Faria might count, but... it's apparently a guy's mind in a girl's body?

Yeah, though the player character being female at the beginning of the game wasn't entirely clear in NA if I recall. At least I didn't know until the king said he couldn't uphold the reward of the princess's hand in marriage due to me being a girl. The manual or back of the box might have said something, but I had neither. Then came the twist near the end which made my restarting the game to change my name after rescuing the princess pointless.

How about Baseball Stars? It has a whole team of women, plus there is a woman option in the create-a-player menu.

Yeah, it was not made clear at all in the US version; it was weird seeing the cover of the Famicom version and lo and behold...

I tried to make myself play Faria. The whole concept just seemes completely cracked out (The weird looking town guards, the "It looks like the princess, but it's not!" with the forest insect thing, etc.) enough to be interesting... ...but ugh, those dungeon layouts, no thank you. I'm no good at drawing maps.

You could also include Aphrodite from The Maze of Galious (MSX 1987).

Not sure if either one of these will count, but I'm going to mention them anyways:
- Anne from Jagur: Golden Triangle (MSX, 1987). While the game will always be started with Jeff, once you have gathered all the four members to your group in the first town, she's one of the characters that you can play as thereafter (there's only one level in the game where you're forced to play as Jeff alone).
- Arle Nadja from the Madou Monogatari series. While most of the Madou Monogatari games were released in the 90s, there was a prototype of Madou Monogatari Episode II: Carbuncle released in 1989 for the MSX2, in Disc Station Special 5: Christmas Edition issue.

You could also include Aphrodite from The Maze of Galious (MSX 1987). She'd technically qualify, but she's just a pink palette swap of Popolon IIRC, which is hilariously lazy, so I don't think it counts enough to feature her.

Would Christine from Arkista's Ring count? The game was physically released in 1990, but the copyright and trademark on the title screen is 1989.

That's all very interesting, good job!
Some notes:
Page 1: "infamout" > infamous "as a women" > woman "she takes onto her old wooden broom" > gets onto? "percentages" > is plural necessary? "she gets it" > hit "incontrollable" > uncontrollable "a crush for a diver" > a crush on? "Japanese computer game" > games
Page 2: "swuitsuit" > swimsuit "some of the more famous Japanese video game leading lady's Namco's Wonder Momo" > probably needs rephrasing "it's damsel-in-distress" > its
Page 3: In the Major Locke bit, the male hero is called Arcos ans Arkos "fever" > fewer "families old fashioned farm" > family's old-fashioned farm "the disappearance of Chaney's Hill" > the disappearances? "based based" > based "where her go-getter attitude was replaced with a stereotypical Disney princess personality, and her primary goal is to find a man" > I feel like the auxiliairies (in red) should both be either present or past tense "mata" > Mata The link to the Final Fantasy II article leads to a 404 error "the most remarkable aspect about her" > didn't establish who "her" is prior to that "is a rather unremarkable" > should be "is rather unremarkable", since the noun completing this adjective (unremarkable) would be plural The two covers of the White Lion Densetsu bit are just one image, but the clickable larger version shows only one "Roberta Williams revisted in the murder mystery theme" > revisited the? "find his lost beau" > her "confident women" > woman "Ellinoir" > Ellinor

Or...you could look at it like Popolon is a blue palette swap of Aphrodite. It's all in the mind, maaaan!
