What are some games that have a lot to love, certain aspects are great and is a title you really want to love but have major flaws, maybe even going far enough to make it a bad game, but still has redeeming features that make it interesting?
The best example of this I can think of is Double Fine's Brutal Legend, there's a lot about the game that's great, the production values are high, the art style is cool as hell, the voice acting is great, the story is entertaining, it's fun to just drive around the world in your hot rod, but instead of the "heavy metal Zelda" the game starts off as being and should have been it turns into a strange RTS type deal that frankly kind of sucks, it's worth putting up with to enjoy the game's world and story, but is not much fun at all.
Brutal Legend is probably one of the bigger instances of a missed opportunity in gaming that I think of and is probably the best game that still has a major flaw, what are some other examples?

you could make the argument that the NES version of final fantasy was a bad game, given all of the gameplay bugs that it had. of course it had a ton going for it that made it endearing as it is, non inclusive artwork by yoshitaka amano. another game that comes to mind is the original x-com, which could be straight up infuriating when a string of bad numbers had your soldiers missing stupidly easy shots for a turn and ending up with your squad getting wiped out. also there was the bug that the difficulty setting didn't do anything. funny story on that - i had a hacked version of the game where to difficulty setting did work and ended up getting attacked by a very large ufo before the end of the first month, which was basically impossible to defend against. another title i can think of is castlevania 2 for NES. there was a lot to like about it (general atmosphere mostly), but a lot to hate about it (dracula's riddle, gameplay issues in general). i think that it was an ambitious title and one that really got cut short in production.

Contact on the DS. Kinda marketed as an offbrand Earthbound, but it was novel and had this cool, sci-fi melancholy tone to it. The awkward and automatic real-time battle system undercuts it as you get pinballed in corridors because your avatar can't decide which enemy to focus on and it has less of a difficulty curve and more of a zig-zag that ends up spelling out the words "fuck you....maybe?...I dunno."

I reckon Carmageddon fits the bill. The physics are HORRIBLE, and not suited at all to racing or finesse, but that jank is pretty much what makes the game awesome and unpredictable

another title i can think of is castlevania 2 for NES. That is an excellent example of a bad game that you can nevertheless have a lot of respect for, I myself have never gone through the effort to beat it, though one of these days I probably will, however it's fun to just aimlessly wander and kill things and the atmosphere like you said is great, especially the stellar music. You can tell even IGA has respect for it since there are references it in Harmony of Dissonance and he also retooled some of it's ideas for Order of Ecclesia.

At the time, those physics, esp. the driving model, were pretty good;) Even nowadays I love how the cars feel.

I mean the physics are great, especially for the time. They're just horrible for actual racing, or mowing down pedestrians with any degree of accuracy. It's wild on purpose, which kinda makes the scoring systems borderline genius. Don't get me wrong, I love the game with all my heart. It's just that fighting the controls is all a part of the fun. The power-ups pretty much attest to this, haha!

Not a game I like, but Deer Hunter. The original has terrible gameplay—you select a point on a map and spin in place if there's a deer or choose a new spot if there isn't—but it came out at a time when the computer game market was really starting to expand, and there basically wasn't anything catering to the type of person that likes deer hunting and probably only got a computer for AOL dial-up. I guess it's in a sense one of the earlier "casual" games, but there isn't anything casual about a semi-realistic hunting "simulation". It's an exclusively mobile series now, but Deer Hunter 2017 has a 4.7/5 on the iOS App Store!
For a game I do like and sticking to a hunting theme, Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter. Not so coincidentally from the same publisher as Deer Hunter, but by the developer of Chasm: The Rift. It's very barebones and you weirdly strafe faster than walking forward, but there's just something about trying to take down a T-Rex. This might actually be too good for the point of this thread.

North & South is pretty awful is played as a serious competetive game - some of the maps are incredibly unbalanced, tactics such as stalling are not punished at all and highly effective... but if played in a lighthearted manner, it is incredibly fun and EASILY one of the best Amiga games ever. The NES port is also super fun.
I'd argue Smash Bros Melee fits the same token on a casual level (I know pros have found ways to work with the game's intricacies), but was still a lot of fun.

For me, it is Final Fantasy VII. Much loved, but it is an incomplete game. It feels so rushed towards the last disc.
The Bouncer. It had a lot of great ideas, but the actual gameplay was on the clunky side. Being an odd cross of Final Fight, Tekken, and Kingdom Hearts, it has potential to be a really great game if it was polished to modern standards. But I still enjoy it for how it handles 3 story lines.

But I still enjoy it for how it handles 3 story lines. Same with Resident Evil 6. It sets out to accomplish great things, but looses something in the process. Mercenaries is as fun as ever tho. ** It's highly likely No Man's Sky gonna end up in these lists after few more years. No matter how many reviews i read or videos watch-just can't make up my mind to actually lift a finger to try it out.
