Jurassic Park for the Master System is a great, but I'd say it's a bit too bright and colorful and the music too cheerful to be called "dark". (The first Genesis game is much darker - but also a significantly worse game). The SNES version of Batman and Robin fits the description perfectly in my opinion. The Genesis/MD one sure is dark, but maybe too hectic and too "techno" to be "moody"? Nosferatu seems like a good choice, too. Gameplay is not as good as in Blackthorne or Prince of Persia, but it's certainly dark and moody. The intro alone is pretty cool: Yeah, I considered the MD one but I like the SMS one much better gameplay-wise. It gets kinda creepy in the in-doors levels at least, and the vibe in the cutscenes is kinda ominous as well. The Amiga one is perhaps the darkest, but not that great either. B&R on MD's music is definitely moody to me, particularly the melodic tracks. Kind of a techno/industrial blend overall. Sometimes it's just kinda energetic though I guess.

I really like these types of games when I am sick of Mario stuff. Any other really good ones besides these games Dahna:Megami Tanjou(Genesis) Shadow Dancer(Genesis) Legendary Axe 2 (TG16) Splatterhouse series Shadow of the Beast series Blackthorne Games like Castlevania,Metroid and Ghouls and Ghosts aren't what I am looking for. Legendary Axe 2 is my joint! The music in that thing is incredible. Best ost on the turbo. Who did that soundtrack and where can I find more of their stuff? And any similar non-cd soundtracks for the turbo?

While it's not 16-bit, I recommend you check out Forbidden Forest on the C64. It's moody and unsettling:

That's a shame. While technically 32-bit, there's a few GBA games I'd mention. The handheld always came across as 16-bit to me. Some decent licensed material like: -Buffy the Vampire Slayer -Nightmare Before Christmas -Batman Begins -Shaman King 1 and 2 -Gegege no Kitarou(good luck understanding what's going on though) There's a very halloweeny game called Spirits and Spells but that might be too whimsical in nature. Altered Beast has some dark themes but comes across as goofball.

There's Gon for the superfamicom. Like the manga it's based on, it's cartoony in the main character's design and human-like expressions in otherwise realistic animals and occasionally its humor, but otherwise it's very grounded in its hardscrabble naturalistic themes. Most people would recognize the protagonist as a Tekken 3 character, however, but this is nothing like it in tone.
In the game, only nature sounds and the bongo effects for Gon's footsteps are heard, absolutely no soundtrack here. Many scenes take place in desolate places and often at night.

Check out Blade Warrior on the Amiga. It has a very distinct art style that looks a little bit like Dark Souls meets shadow puppetry. Also, there is no HUD at all and the moon serves as the health bar. The game itself is a bit bland though, a typical side-scrolling hack'n slash with some light adventure elements.

Howzabout Realm for the SNES? I'm a little surprised it doesn't come up more often.

I'll also add EVO: The Search for Eden. There's something about that game that really gets under my skin. There's this constant sense of...I'm not sure -- foreboding, maybe? It's like you're dangling on the precipice of extinction, which you are, and everything around you is in the same boat. I think it might be what you're looking for.

Feral Umbra--shaping up to be a Shadow of the Beast clone ( link). Looks interesting. There's no reason a SOTB inspired game can't be good. The OP didn't mention the Neo-Geo but Magician Lord would fit the question asked.

First Samurai on the SNES Yes! This game rarely gets mentioned and while it's no hidden gem or anything, I find it to be decent and quirky enough to enjoy. To the OP, if I may do a bit of shameless shilling, I wrote an article on my site highlighting 35 SNES "Halloween" games that go well against the backdrop of this season. Feel free to check it out here: rvgfanatic.com/wordpress/index.php/snes-halloween-special/PS- I absolutely agree with you on Blackthorne!
