Saw the Nintendo Direct....
Disappointed there's still no word from Square Enix on a collection for the series that has Soulblazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma and The Granstream Saga. (Was it called Heaven and Earth series?)
Nice to see Legend of Mana and Stubbs the Zombie (would be excited for it if I didn't already have it for Xbox. Likely not going to get it for Switch.)
There's Saga Frontier which looks interesting but I'm weary of it. I had some bad memories with the first games in the series on the Game Boy and sort of called off the franchise since. Probably would try it but would I have to deal with constantly buying weapons that can only be used a certain number of time before they wear out and have to buy new ones to replace them? (One of my most hated things in video games.) I'm hoping that's not the case.
I'll probably like the port of Skyward Sword but will they fix that one boss (The Imprisoned) who you fight three times and make it easier?

A couple of things I didn't notice previously - Nintendo are publishing the physical version of Hades which is really random. They're also publishing that DC Super Hero Girls game. Nice that they're putting out a couple of games for young girls. I think my niece would enjoy that.

Hopefully Son of Suzy Creamcheese will be happy. Yessssss! (But also not because they announced it way early, so now I have to wait a year) I expected Splatoon to be a once-per-gen franchise like Smash or Mario Kart, so I'm very surprised. I actually thought we were looking at a spinoff until the Inkling arrived in the city area. It's very cool that they're going all-in with the results of the Chaos vs Order splatfest. I expected it to have an effect on the single player, but the multiplayer seems affected too. I'm really curious to find out about the balance of new and old, aesthetically. And I hope salmonids are now more integrated into society a la Octolings from Splatoon 2 (pretty please add Salmonid equivalents of Inklings/Octolings). The rest of the Direct wasn't so exciting, I'm afraid. I've mentioned before that it doesn't really matter because there's too much to play anyway, but I'm just a little dissapointed by Nintendo's slow output this gen. The two biggest new game reveals (Triangle and Spaltoon 3) are both launching in 2022, so it didn't really deliver on the 1st half of 2021 promise IMO. What's curious to me is that Nintendo has recently started to reveal things only a couple months before release, but that doesn't seem to apply to really big titles like Splatoon 3. Anyway, some random thoughts: -Mario Golf is cool to see, though expected. I feel they're putting more effort in Mario Golf than Mario Tennis games these days. I might get this to add another game to play when I have friends over, though I'm also expecting NES Open Tournament Golf in the mail any day now. -Pyra and Mythra in Smash are cool. I haven't played any Xenoblade games, but I feel they're deserving (much more so than Sephiroth), and having two characters (probably semi-clones, but still) is a nice bonus. I was expecting Rex, seeing as he's the MC, but then again, I haven't played XC2 so I don't know each character's role exactly. Kind of weird how they split up Zelda and Sheik starting with Smash 4 but then re-added Pokémon Trainer and are gonna add another duo. Also it's kind of funny how they couldn't add Mai to the KoF stage because of possible age rating issues, but they can add Pyra. I guess it's the amount of skin that is the issue. -Project Triangle Strategy looks pretty neat. Probably will never get around to playing it, but I'm glad we're seeing another high-profile 3rd party game, and to see Square Enix use the 2D-HD graphical style again. I haven't played either of these, but it seems they're aiming for a spiritual successor to Tactics Ogre/FF Tactics of sorts? -Skyward Sword is cool to see ported. Played the original sort of recently, so I'm not gonna get it any time soon, but it's nice that people'll have access to the game again this gen. I have two worries however. One, and maybe it's my imagination, but the game doesn't look as nice on as on Wii. IIRC, the game already didn't look as good on WiiU via backwards compat. compared to on an actual Wii. I think they should've payed more attention to translating the graphics to HD. Because as it stands, the game will look better on the freaking Wii of all systems. Second, there are now so many people who are going to play the game and immediately turn off motion controls because either they don't know the game is better with them, or have heard the whiners who didn't get the motion controls in the Wii version. I get that they want the game to be playable in portable/Lite mode (and it's nice for those who physically can't use motion controls), but it's just going to lead to people being too lazy/stupid to give the motion controls a try. Add to that the people who will start out with motion controls turned on but who get impatient after half an hour and turn them off for the rest of their playthrough and you'll get a lot of people who won't play the game as god intended. -Famicom Detective Club was something I was very happy to see. I think the game looks a bit cheap, but it's still great to be able to experience a notable part of Nintendo's history, even if it's in remake form. -I was really hoping for a big ACNH update (with a lot of new furniture), but at least usable Warp-pipes is a neat touch. -Legend of Mana remake looks like it's kind of similar to how they're handling the Saga Frontier remaster. However, is it me, or does it look a bit worse than the latter? Would be nice if these would get a dual physical release. A couple of things I didn't notice previously - Nintendo are publishing the physical version of Hades which is really random. Are they, though? The boxart and the spine just say Supergiant Games. On other 3rd party games published by Nintendo it usually says Nintendo on the spine.

I missed it at the time, but Legend of Mana has HD backgrounds but with the original sprites. Saga Frontier has HD sprites and HD backgrounds presumably re-rendered from the original 3D models.

I quite liked that direct. The usual internet gnashing of teeth because there are no big triple A games but totally ignoring there was a lot of exclusives shown with the potential to be great.
As for the big triple A games, they will carry their own direct, no need to shoehorn them into 50 minutes with everything else.

Been playing Bowser's Fury and having a good time with it. It really does seem like a preview of what's to come from the Mario series. Previously we've had 3D Mario games of two different approaches - exploration based and linear, obstacle course style games. Bowser's Fury attempts to blend the two concepts through having seamless, small level based tasks contained within one giant overworld. The results seem to be somewhere inbetween - not quite as focused as say 3D World, but much more so than Odyssey which feels more like an open playground. I've seen some complaints about not having as great the moveset being more restrictive since it works within 3D Worlds ruleset, however I believe that greater restriction on Mario's abilities allows for the level design to be implemented more easily into a game of this fashion. I imagine with a greater moveset moving through the levels would be too easy and you could skip over large parts of the designed challenges the developers wanted the player to experience. One change from 3D World though is Mario isn't limited to 8-directional movement in Bowser's Fury which I feel was necessary.

So, Gamespot is looking for writers. This sentence in particular made me very depressed:
”...if you have an affinity for games/franchises like Fortnite, Call of Duty, GTA Online, or Minecraft, know your way around a gaming PC, or live and breathe anime, then make sure to hit us up.”
At least they’re not beating around the bush. This site is aiming for everything I hate in gaming.

Glad to see Diablo 2 getting a modern update. I've been wanting to play it but my computers won't play the old one I have. But I'm wondering what things Blizzard is going to do to make it a hassle to play. Their track record hasn't been good these past years since their merger with Activision. This may be the only way I can play the game today so I have little choice in the matter. Most likely the Switch version is what I'll get but wait for the reviews to see had good or bad it is.
