Never played Contra: Hard Corps, but I enjoyed Contra III. Best game in the series IMO. Contra: Hard Corps is my personal favorite, plus it's one of those games, which gets loops or New Game+s just right(multiple characters and routes).

Contra 3 is excellent, the second NES game (Super C/Probotecor 2) and the first Gameboy Contra Contra (Operation C/Probotector) are great, too.
Hard Corps (ideally the Japanese version) is probably even better than all of those combined: It's filled with creative and crazy ideas and it plays brilliantly.
Other titles I like: Gunstar Heroes, Gunstar Super Heroes, Alien Soldier, Rendering Ranger R2 and the Ikari no Yōsai games - especially he second and third (Operation Logic Bomb) installments.

Has Contra: Hard Corps really never been ported? I was hoping to play it over the weekend but my Genesis isn't hooked up and the cart is spendy.

I haven't seen it anywhere else yet, so most likely not, but it runs reasonably well on any decent Sega Genesis/MD emulators(like Gens or Kega Fusion), if you want to go through that. It's a bit surprising really.

I pretty much like Contra Rebirth. Manabu Namiki used Yamaha YM2151 and Konami K007232 to make it sound like Super Contra arcade in STEREO. I like the first Contra arcade as well, because Konami rereleases it more than America's favorite NES version. Has Contra: Hard Corps really never been ported? I was hoping to play it over the weekend but my Genesis isn't hooked up and the cart is spendy. Some of its levels were used in Contra Advance: The Alien Wars EX.

Thanks, guys. It's really frustrating when I can't give devs money for their old games that are too expensive to just buy on the secondary market. <_<

I have found I enjoy the gameboy games more than the Snes one. Possibly because the presentation in the latter (interesting as it is) get's in the way of the flow.

Think of it like, blueberries and cranberries cake, that's been kept in the fridge for so long -no one remembers the taste of it

Wow, Hard Corps is amazing. I just found a secret boss rush and traveled in time to marry a monkey.

Sorry for the double post. But I played through Contra III today for the first time. It was really fun -- and super brutal. But man, what were those second and fifth levels? The boss of level five was especially...unfun and terrible. The bike level, the other gimmick level, was fun and had a really cool boss though. Had to lean hard on save states between bosses in the last level though, since I was playing on hard. :/ That boss rush was brutal, and game overing brings you to the start of it. The final skeleton guy, the brain, and the hard mode exclusive boss are all fairly trivial once you learn them though.
Contra III feels like Contra, and it's great. But since I've been playing Alien Soldier, Gunstar Heroes, and Hard Corps lately, I just don't think Contra III is on the same level. I feel like it's on the cusp of being great, but kinda reminds me of Castlevania IV in that it seems a bit too preoccupied with showing off the still-newish hardware and not always using it to the game's benefit. I think all these games are only about 1-3 years apart, but the gulf between them feels larger.

On Console, I'd go with Contra Hard Corps.
On PC, I'd say Halloween Harry/Alien Carnage (With Duke Nukem 2 a close 2nd)

It's like the opposite of Contra NES's behind-the-back stages, where I usually lose more lives than the average stage.

I'm not very good at run n guns unless its Gunstar Heroes or Some of the Metal Slugs. Metal Slug is my favorite series since I can just sort of get this rythmn going and see great success.
Contra on the other hand I've tried to get into several times but something just puts me off about it. I really didn't like the weapon switching in Shattered Solider and 3 just seemed mean spirited half the time (I swear the last boss has like 5 unavoidable moves. I know I'm wrong but its like they need bullet hell precision which im not fond of) with awful, awful gimmicks with the mode 7 stuff. Hated those gimmick stages in the original too.
However I am interested in giving Hard Corps a try one day. Maybe.

It's leagues better than 3 and has such a great vibe. It feels a lot more like Gunstar Heroes than Contra 3.
