Heck Spawnwave keeps insisting there is a Metroid Prime remaster just sitting around waiting to be green lit. I mean I'd love to believe that but...

A recent DidYouKnowGaming video reminded me that the only thing that Retro has released since Tropical Freeze is… a port of Tropical Freeze five years ago. Maybe everyone there is just working on MP4 now though. Right, because that epic new logo won't materialise all by itself. Metroid Prime 4 Logo Remaster will be epic and you know it. The supposed Prime 1 Remaster was supposed to be done by Retro, but that rumor is so old it's dusty at this point.

Right, because that epic new logo won't materialise all by itself. Metroid Prime 4 Logo Remaster will be epic and you know it. The old one is an all time classic for sure, that's gonna be hard to top. Simply thinking about staring at it for hours, weeks, months even, brings sparkling tears of joy running down my cheeks. Ah, those bittersweet memories of simpler times. What would I give to be that young again... I hope they manage to honor the original's spirit, while modernising it for a whole new generation. I'm quivering with excitement!

Bit of a snoozer to start, but I certainly was more impressed by the end.
Ghost Trick: That was definitely a surprise remaster
Etrian Odyssey: I look forward to actually getting past the first level of the first game for once!
GB on NSO: Kinda weird that that the 3DS style pure grey scale isn’t an option.
GBA on NSO: Will there be a realistic year long gap between Golden Sun and Lost Age like on Wii U. That really added to the experience 🙃
Metroid Prime: Today?!
Baiten Kaitos: Maybe not a surprise because people keep saying it was going to happen, but maybe only in a "keep saying it and you look prescient if it does"
Level-5 stuff: Maybe they shouldn’t have started with DecaPolice. Fantasy Life i and Layton returning seem like maybe Level-5 is finally starting to get their act together.
Tears of the Kingdom: Guess we’re getting drips of info at a time.

Wasn't expecting Birdo to come with Wave 4.

It picked up a bit for the last ten minutesish but that was really weak.
Metroid Prime got the visual upgrade that was talked about and looked like it was worth the wait. No mention of 'Prime 4 is still coming' though is a surprise.
Pikmin 4 looked lovely. The dog is adorable.
Zelda looks to have a nice upgrade visually from BotW. Was a nice story trailer that gave a bit more to look at than we've had so far. I'm guessing a more in depth view will come in a standalone Direct later.
Nice to see the Baten Kaitos rumour was correct. I never finished the original or played the prequel.
Generally though the main impression I got from this Direct was that dev teams have moved on from Switch.
Also - please stop narrating the trailers. I don't need you to tell me that you can jump when I can see it. Let the games speak for themselves - like they did with Zelda.

Weeeeelllllll now. I guess I owe John an apology lol.
I'll definitely be looking into that when I get home tonight. I already have the trilogy emulated on my Wii U but hey, might be nice to be able to take it around.
Hell I need to get back to Dread too.

Oh no, do I have to buy that Etrian Odyssey collection now to show Atlus I want Etrian Odyssey 6? I like that there's new portraits that look more like the later games, but I don't think I'll be playing this until there's a really good reason to. Not having the touch screen is such a downgrade, that I think I'll just wait until 6 comes out to play a Switch EO. Having the ability to start out the games with classes that were originally unlockable would be a great upgrade, and something that makes sense seeing as they removed that aspect later in the series. That'd tempt me, for sure.
Anyway, kind of a light direct, mostly focused on ports and some DLC. Getting a single new character for MK8DX 6 years after launch is really funny. That track actually looks like a full-fledged new track for once, even though it's still clearly from Tour. Splatoon 3 is a bit unfair. It's cool that we're getting something else (the plaza from Splatoon 1) on top of what we knew we were getting, but why does team Order get an entire DLC for themselves? They lost for chrissake. GBA only being on the expansion pass is not going to go over well I feel. It's also funny that they have SML2 but not 1.
The highlights were no doubt Pikmin and Metroid. Pikmin just looks neat. I'm sure it'll be good, but Pikmin isn't really something that really brings very hype-y trailers for me, idk. Metroid Prime has way more effort put into it than I was expecting. The original can be a bit bad with visibility at times, though I've yet to play it with RGB out, so that might fix it. But I'm tempted.
Ghost Trick and Baten Kaitos are nice to see return, though I'll just play the former on the DS.
Yeah, this really gives the impression that the successor to the Switch is not too far away. Ah well, it was nice to get another 10 seconds of Zelda footage.

This was the first time I'd seen a Direct with a Discord I joined back in the summer, and we had a hell of a time being so excited and curious about what got shown off. My personal favourites: -Samba de Amigo: Party Central - an actual new Samba game in the year 2023! Never played the original but I love that they decided to go with a new game instead of porting an older one, hopefully this can resonate with people again. -Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective - good to see this game being made more easily available to folks, as it's a pretty rad adventure game. An online acquaintance (Oni Dino, localization lead on the new Star Ocean) is the editor for this, which is really cool to see. -Natsu-Mon! 20th Century Summer Vacation - this came up in the Japanese Direct, but this is a new game in the Boku no Natsuyasumi series by Millennium Kitchen where you wander round and have childhood adventures in rural Japan. That's automatically great, and hopefully this one can get localized like the Shin-Chan game they made a while back. (more details can be found here: www.gematsu.com/2023/02/natsu-mon-20th-century-summer-vacation-announced-for-switch)-Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection - not only is Etrian Odyssey still kicking, but these HD ports of the first three games (not the Untold remakes of 1/2, curiously) are also headed to Steam. Good on Atlus. -GB/GBA on the Switch Online - I have a 3DS so I don't need this, but I respect whatever madman sought out getting the GBC port of Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare on this thing. I love how every console on Switch Online has at least one bizarro inclusion from the get-go, and this is what the handhelds are starting with. Lot of ports or re-releases, which I know some have taken to assume that the first-party devs have moved on to something new - and perhaps they have - but I've always viewed the Switch as this inexplicable hub for ports of games from seemingly any generation or walk of life, so this is business as usual for me. I hope there's something there for everyone and that all of these'll be pretty cool.

I did not know Etrian Odyssey was coming to Steam. The mouse might be a better alternative for mapping than what they're doing on Switch. But then again, I'd want a physical copy of this, so if I ended up getting it, it would be on NSW anyway...

It's the absence of anything new that is not a port. The only newly announced today first party game was Metroid Prime. That's highly unusual, especially for the first Direct of the year where Nintendo like to give an idea of their plans.

Judging by what I've seen on Twitter, Metroid Prime also looks to be very colorblind friendly.
