Is it any good story-wise? Absolutely! As I said, they can be a little slow early on, but there's a ton of lore and character development which is gradually revealed to the player as they play onward, and it builds up eventually into something truly special and amazing. They're possibly my favorite JRPGs I've ever played. Oh, I think I'll give it a try then. If I like it, I'll thank you personally later  |

Honestly I'm not sure "more voice acting" is much of a selling point, if the sample in that trailer is telling of how it turned out in this game. Nice to be able to play it on PC though, is there an option to turn voices off independendly of the rest of the sound?

Yes, as far as I'm aware, you can turn off the voices. But I'm surprised to hear you're not a fan, as I legitimately think we got some of the best voice-acting we've ever had in Trails of Cold Steel. Sean Chiplock as Rean is superb (I like his take on the character better than the Japanese VA's, even), and most of the rest of the cast is equally excellent. To each their own, I suppose. -Tom |

Well, maybe that scene is just a real miss-step and no indication of the product as a whole. Or one needs to be nostalgic for shitty early 90s anime dubs to appreciate this games' dub, who knows ;P
Anyways, good to hear there's an option to turn the noise off :3

See, I don't think you remember what '90s dubs actually sounded like, if that's your impression of this! The dialogue in Cold Steel is, IMHO, really natural-sounding. As much as is humanly possible with a cast that consists largely of subverted anime tropes, anyway. Brittany, who supervised the recording process, went to great pains to get the most natural reads possible out of the actors, and I think she was extraordinarily successful. Towa does have one of the more high-pitched voices in the series (which one might consider either a pro or a con, depending on their tastes), but generally, Trails of Cold Steel I and II's English dubs are very high-quality. I can't think of too many that I've liked more than that, outside of maybe the Metal Gear English dubs. Getting to hear more Rean is especially a cool thing, I think.

Anime/video game dubs in general have come a long way since the 90s. There are very few outright bad ones anymore. Even the rushed Funimation ones are better than 90% of most 90s dubs. Now, you're free to dislike the idea of dubs in general, but to talk about the quality of game/anime dubs as if they can never improve and haven't in decades would be a negatively biased opinion. There are many people who still think Cowboy Bebop is still the only good dub ever made--it was very good in its era, but the overall quality of dubbing has improved to the point that today, Cowboy Bebop would be considered just another solid dub.

My gold standard dub is R.O.D. the TV, which was not only exceptional, it was exceptional with child actors playing child roles and British actors playing British roles. It was the first time I became aware of the name Taliesin Jaffe (who directed it), and it basically made me a huge fan of Taliesin not just as an actor, but as a director. Which is why the first time I was able to work with him as a director, on Akiba's Trip, it was kind of a special moment -- and to this day, the three weeks I spent in the studio working alongside Taliesin Jaffe to record voices for Akiba's Trip remains one of my fondest memories from my entire seven years at XSEED. That project was just an absolute blast from start to finish, and Taliesin really is a joy to work with -- and we've worked with him numerous times since then as well, with great results every single time. So I can say first-hand that the people who work on anime and video game dubs these days are, for the most part, very passionate about what they do, and very good at doing it. Quality standards really have gone up tremendously since the '90s. -Tom |

I still need to finish the first game. I very rarely do this but I still have II sealed on Vita as I was waiting until I finished the first Cold Steel. I didn't care much for TiTs but liked Cold Steel more just got distracted a bunch since.
