Ugh, I'm really starting to lose patience with the game. After rescuing Vic, I'm still a meagre level 3 with a borrowed leather Jacket and the starting spear. I'm nearly useless in any combat scenario and I feel like I'm hitting a brick wall after leaving the Den. You gotta do some more questing. Or random killings, depending on your playstyle. Alternatively you can just keep avoiding combat situations until you're better equipped. You could also try some grinding in the Klamath area, where there's easy things to kill like one or two cannibals or scorpions. That might take some time though.

My problem is that I'll beat the shit out of some deathclaws or about 20 scorpions then get murdered by highwaymen ;p. Or, I got into a situation yesterday where I ran across a farm defending against scorpions; I tried to help but then those hillbillies attacked me instead. I killed them in self defense, but then Sulik got butthurt and left the party because I killed some little shit that was trying to kill me. Waah. Here's a couple questions from me: 1) Any recommendations for Vic? I've given him guns and he's fucking awful; I've gotten to the point where I tell him to go sit in a corner and beat off while me and Sulik take care of things because otherwise he's burning through ammo I could be using. 2) Where can you find dynamite/plastic explosives for sale? I had to use the second "found" stack to blow the door to the Highwayman in Klamath, although I regret it. I want to do the "thief trick" on Metzger - steal from him, put a time bomb in his inventory, get out and reap the results. Speaking of which... Protip: Hate those little shit kids that steal from you in the Den? If you put an armed bomb in their inventory by using the steal skill, it doesn't count against your karma/mark you as a child killer. Zerker, it sounds like we're maybe around the same stage of the game - I haven't done much grinding but I've been doing all the quests I can. If you haven't already do the rat god quest in Klamath. Did you get the starting spear sharpened? If not, if you go back to Arroyo the guy at the bridge will do it for you if you bring him flint from your aunt, it helps. If you haven't been doing targeted attacks you should start now - I just finally found out how to do them Saturday, sadly - it has made battle go a HELL of a lot easier for me with the extra criticals and the status effects on enemies. I've got only 20 luck but was able to clean house in the Den on craps, which helped me get money for leather armor and other stuff. As for the Den, I'm guessing you paid Metzger off - if you haven't done so already save in his room and steal his shotgun. Nice thing is that when you go back to fight him (if you want) then he'll be defenseless. I did the toxic cave but was radiated afterward; I'm trying to kill some golden geckos before I use the radaway or try to find a doctor (not sure where those are, or how much it costs). I'm at level 6 now and I went with Educated - I'm wondering if I should've gotten More Criticals instead, but extra points sounds nice to me.

I went back to Arroyo, but my Aunt doesn't even open up a dialog tree, and the guy by the bridge doesn't offer. Maybe my perception is too low to recognize the need? Right now, I'm doing the main Modoc quest, which is essentially non-combat. However, I am completely unable to find Karl in order to finish it without getting everyone killed. Any advice? The slag leader said he went Northwest, but I wandered all around the NW and couldn't find him. Also, I ran into the Rat God, but nobody gave me a quest to kill it. Maybe I'll go back and ask around again. I ran from the battle at the time, so the possibility is still open. I seem to remember Fallout 1 being way easier to get going. Why couldn't we have picked that one?

Why couldn't we have picked that one? Good news for you, I think I found Karl before getting to that point so this helps us both. He's in Momma's Diner in the east part of the Den, at the back. I asked him about his story and he told me about ghosts and a farm, so I'm guessing this might be the same guy? As for the spear thing I just talked to the guy; I was able to get it with a 5 perception IIRC on an earlier run. I got the flint from my aunt by stealing from her, but apparently if your speech is high enough you can convince her. As for rat god I didn't really get a quest per se, but several people mentioned the rats - so if you killed it and the other rats you should be ok.

