For me, it is Final Fantasy VII. Much loved, but it is an incomplete game. It feels so rushed towards the last disc. In what way? When I first played FF VII, I imported it from the local game store. The original Japanese version some CG scenes that made it into the US Final Fantasy VII. Plus, the fight with Diamond Weapon never happens in the Japanese version. When you walk up to it, it will simply cut into the scene where Diamond Weapon faces off against Shinra and the Sister Ray. The fight and CG scenes were put in for Japan later, as a repackaged FF VII: International edition. Besides the last dungeon feeling abrupt, there is just the way that all the extras are handled. Lucrecia is holed up in some random cave, only accessible by submarine. All the special-chocobo access only caves are just rooms with an item. It doesn't feel like they thoroughly play tested the chocobo breeding process with testers to balance the process out. Not to mention you randomly see Aerith at the abandoned flower chapel, where her presence flashes for a few seconds and disappears. As if it was suppose to go somewhere or lead to something. There's a lot of unused dialoge and scenes, some you can only see via Gamesharking to the developer's debug room. thelifestream.net/ffvii-the-original/final-fantasy-vii-the-unused-text-series/It just feels like they ran out of time before the release date. Similar to Xenogears.

I feel like you're overanalyzing things way too much, man. Like, the Aeris thing is just a melancholy flashback... Aeris is dead and Cloud is remembering how she used to tend to the flowers there. That's it. Nothing more to it then that. Most of the secrets are just secrets man. Overpowered items tucked away in hidden caves you need special items for. I'm sure there were some scenes or ideas that were cut, just like basically every lengthy game ever, but FF7 is hardly unfinished, and nowehere even remotely close to being comparable to Xenogears in that regard.

Heh. I've only ever owned the PC version of FFVII and I remember the last dungeon specifically for when the game craps out on me. What a time in the game to fatally glitch out! So I've never actually beaten FFVII.
That said, both FFVII and Xenogears could use a GOOD remake.

Drakengard. It has this really insane story full of mental characters to tell. There clearly is more going on behind the scenes and in the world building that never was put into the final game to not delude from the main point. Every weapon has its own little story that gets unlocked upon leveling them up. It even tries to get away from the monotony of the Warriors-style gameplay by having Panzer-Dragoon-esque dragon flying stages. But damn if it still doesn't play like a cheap Dynasty Warriors clone.
There is also a slew of Adventure Games that are very interesting to experience but not fun to absolute garbage to play, like Darkseed, Harvester or Phantasmagoria 2.

Similar to Xenogears. Huh. Well I agree with feynman about the flashback/ghost part. Where was it supposed to lead anyway? Missing cutscenes, sure, but the US/International version is the finished version so why cling to the other one. And I think the substance of those extras was about expected for FF, though some scenes would've made more of an impact with FF8 or 9 level animation, camera angles and models. I also think the writing is overall worse than in 8 and especially 9 when it comes to character interactions, even after playing a retranslation. But still better than FF1-6 and CT. Dunno about the last dungeon feeling abrupt, you mean you think it pops up in the story suddenly? It's been a while since I played it and parts of the story are kinda cryptic, probably intentionally to give it a certain vibe. I like FF7 but I'm not sure I want to read all of that super detailed unused text guide to maybe find something interesting that isn't part of the actual story anyway, but maybe you can sum up the parts that are interesting about it.

I would say the best bad games are the ones you still cannot do in other games, or as often. Like the tongue tricks in Chameleon Twist or the grab and pinching of Stretch Panic.

I remember a critic in a video game magazine back in the day giving Drakengard a bad review literally for no other reason than they were offended by the incest elements in the game's story, they barely even mentioned the gameplay.

That said, both FFVII and Xenogears could use a GOOD remake. What style of JRPGs that has come ever since and that still is up to date would be a better fit for FFVII? I certainly don't long for a remake that's heavier on cutscenes & party interaction, which is what a remake would pretty much HAVE to be. Really, safe for some classic throwback titles, RPGs got more and more overblown after the PS1 era (I liked the Tales games that came after, though). The 8 bit titles were incredibly archaic, so that really leaves just two console generations worth of an "adequate" style - at least for my preferences.

Contact on the DS. Kinda marketed as an offbrand Earthbound, but it was novel and had this cool, sci-fi melancholy tone to it. The awkward and automatic real-time battle system undercuts it as you get pinballed in corridors because your avatar can't decide which enemy to focus on and it has less of a difficulty curve and more of a zig-zag that ends up spelling out the words "fuck you....maybe?...I dunno." Thats a good way to put it. I also find the game charming just for the sheer audaciry it has to make all these stats and things for suff that really doesn't matter. But, knowing who was involved with the project I'm sure that was the point. Usually that sort of thing annoys me but in case of Contact I found it charming... And hell, sorta on the nose.

I enjoyed Castlevania II. GamerL I have to agree about Brutal Legend. I got pretty far into the game, but it's currently stewing in my backlog. I have fond memories of the first Dragon Ball Z Budokai, mainly because it replicated scenes from the show. Later games had better gameplay, but less time put into the cutscenes. One game that always seems to come up on threads like this: Deadly or Alive Xtreme. I think that SaGa Frontier could count. It has so much potential, but such messy execution.

LOL Deadly or Alive Xtreme is a big guilty pleasure of mine, what can I say? It's really not a bad game for what it is, the volleyball is actually fun once you get the hang of it. The sequel is a mixed bag though, the volleyball is worse and all the other added minigames aren't much fun, but the graphics are prettier which means the girls are prettier and there's more revealing swimwear and the ability to snap photos so..... ya know.... it's got it's pluses.

I really wanted to like Dead or Alive Paradise in a dumb fun kind of ridiculous way. But that incarnation of the subseries was more boring than watching grass grow on the moon.

Dune 2 is pretty hard to go back to now because of the interface and AI advancements of the genre, but the setting and eclectic soundtrack are still great and pretty unique, along with the mechanics of sandworms and only being able to build in certain spots creating a certain vibe of inhospitality. Has a really cool intro as well with nice spritework. Maybe I should look up that fan mod again.

Couldn't you just play Dune 2000?
