So I was thinking about Soul Blazer the other day and I always, always, always thought the music was really bizarre for the game. It doesn't fit the swords and sorcery setting at all. I was trying to find a little information on the OST when I discovered that there is a vocal arrangement of Lisa's song. As if the melody of the song wasn't out of place enough, it turns out the lyrics refer to modern things like cars, neon lights and highways. I'm starting to be convinced that Yukihide Takekawa was just trying to make an album of his own songs and wound up putting them in a video game when he realized the deadline was coming up and he hadn't done anything yet. It would certainly explain some of the weird dungeon themes.
Anyone else encounter games where the music jars you out of the experience?

Hot Shots Golf 2. The re-skinned cartoon characters and voice acting don't really mesh with the peaceful anime music. (No wonder the option defaults to "off.")
I like the characters a lot better, and not ironically either - just PLEASE, change the music with it!

System Shock 2. I really don't think that an atmospheric sci-fi game really has any need for a loud techno soundtrack. I turn it off every single time.

The awesome 90's rave soundtrack in Formula Karts always felt odd to me. Mostly because such an awesome soundtrack was in a Kart sim. It just does not compute. Here, take this awesome rave tune that plays, fittingly, on the Holland course: www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9PlEWk4iK4My PAL copy of this was was mostly used as a music CD, as the game wasn't too crash hot

I thought the jazzy soundtrack of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was weird. I mean, does this sound like a fight is happening?

Adventures of Batman & Robin for the Genesis. Dark brooding superhero game with an awesomely amazing (yet utterly inappropriate) techno/eurobeat soundtrack.

System Shock 2's soundtrack is so weird. The in-game ambient music and short bits that play during certain dramatic moments are perfect for the game, and some of the action tracks are quite good, but the weird acid techno theme the first encounter with the hybrids opens up with is bizarre. The 90s were a time. It was like they made a solid soundscape for the game and then threw in some unused tracks from a totally different project. Though we see a similar disparity in both Thief games regarding the in-game sound design and the cutscene/setpiece music (same composer). So it may be the tracks were actually composed before the game itself was finished, with the expectation of more cutscenes or other more action oriented environments like in System Shock 1. I actually really like how funky Soul Blazer and other early Enix SNES music can get. It's very out of place for such high stakes, spiritual games. The coolest thing is in the final area of Soul Blazer, if you don't immediately attack the skeletons you can note how their heads bop and that they march around in formation in time with the music. It's true though, most of the game's soundtrack sounds more like it's from a Fat Boys album than from an SNES fantasy game. The concept of a fantasy setting existing after an apocalypse that happened in a time where we had high technology is pretty common. Illusion of Gaia especially plays on this, and again makes me think of the music was being designed with this in mind. Both late nineties PC games and early 90s SNES games were kind of peak "churn this stuff out ASAP," so it would make sense of there was a bit of communication breakdown and there wasn't time for someone to compose a completely new soundtrack even if the style of the game evolved during development.

To be fair, there's quite a bit of Soul Blazer's OST that fits the game (shrine theme, anyone?) but it has about 5 or 6 tracks that are very out of place.

Valkyrie Profile has a progressive rock soundtrack in a pseudo-medieval setting.
Of course, it is an awesome soundtrack that works in the context of the game and usually suits the mood, but it doesn't fit the Norse mythology theme too well.

Vasteel's CD soundtrack. High Tech, intergalactic, civil war, space opera to the sound of laid back, funky jazz beats and cool saxophone improv.... ummm okay.

Mario golf World Tour on the 3DS is a great, great game. The only thing that always surprises me with this game is its music arrangements. Up-tempo tracks with a whole big band orchestration and mad drums parts, it doesn't match at all my idea of golf. Dissonance ensues, even though the tracks are clearly well done and finely composed. Strange...
Sounds like sped-up, intense awards show music to me.

As I wrote in my Skeleton Krew article, the music of the Amiga version (by Martin Iveson) is cool but it feels very inappropriate for a game where you have to destroy anything and everything. The Genesis music however is both cool and extremely fitting.
I just discovered right now that the music of the shitty Amiga platformer Wonder Dog was made by Martin Iveson as well! What's with these "porn groove" sounds? Did this man ever play or SEE the games he provided the soundtrack for?

Some of the time the composer/sound designer didn't see what they were making the music for. And yes, it does sound like bad porno music.
