I'm not too keen on the HotD remake. It doesn't have the right feeling and looks overly violent. I haven't played the later ones, but they seem to have actually gotten less violent with the move to HD.

Getsu looks unusually good for a game by Konami in 2021. Did not expect this at all. Canāt help but thinking a couple of things though: Why this and not go straight for Castlevania? Itās been YEARS. Then again, why not Getsu... I wonder what āindieā means these days btw.
Ender Lilies looks very nice too.

I saw that it's only published by Konami and being developed by GuruGuru. They seem to have mostly done co-development work in the past at least for stuff that's been localized.

Getsu Fuma Den. Since it's a reboot of the famicom game it might be a mv or similar to one. Doesn't seem to be using the hub map or FP view segments.

Speaking of SNES games, I wanted to play a sidescroller brawler for the system and maybe increase my finished game tally, so I randomly opted for The Pirates of Dark Water. It's based on an animated series that I never heard about but is apparently quite good... but the same can't be said for this game. Despite being made by Sunsoft, it's a blatant Final Fight rip-off (even the HUD is exactly the same) with tedious, overly long levels featuring the same kinds of enemies over and over again that take ages to be defeated and a grating pseudo-rock score. I think it's the only brawler I ever played where I managed to get the level timer to zero multiple times. It's so plodding, boring and there's no weapons at all so I don't want to play it again. Curiously the Genesis version of the game is an average platform/adventure instead of a beat 'em up. Yeah, there was a time where I really wanted to beat this game, but I could never do it, because it was so boring and it dragged on forever. Also, people keep forgetting that Sunsoft mostly sucked in the 16-bit era. Most games published by Sunsoft of America where subcontracted to random devs, while the actual Sunsoft devs in Japan still made crappy games like Superman on the Genesis. Their Albert Odyssey RPG series looks like their highlight from that era, but outside of that, it's mostly pretty bad. Oh, and Sunsoft's only previous beat-'em-up was Tough Turf in 1989, which also sucked. The Genesis Pirates game was made by the company that made the Aero the Acro-Bat series (Iguana Entertainment), which is why it's a platformer. The SNES game was designed by a guy at Sunsoft of America and programmed in Japan.

A bit late to the indie world this time around - I'm thinking we're getting to the point where we need smaller indies separated from the ones with established names or bigger budgets. Some of the smaller games just seem to get a little lost and perhaps don't get the attention they deserve.
For my personal interest TMNT: Shredder's Revenge outshines the rest significantly and it's the only 'must buy' so far. Despite several of the games being impressive pieces of work they are not to my taste or come with a disclaimer (e.g. roguelike) that makes it a pass. Getsu Fuma Den for instance is interesting, however after Dead Cells I'm especially cautious of a similar concept.

I think Sunsoft's main problem was that they were a division of a much larger and seemingly non-consumer facing electronics company (Suncorporation) and didn't have insulation from the larger company's financial issues. I'm not sure how far back Suncorp's troubles go, but they do coincide with the tail end of the 16-bit era at a minimum. Sunsoft did manage to survive in some form even to this day, but other stuff like paying for the development of Myst but only asking for the console rights makes me think that their early 90s management wasn't the best in any case.

Sunsoft losing their mojo from the 8 to 16-bit era is one of gaming's greatest tragedies. I'll admit I played and liked a lot of those Looney Tunes games as a kid though. I remember seeing that Pirates of the Dark Water game too back in the day though I never played it. A quick glance at Youtube playthroughs shows the game takes around 90 minutes to 2 hours to complete. Completely nuts for a beat-em up, especially one that looks as boring looking as this one. The Superman game for the Genesis is especially disappointing because at a glance the game looks like it might be a spiritual sequel to the NES Batman...but it's not good. It's hard to get into Superman game where you have to approach each confrontation verrrry carefully due to all the cheap hits. There are definitely worse Superman games though. The soundtrack is actually pretty great and a top 5 Genesis OST IMO.

There's a demo for R-Type Final 2 on the eshop and since I've been on the fence as to preordering I checked it out. I was curious about performance and am happy to say it runs smoothly on Switch. The demo is just one level which I assume is the first one. It seems that this level was a bit of a harkening to the first game, playing it very safe. It plays like R-Type and has the familiar powerups and enemies but there wasn't anything particularly new or exciting in the stage design. I'm still feeling on the fence honestly. From what I played there isn't reason to worry that the game will be a bad one, but equally there's nothing to suggest it will be an exciting entry into the franchise.

Anyone know where GuruGuru operates out of? I havenāt been able to find their website. Their page on Moby Games is all I've been able to find, but they're clearly a Japanese company. Aside from that, they seem like a mystery.
