It's be nice if there was an easier way to see a team's stats in game. That would certainly help with picking the right strategies. Does the manual list the actual team stats, or is that only found in game by comparing teams? According to this EBay Auction the game came with a team book listing all the stats I guess. I don't have the cash to spare to buy it and scan it though.

I've seen a couple other pictures and it's more like a poster actually. Sadly there are no particularly good scans of it. I can (and will!) get manual scans, but I haven't got the poster at all.

Played my second game of the season as the Seahawks today. Remember how earlier I noticed the AI seemed to be weak against quick passes to the side? Yeah, that's definitely the case... the AI sucks at dealing with those plays. In fact, given how well my second game went, I think it's safe to say that I've more or less got the AI routines figured out: The Raiders came close to scoring only once, in the last quarter. They managed a 30-yard pass and ended up within 20 yards or so of the end zone. But on their 4th down, given that they were already so far behind, they were forced to attempt a first down instead of settling for an easy field goal. This attempt was easily thwarted, and thus the Raiders were doomed to not earn a single point. I'm thinking this is definitely a game that is much better to play with a friend, because the AI is dumb as a brick.

I missed when you said that the first time I'm sorry. But, the funny thing is Madden still has that problem. Seriously, that problem still exists? Man, that's hilarious.
I used to play NFL Blitz back when it was a thing, and while it's a very arcade-y game and not a more realistic game the way Madden is, if memory serves that game had a similar problem. Now I'm wondering if this is a common weakness in the entire genre... maybe there's something about that kind of play that makes it difficult to write an AI that can effectively counter it? The fact that the problem apparently still exists to this very day suggests there may be more to the problem than programmer error.
Of course, the fact that EA has an exclusive NFL license and thus has a monopoly on the genre also means that maybe they're just lazy as hell because they know they don't really have to try any more.

Yeah, I think it may be a genre thing. AI for defense seems to point itself at the ball, as long as you hit this window of where the line can't react quick enough it works. I really liked Blitz. I heard the new one had issues, and I'm weird, but being able to use the teams is actually kind of deal for me. Probably because if I wanted to play football that wasn't the actual teams I'd go out and round up a couple of people and toss the ball, running around like a jackass. That and the escapism of video games allows me to be this world class team and the immersion of it all. Or I am a Miami Dolphins fan and making them win the Super Bowl just feels cathartic.

I just had a really close-call game with the Oilers. They even scored first, and got a 98-yard interception (ugh), which I believe ended in a touchdown. Thankfully between a successful onside kick (well, their receiver fumbled the ball right when I got there, allowing me to recover it) and a couple interceptions of my own, I was able to eke out a victory against them, hard-fought though it was.
Naturally, Foster continues to completely dominate the rushing stats.

I knew a person who somehow instinctively knew how to immediately break any AI, even in a game he never played before. He somehow knew, RIGHT AWAY, when Blitz 99 (arcade) was brand new, and having never played any football game before, (I can't remember specifically the name of the play right now) even playing as Chicago (who was terrible in Blitz 99), always picking the play lining up all 3 receivers/RBs on the same side of the field, doing the pitch to the side, and then hurling it down the field. It worked every damned time and it had immunity from even the game's catch-up AI. Everyone else there at the time tried to do the same thing, with varying degrees of success. Nobody had nearly the level of execution that he did.

So, 17 weeks later and the NFL season has ended. With their undefeated season, the Steelers are in the quarterfinals easily, but the rest of the teams remaining are gonna be gunning for them. Suck it, 2007 Pats -- I didn't need no damn candid camera bullshit. The funniest match I've had was against the Dolphins, with Dan "Sticky-fingers" Marino getting sacked time and again. Games taking too long? There's a cheat for one-minute games (15-second quarters), but I didn't yet mention it. ACCBB at the main menu. Can be used when selecting season/playoff games unlike the jaguar/panther thing. Next of all: End-of-season stats! Includes any leader stats where one of the Steelers (PIT) players placed on the list.

Played two more games today, myself. The first game was against... I don't even remember. They were a weak team, and utterly unremarkable in every way. My next game was far more noteworthy, against the Steelers. They must have been a good team in '94, because they were actually dangerous! Their defense was on the ball, and more successful at keeping my running plays and side passes under control than any other team I have faced so far. Likewise, their offense was startlingly good at running the ball themselves, and I had to work hard on defense for once. I managed to win by about ten points in the end, but it was close. Definitely the most interesting match I've had in the game so far... hopefully I'll face at least a few more teams like that before the season is done.

I'd say you can probably expect the Chargers's defense to give you a good challenge too. They wild-carded into the playoffs and were the last team I faced in the season, and only fought harder in that playoff game. Nothing I couldn't handle but it was cut really close compared to the other games I've played (and I simulated against the really easy teams, which is one of the reasons I finished so quickly).
I'm considering streaming the super bowl later this week maybe (next Sunday?), if people are interested. I'm just not sure whether the internet here can handle it so I might do another simple test stream just to make sure.
