If bootlegs were the concern, buying from the NY area but avoiding the West coast would be total backwards logic. I don't have any hesitation about buying used goods on eBay. I just look at the pictures, read the description, and ask questions if necessary. I do typically assume that the actual condition will be somewhat worse than described (unless I'm buying imports from Japanese sellers, then I expect the condition to be even better than described). Taking into factor all that and looking at the prices of completed listings, I decide if I want to bid and just how much I'm willing to pay. And if I do end up getting totally burned, which is extremely rare, I know that the system is set up to protect buyers WAY more than sellers, so I don't worry about the chances of getting my money back. Now Amazon, I very rarely touch their marketplace (and when I do, it's more likely for a book or something). The lack of pictures, decent info, and the overinflated prices kills it for me.

Bootlegs aren't the concern.
Someone trying to pass off a hopelessly damaged disc as playable is the concern.
As far as location goes, though, just having the payment hanging in limbo as the product travels is the concern, there.
I'd rather not wait the extra 2-3 days that it'd take for it to come from California.

I once ordered a copy of Spy Fiction for the PS2 on Amazon, but the disc had a dent in it (which noticeably tore the label as well) so it wouldn't run. Fortunately the seller refunded my money, without even requiring me to send it back

So going over my game completion list, in total (there are some "multicart" games on here, mostly dezaemon PS 1 games and two or so games where I settle for a "completion" without getting the credits) I have 1154 completed games. And yes. Your assumption about the extent of me having a life is indeed correct.

More in the domain of weasel plays fire emblem...
I've been creating unique weapons to train promoted characters with their new weapon skills. Of course, being me, I simply could not resist giving them silly or referential names... Vaike got a bow called The Educator, then a more advanced one called Professor. (Looks like Teach just got tenure!)
Chrom's newfound lance skills prompted me to give him a bronze lance called Kamina's Drill.
Gregor, who can now wield axes, got one called Commissar.
And this one had me stifling laughter on the bus: Lucina, who also now wields lances, has a javelin named HOOOOUUUHH!!!.
[edit] Also, Kellam has "Kellaxe", Olivia got a Steel Sword named "Mata Hari", and Maribelle used to have a unique ladle that I upgraded and renamed "Served!" (except it broke a few battles ago, and I don't know where to find another ladle).

I finally got around to beating the first Ys (PSP version). Ran into two infuriating moments but I managed to figure them out eventually.

More: Inigo now has two upgraded weapons, a sword called Montoya and a bow called Patricide (because "You Killed My Father, Prepare To Die" won't fit in the text box).
Doctorallosaurus, would one of those infuriating moments be the bat boss in the caves? =P

Yep, took me about 30 tries before I finally beat the bastard. Does he even have a pattern because there were a few times where he would stay in swarm mode for close to 5 minutes.

Ys 1 is basically total bullshit, especially the bosses, in my opinion. Hang in there though, because Ys 2 is completely fantastic, with tons of love put in the translation too!

I would do some horribly depraved things for an english localisation of that. Think I just had my bargain of the year, found Alien Soldier for 10 euros

That bat boss was annoying as heck and took forever to finally take down. Lots and lots of running around, always trying to stay juuuust far enough away to be able to attack the sucker quickly when he reformed...but sometimes it took so god damn long. Ugh.
The last boss was an obnoxious jerkface too, but once I got the hang of his pattern and beat him, I felt like I had accomplished something. With the bat, I just felt like I had finished an obligation that I had zero interest in ever undertaking again until years down the line when I forget just how fucking bad he was.

I think I mostly gave up on the MSX port of Barunba. I'm at the final boss and have no idea where to even shoot as I get to physical feedback in the fight. Had a similar problem with the level 3 boss just refusing to die for ages before I found an exploit to attack his weakspot and he still took forever.
So I might just forget it unless someone here would be willing to take a crack at it ?

The final boss of Ys 1 really is quite good considering how primitive the combat is. It is! It seems insanely difficult at first, and it is insanely difficult if you try to win with brute force, but if you pay attention and figure out the trick, the boss drops without much fuss. Good stuff given the era in which the game was made.
