So I wipped out the year old demo of Curse of darkness set my XBOX to 4:3 so it displays right and it's pretty good.
I've played a good chunk of the Castlevania games maybe 5 or 6 of them I never played.
I'm pretty sure most people will say SOTN (I my self say Harmony) is the best but How about the other ones?
AND is a Castlevania without a Belmont really a Castlevania at all?

The only good castlevania is hopefully a castlevania without a belmont in a leather skirt with no pants on.

I like the original and 3 the best. Symphony is a good game, but it's braindead easy.

Of the Castlevania games I've played...
The original is a classic and though it has aged well there were so many side scrollers on the NES it sort of gets lost in the flow.
I really like Castlevania 2, with its adventure/RPG aspects and fantastic soundtrack.
Castlevania 3 is a lot like the first game but better in every way... stands up as one of the best side-scrollers ever.
Super Castlevania IV is really good. It's a pretty standard side-scroller but it has great bosses and set pieces, and has a great soundtrack.
Symphony of the Night is absolutely amazing the first time through as the game seems so huge and detailed, and it seems like you're constantly discovering things. However, you're so busy discovering things that you don't really notice how dull the level design is and how ridiculously easy the game is. So in hindsight it's not so great a game.
The GBA/DS Castlevania games are like SOTN minus the massiveness of the castle and the detailed animation and sprites, but with varying levels of difficulty. For example, Circle of the Moon is way harder than SOTN (but still not very hard), but HoD and AoS are pretty easy (and short). The DS game is definitely the best of this bunch, though the DS features are tacked on and awful (the map is useful though).
The PS2 Castlevania games are really awful. You run around in gray or brown hallways and massacre poorly modeled enemies with a combat system that is just barely more complicated than the one in Dynasty Warriors.

I liked what I played of Curse of darkness.
I'm stuck in harmony the top part of the castle is blocked off and I'm endlessly searching to find exactly what I need to unlock it. I do not like Aria of Sorrow AT ALL the weapon they give you has NO range at all. I've yet to play Circle of the moon but hope too soon. Have yet to touch the DS games.
I have played Dracula X but only on the SNES Castlevania IV is too easy.
1 is classic Haunted Castle is good (the arcade game) 2 is a good foreshadow of what's to come. 3 is awesome but gets insane near the end on top of that there are 2 versions with the Famicom version being the better of the 2.
SOTN, PC Engine Dracula X, Chronicles, 64, the 2 orignal Gameboy games, and the first PS2 game I haven't played.

My Favorites include;
Dracula X (Duo) Castlevania III Symphony of the Night Aria of Sorrow Castlevania Bloodlines
Castlevania IV is bottom barrel. I won't go into why, you can use the search function for that tangent.
Castlevania without a Belmont isn't a huge problem for me. As long as it's fun I don't give a crap

I own almost all of the US Castlevanias and love most of them. My favorites are many of the ones already mentioned and I agree with the fact that the first PS2 one sucked. I think Lament of Innocence may even be worse than the original N64 one. At least that one had original environments and didn't all look exactly the same throughout. I have not played Curse of Darkness, though I plan to get the XB version sometime down the road. I have to say that the second N64 game, Legacy of Darkness, is actually a very good game for the era and improves upon the first in just about every way in terms of control and playability. People should really give that one more of a chance. Though SotN is awesome and there is no denying the fact, I still like Dawn of Sorrow for the DS the best for the extra modes, environments, and soul system. And I can't wait to go pick up my copy of the new one!

Castlevania IV is bottom barrel. I won't go into why, you can use the search function for that tangent. Seeing how widely well-regarded Castlevania IV is, it'll be somewhat difficult to find out about what makes it a "bottom-barrel" game with just a search engine. Symphony of the Night does get easy toward the end, especially with the crissaegrim, but it's still a fantastic game. I also agree about Dawn of Sorrow's touch-screen functions being tacked-on, except for one puzzle that required you to break a series of ice blocks trapping an explosive spark, chasing the spark to the top to blow up a barrier. That was well-done. Nonetheless, I was glad to hear that the touch-screen functions wouldn't be making a return in Portrait of Ruin.

Castlevania 64 is my favorite castlevania game, quite possible one of the most under rated games. No one played it because of the camera, sad. That game is a awesome N64 game

Hey whoah whoah whoah! Lament of innocence and CoD are both quality action titles! They aren't DMC3 but they are still pretty good!

Listen... all I can say is that I like The Castlevania Adventure. ;D
... but if you want me to say more, I'm just a blind CV fanboy. Sure, certain games in the series have faults... 'cept for CV3. But I love 'em all, dammit.

But I love 'em all, dammit. Go on.......... Apparently Castlavania is in the Cannon of Bram Stokers Dracula. SO Bella Legose was in a Castlevania movie (and cannonically speaking any game with Dracula is a Castlavania game) Broadens our chances to say game X sucked doesn't it.

Then we could say that Vampire Hunter D was one of the worst Castlevania games ever considering he was Dracula's son and therefore Alucard's brother. Hmmm....does that make Van Helsing his brother's father's cousin's former roommate?
