www.hardcoregaming101.net/mickeymania/mickeymania.htmHow many Mickey series were there during the 16-bit era? There was the Sega "Illusion" series on the SMS/GG/Gen and Capcom's Magical Quest on the SNES. This one is totally separate from those, instead developed by British team Traveller's Tales. It takes six classic Mickey Mouse cartoons and turns them into side-scrolling levels. Most of the screens from this were taken from the EU-only PlayStation release, Mickey's Wild Adventure. The article mentions it's on the North American PSN now, but I can't seem to find it at the moment?

This was a beautifully animated game, but was incredibly shallow IMO. I remember buying it because of glowing reviews in all the magazines (mistake number one), beating it in the first try, and then returning it for Earthworm Jim.

Is there any chance we could get an article going on the Magical Quest games, or would that require a full writeup on Mickey Mouse like we had for Donald?
Great article, by the way. Sadly, it seems like it's one of those Disney games where the animation actively hinders the gameplay, especially when it comes to stuff like hit detection.

I've been thinking of doing the Sega Mickey games, so one that focused on the Capcom developed ones would be just fine. Maybe a Sega/Virgin and Capcom showdown for Aladdin, too?

I was never able to like this game. It has the same problem most European platformers had on that era: Bad collision detection, crazy/overly-animated jumping, touchy controls, among other.

This was one of my favorites on SNES when growing up. And despite it being inferior to the Megadrive version I never understood all the hate it gets, like its supposed to be somekind of failed port.
Also, one of my favorite childhood gaming memories was finding the secret on the elevator in level 2. The joys of discovering.

I almost bought this for SNES, but I heard that was a rubbish port... I can vouch it has never come out for American PSN. I watch it pretty closely.

The Game Boy series was technically contemporary, i.e. the whole Crazy Castle/Kid Clown/Garfield/Ghostbusters mess that only got sorted out with the fifth game.

Man those blasted skeletons. I remember having to duck the bone explosion in the elevator section as some kind of zen moment.
Oh and can we just add one sentence explaining that you collect marbles to use as projectiles? The article kind of starts mentioning them out of left-field.

I have had the PS 1 version of this game since I was like 9.
And I could only ever finish it on an emulator with save states because of that stupid top scrolling tower stage. Pete's Tower isn't exactly a whole lot of fun either, but this level you face enemies which normaly take three hits, but now just one. It messes with your brain and causes you to slip up and fall into the lava.
And then we have the vine section right after that.
The worst part is that if you die and have to restart the Prince and the Pauper world, there is not enough ammo in the levels for you to kill all the enemies thus having to try and avoid them and their arrows, which ends up in you dying anyway. Heck, dying once in the first half of this world has the exact same consequences :/

Loved this game on SNES back in the day and didn't remember any funky collision detection problems or anything for the longest time. Just had a bunch of fun with it and remembered lots of critical praise.
Tried to go back to it a few years ago and I really wish I had left those god damned rose tinted glasses on. It's the epitome of eurotrash platformers. I'm going to have to side with ReyVGM, though I've never played any other iteration of the game so maybe it's not as unplayable on other platforms.
still, I have super good memories of it.

I remember renting this on Xmas Eve in 1994 to keep me held over until the next day. I remember it getting tons of hype. I logged in for the first time in years just to say this.

I remember renting it too based off the review hype and remember...kinda liking it? More than Fantasia anyway, which I also rented based off a high review in VG&CE, but ended up being garbage. I'd played the Sega CD Mickey Mania, I'd assumed the scaling levels were particularly for that port, but I guess they looked the same in the cart version. Anyway, it's probably better that I don't go back based on these. I've been playing the SMS Illusion games since I missed them before, and am finding them a decent alternative to the Genesis games.

I rented it back in the day because it looked cool and got good reviews, but didn't like it too much for reason's I can't quite put my finger on. It felt... sloppy, somehow, like most western-developed platformers, but I don't think that was the only thing... It also was one of the few SNES games with noticeable load times I ever saw.
