ZenithianHero - Generally these kind of overly negative minority audiences drive me away from interacting with certain communities. If people don't like what a series has to offer there becomes a point where they should consider moving on I think. For Pokemon, I'd say my partner is a fan and I would say is very reflective of the audience. Plays video games, but not an enthusiast. There are some Pokemon games he doesn't like, but he loved Let's Go, Sword & Shield, has no complaints over missing Pokemon and was blown away by the graphics. It is like you say, the best thing is to try yourself and see if you like it, rather than listening to opinions of strangers.

excelsior What is interesting for me is the different roles I take within the discussions comparing the two. With Sonic I enjoy near every era I played I know specifically what I want and what I miss about the games. Pokemon it is what I describe as watching arguments through an open window and I say my piece when I feel like it. I don't feel as intimate because I left the series for a while so many things that people do not like about the current games are something that doesn't always phase me. The DS games are often considered the series peak. I didn't play those. I have no context of what they experience and missed. To me I love classic Sonic some of my favorite games of all time but I also played the Adventure games for hundreds of hours back in the day. The Adventure games are equivalent to Pokemon fan's DS games.

So, Dragon Quest and Sonic today, huh?
Dragon Quest III HD-2D looks amazing. Makes up for the terrible looking mobile-to-Switch ports of DQ I-II-III. I guess the special-ness of it would run out if they did, but they can remake any classic RPG in that style. Hopefully it'll have an option to play with the original NES difficulty.
Dragon Quest XII though...it's going to be more adult and they're gonna mess with the battle system. Now, they already changed the battle system starting with DQ9, but this sounds (and others have pointed this out too so I'm not alone in my worries) like they're going to make it more western and/or more in line with other RPGs. DQ is pretty much the only big JRPG these days that still plays as old-school as it does, so it would be a shame if they changed too much. Also not sure how they're going to combine the colorful worlds and funny enemies with 'adult'. Maybe they just mean we're gonna see graphic depictions of puff-puff.
Oh, and DQ10 Offline. Cool, but why not just release the original in an offline version? Why a chibi-fied version?
Sonic then. I was expecting nothing and we got even less. Sonic Colors Ultimate is nice, since the original is 30fps. It's kind of weird to do a teaser trailer for a collection of old games, though. It looks like 1, 2 and CD will be the newer versions, so it's nice to get those on modern platforms, but it makes 3&K really stand out, and not in a good way. I wonder what kind of additions there will be, and if the original versions of 1, 2 and CD will be included. Sonic Mania is a blessing and a curse. It's a great game, but now everything else they announce is just a dissapointment because they've proven to be open to a new classic Sonic.

DQ has been doing better outside Japan than in the past, but I assume not as well as SE has hoped. I wonder if SE is trying to turn DQ more into FF since it's more popular internationally.

HD-2D versions of DQ 1 & 2 were also hinted at. It seems Horii is not so good at keeping things on the down low.
Also it seems new Switch hardware announcement is coming very soon. Curious to see how it's positioned.

I'm glad that they seemed to have worked things out at least and I'm curious what the 2 games will have as extras. I wonder which version of Sonic the Fighters Judgement will be using.

If S3&K was any more than just a straight port, they wouldn't have shown it off like this. DQ has been doing better outside Japan than in the past, but I assume not as well as SE has hoped. I wonder if SE is trying to turn DQ more into FF since it's more popular internationally. That's what I'm thinking. But then they'd be alienating a lot of Japanese fans, and surely they wouldn't do that to Japan's National Game? Didn't something similar happen with DQ9 where they changed their mind on it? HD-2D versions of DQ 1 & 2 were also hinted at. It seems Horii is not so good at keeping things on the down low. I thought that was more a desire from Horii than something that was actually in the works/pipeline. Or so they've been saying for the last 4 years...

On DQ 1&2 - perhaps you are right, but it kind of forces their hand if they're not in the pipeline I think. For Switch hardware, nobody reputable has been saying an announcement is coming imminently until now. Well, except in 2019 when we got the Lite and updated Switch model. I mean, you don't have to believe it, but I wouldn't have mentioned it if I didn't at least think it was legitimate. EDIT: To be specific, I'm referring to an article from Bloomberg who say the announcement could be ahead of E3, so we'll know if they were correct or not in a short timeframe. For yourself and dsparil - what kind of Final Fantasy do you envision this Dragon Quest being? Do you expect something like modern Final Fantasy? They have Bravely Default to try to fill the classic Final Fantasy void, so that's all I can think. I must admit that could be disappointing.

I think the original plan for IX was to make it an action RPG but then they only left in visible monsters from that plan. SE made statement that time around about trying to have foreign sales actually exceed domestic ones which did not come anywhere near close to happening. My gut says they're not going to give action RPG another try because otherwise they'd be pushing DQ Heroes more, but I wouldn't count it out either. excelsior , I was thinking more in terms of general style rather than gameplay. DQ has always leaned into cute, and I do think that has been somewhat of a stumbling block for the series in the west. I'm thinking something like the transition of FFTA Ivalice into FFXII Ivalice. Gameplay wise, they are experimenting with changes, but it's probably going to be minor tweaks.

Ah, a visual change would make sense. I agree it has been a hurdle for them in the west, though on the other hand it is part of the appeal in Japan. For me I really like the visuals due to the humour in them. I am open to seeing what they come up with though.

So I guess they revealed that Sonic collection a bit too early if they couldn't even get widescreen footage of S3&K. That makes me wonder just what versions of the other three will be included. I might just need to get it now. For Switch hardware, nobody reputable has been saying an announcement is coming imminently until now. Well, except in 2019 when we got the Lite and updated Switch model. I mean, you don't have to believe it, but I wouldn't have mentioned it if I didn't at least think it was legitimate. They have Bravely Default to try to fill the classic Final Fantasy void, so that's all I can think. I must admit that could be disappointing. I don't think the Switch Pro thing is necessarily NOT going to happen, but I feel that every time it pops up again (not that you can really call it 'popping up' when it's a constant rumor) people say the sources are trustworthy this time. There are, in general, more rumors with trustworthy sources that turn out BS than there are ones that turn out true. The Bloomberg thing seems substantial, but at this point I'll believe it when I see it, you know. As for DQ12. I don't have any specific imagine of the game at this point. DQ11 still looks very old-school and colorful. Most other modern JRPGs are more over-designed, for lack of a better term. I don't want Squenix to see the colorful and simpler style of DQ as outdated or childish just to cater to a more western audience. Same goes for the gameplay and more classical music. I'm not super worried or anything, but still.
