I think Neon was pretty popular but kinda disliked by old fanboys. From what I read, people who think beat 'em ups are awesome because they are tough as nails and manly think it's "stupid shit with gay colors" (pretty much the demography who would use that phrase I guess). People who are a bit younger and can see & enjoy the campiness of the genre seem to like Neon. I personally think it didn't feel like Double Dragon at all but was a fun game.
The disowned parts of the series would be 5 (now literally, given how part 4 was released just now) and yeah, Wanderer. I guess the Battletoads game is also not really considered a DD game?
(Also, since I'd asked before and this is related-ish - I've since picked up & played River City Ransom Underground and it's super fun; definitely recommended for multiplayer.)

I don't know how you can say Neon wasn't "Double Dragon" enough when you're dealing with a series that drastically changes with about every installment, but I think I've gone into this argument before.
I really hope that that DD4 being kind of awful hasn't killed any hope for more DD games, to get back on subject.

I was talking about the gameplay feeling more like a Konami brawler than a methodological Technos games, not the art direction.
Agreed on hopes for a future DD game. We'd need DD4's equivalent to what Sonic Mania was for Sonic 4.

People like Beat 'em ups super hard? Weird, not me. I play them for stress relief, so I'm happier when they're easy and I just crush a mass of people. Mind you, in general I prefer games easier, as I pay to play, I don't really give two shits about being challenged. As for Neon...I can kind of understand it rubbing you the wrong way if you don't like or just aren't familiar with 1980s culture, as it dopes lay it on thick. Always sad there was never a sequel to it tho
