Definitely Hard Corps: Uprising. High class in every way, great difficulty progression, ton of level variety.

Hey, I just remembered, whatever happened to that guy here who was absolutely obsessed with Metal Slug? If you're talking about me, I'm still around, just not frequenting this forum due to me dealing with not just my personal projects but also chores, jobs, and workout. And I don't need to stress a certain franchise that I love is my favorite run n gun one, though the first game is my favorite out of that franchise.
Come to think of it, I should branch out to the other games in the run n gun genre though I'm not really looking forward to Cuphead, I mean I'm really not a fan of the old 1930's cartoon aesthetic.

Hello there, yes I was talking about you. I think if you like Metal Slug you should definitely give Cuphead a try, while the artstyle may not be personally your thing, I can't see how anyone couldn't still be impressed by how well the game pulls it off.

I'm not unimpressed by the aesthetic, it does its job perfectly, yet it reminds me of why I dislike it due to the weird-butt nature of them in general (though cartoons made after the 30's and even today are capable of having weird imagery mind you) and I'll think I'll pass for now; besides I was thinking of maybe stuff like the Gunstar Heroes games, especially the one for the GBA that I remember being featured on a Nintendo Power magazine when I was young.

I'm sorry to be blunt, but Cuphead is the closest thing you're going to get to a new Metal Slug and you know that saying about beggar's can't be choosers.
The game is inexpensive and is literally one of the best games I've played in years, there's no reason not to give it a try dude, come on.

I don't think Cuphead is all that similar to Metal Slug FWIW, but I still think people who enjoy Metal Slug, or really any kind of run 'n gunner would enjoy Cuphead. I would argue it is miles ahead of Metal Slug since it doesn't desolve into quarter-hungry chaos halfway.
It's also the most underpriced game ever.

It's also the most underpriced game ever. Hear, Hear! The game is honestly a steal at 20$ Man, had Cuphead been paced like your usual run 'n gun where you were supposed to beat it in one go without using continues instead of having a psuedo-checkpoint system as it currently has, everybody else would be saying forking over twenty bucks for a game where defeating all bosses in a row takes about 40 minutes and forcing you to restart everything if you die would be a rip-off. It's really a 40-minute game but because of the difficulty and ability to instantly retry each boss without losing progress that becomes an average completion time of 5-8 hours. And if it had been paced as your usual arcade run 'n gun, the time it takes to get a 1cc would be even higher. Apparently putting some serious dedication into being able to beat it all in one go isn't something you can expect everyone to do, which I think is something future developers of these kind of arcade-style game can learn from Cuphead's success. At least a common complaint in the review section of Nex Machina is that you can just creditfeed your way through. I wonder what the responses would have been like had there been some kind of checkpoint system where you only have to retry the current stage instead of being thrown back to start on losing all lives. And Nex Machina has bona fide the same price as Cuphead, on top of a single loop taking longer to beat than a 1lc playthrough of Cuphead, on top of having a second loop!

your usual arcade run 'n gun I'm trying to imagine it being in the cabinets, but you'd probably need a cup of coffee beside.

On PC, I'd say Halloween Harry/Alien Carnage (With Duke Nukem 2 a close 2nd) Hey, someone that talks about Halloween Harry! This takes me back to my years of middle school when one of my classmates gave me floppies with all the episodes, he hated it but I enjoyed burning zombies and mutants down with the flamethrower and managed to complete all of them (I think). Not great by any means but still fun and playable! Other obvious choices are the Metal Slug series and the super-cool Alien Soldier. For a little more obscure thing I always liked Capcom's Midnight Wanderers a lot, the one included in the Three Wonders multiple choice arcade. Sometimed I wonder what it would have been as a standalone game.

Heh, I used to run a Halloween Harry website yonks ago, I still have it saved oin my PC, I've just been too lazy to find somewhere to host it.
