show, don't tell" storytelling that Sonic 3 did really well. You do get the occasional bit of voice acting, but it's generally in cases like "This boss is going to use his big attack look out" or "The bad guy is going to dick you over when he's done talking, get ready to move". You can't avoid all of it, but oh well. Also, I updated the original post to show off the newest video and demo. Changed the thread title, too. Nobody bitch about this one, because it's about as accurate as it gets. Also, to answer Fenyman's question, there'll be two more characters as free DLC down the line. That'll be pretty fun, given that we'll probably be getting new levels and bosses with that.

This looks almost identical to the Sonic Rush physic quirks.

If that video is any indication, they basically ARE Sonic Rush's physics. Odd how I never noticed that from the videos or demos though...

That almost has to be intentional at this point. Anyone making a Sonic (style) game at this point in time would presumably be doing testing for those kinds of issues.

Even if they didn't test for them, it's probably not that noticeable during regular play. I didn't even realize how bizarre Sonic Rush's physics were until well after I had finished playing it and started to see videos criticizing it.

I'm pretty sure the Sonic Cycle quit being relevant back in 2010, mostly because Sonic Colors actually made it go backwards. We started at the end of the cycle, where nobody thought it would be any good. Then came the screenshots and video, which made people start getting hopeful, and then when the game came out, it actually turned out to be better than anybody was expecting. Then we get Sonic Generations, which ended up being even better, and Sonic & Sega Transformed is pretty much the best kart racer out there since Crash Team Racing, in my opinion, so... Hear Hear! Transformed is incredible. I just wish it wasn't so tough to unlock all the characters. I've attempted playing through on 360, PC, 3DS and Mobile, and I can't catch a break when it comes to unlocking AGES - the only vehicle I want to drive Just purchased Freedom Planet also. Didn't know it was out! Thanks for the heads up!

Looks pretty good though I'm surprised by the low resolution seeing how mainstream platformers have been zooming out lately and it would help with the main complaint people have against Sonic games. Gonna try the demo now.

I'm 100% certain that the physics are the way they are intentionally. While Freedom Planet does draw a lot of inspiration from Sonic, it isn't a straight clone, and unlike classic Sonic games controlling your momentum isn't a major mechanic here. When you take into account the pace of the game, how levels are designed, how combat with enemies works, and what abilities the characters have, the physics used are definitely designed to minimize frustration. It works really well, and I think they made the right call... unless you're going out of your way to break the illusion, it's not something you'll really notice during normal gameplay.

*Added to my wishlist* Now to decide exactly what order to get this in comparison to Oniken, Muri, Escape Goat 2 or Volgarr the Viking. I've already decided Shovel Knight is next though

Honestly, they should have just left out ramps and loop-de-loops entirely, especially if they were trying to shed its origins as a Sonic fangame.

Having played the first couple of stages, I can safely say that Freedom Planet is pretty amazing so far. Level design is far beyond any fan-game, and the controls are superb. I'm not getting lost in the sprawling levels, for as large and open as it is, it's cohesive and laid out well. Everything seems to just 'make sense'. The boss-fights though, in particular the Mantis-type I just beat... SO MUCH FUN! I never say that about boss-fights. Ever.
Freedom Planet is to the love-letter to classic SEGA (not just Sonic) that Shovel Knight is to classic Nintendo.
LOVE IT.

How did I miss this?
I'm a huge fan of Sonic SatAM, and this basically looks like the Sonic SatAM game I always imagined -- epic semi-emo freedom-fighting storyline plus character drama and awesome Sonic the Hedgehog gameplay.
For those who've played it already, how's the story? Does it seem like an afterthought, or is it actually pretty well-written?