Vic ain't much of a help in combat. He's just a old mechanic after all. Still, I remember him being at his best when given a hunting rifle or shotgun. - You need to talk to the guy guarding the bridge in order to start the quest to sharpen the spear, then you can negotiate with your aunt in order to get the stone or outright steal it. And yeah, you gotta have some perception in order to see that his spear looks different compared to yours. If its low for you, you can buff it a bit with a Jet or two, but be careful with not getting addicted, it will trash your stats.
- As mentioned earlier, Karl is hiding in Den at the Mama's restaurant. He's the bum in green talking about ghosts.
EDIT: What he said Oh, and you can get the rat quest by talking to the guy who's guarding the locked door to the rat infested area.

You can buy explosives off of merchants in Modoc and Vault City, which is where I bought the dynamite I put in Metzger's pants. Not sure about Redding yet.

The Chosen: What's sad is that I had like six hunting rifles and an assload of Jet that I took off of slavers I murdered, but then another group of em killed me.BTW I'm sad because I killed the golden geckos to make sure the trapper made it out of the cave alive, but I could've made bank on their hides if I had the perk he gave me afterward. :/ Oh well. Another glitch is that I found a yellow card key on a body next to the vertibird in Klamath, but reloaded b/c of how much damage I took from the robot. I went there later and the bodies were gone...hope I didn't need that for anything...

There are plenty more geckos to fight later in the game, trust me. Also I seriously recommend saving after every major action. A lot of the later game consists of you talking to people, and if you blow it, you'll screw yourself out of good quests and gear. Best to treat this as a Sierra adventure game once you get to the talky bits.

I've screwed up a couple of times apparently - is it true you can get metal armor off of Tyler's goons during the shoot-out at the church? I swear someone said that. I looted them afterward and got some guns and ammo, but no armor.

I have no idea if you can get metal armor from that fight, because I sure didn't. Merchants in Modoc and Vault City sell metal armor though.

If you really want to jumpstart your game, go to San Francisco. There are two shopkeepers there who will carry any money you pay them in their pockets. For the picking, dig? They sell the old FO1 style Power Armor there for around 30k. Once you have that much money, you can buy the armor and steal the cash back, blow it on Gauss Rifles and Pancor Jackhammers for your NPCs, steal THAT money back, etc. Getting the cash for this gear is pretty easy, too. By wandering the wastes around SF you'll often run into rivals factions fighting each other. If you do nothing and just wait for one side to win, you can loot the corpses with impunity. Just make sure that if the winning side is a band of merchants you put your guns away or they'll get hostile. I made tons of money at really low levels by selling back all the gear I found this way. Long story short: I managed to kill Darian in Vault 15 and retrieve the GECK right after getting Vic and Cassidy.

BTW zerker please disregard about the sharpened spear, you've probably got about fifteen by this point from random encounters with bandits. Also it looks like hunting rifles are a good fit for Vic, he's been pulling his weight for once.
I just got through Modoc and covered them with poop as their penance for almost wiping out a peaceful race of morlock-types. Assholes. I'm torn about whether to head to Gecko or Vault City first, I'm leaning toward Gecko for some reason.

Surprisingly enough, I've barely gotten into any random encounters. The only real "combat" encounter I got into (that I survived) was about 4 radscorpians and 4 spore plants. Beyond that, I've run into an encounter with 8 "robbers" who proceed to shoot me to death. I can't even get to the flee square before Vic bites it. I've also run into non-combat encounters, like nomads or brahmin herds, and one encounter with a bunch of wimpy hungry people.

I've lucked out and ended up in the middle of some fights; as long as Vic or Sulik don't spaz out and attack, it's usually easy pickings. I'm pretty happy with my build from a combat standpoint because I'm usually able to shoot people in the eyes or head for critical damage or to blind them. I got a lot of free weapons and drugs this way (although honestly I've been making more money from playing craps).

Speaking of Gambling, If you're feeling lucky (probably helps that you have high luck and high gambling skill), find a slot machine, hold 5 on numpad and watch the money come/go, provided that they haven't fixed it in any of the fan patches. You can even empty slot machines this way.
