This is the year publishers took this shit too far and I'm glad to see all the blowback it's getting.

They tried and saw how far they could get. We'll see where it leads, especially with the news of commissions in Belgium and the Netherlands investigating about whether the lootbox/microtransactions system may be classified within gambling or not. The PR may spin it in their favor - "Look there, gamers of the Benelux. You've got some bigots who liken our innocent microtransactions to gambling. We may be forced to not sell Battlefront II in your countries anymore because of them!" - and if they ruled in EA's favor, it would blow back to gamers *horribly*.
As partially related, I've been noticing how many Overwatch players are apologists, insisting the game is completely out of the debate (it's been investigated by those Benelux commissions, along with BF2). While the crate rewards are all cosmetic AFAIK, they are still random and so fall under a "gambling" system. And in any case, the explosion of lootboxes and microtransactions in AAA games has happened over the last 12-18 months, right after Overwatch's success. Those fans also seem to easily forget their beloved Blizzard's other half is Activision, with a criticized lootcrate system in Call of Duty WWII (they are opened in public, counting on other players' envy to push them to buy on their own), and recent patents on exploitative system to push players to open their wallets.

Not to mention that EA has been pulling this shit for years in FIFA and their other sports games...
These practices are BS, but the only real way to combat them is boycotting the company and the game. The only way to hurt them is their wallet, EA, Activision and Valve (who often gets a free pass for some reason) are used to bad PR and complaints.

I also see people hoping Disney steps in (and apparently they're doing it, but more for image reasons than anything else), talking like they are some benevolent entity that got screwed by EA doing it all behind their backs. Such selective naivety never ceases to amaze me.

It is like gambling though, fuck all this crap, I hope these courts rule against it. The amount of greed that has infested the video game industry over the last decade or so is staggering, first 60$ was not enough, which is already a lot of money, then there had to be DLC in addition to that 60$ and now even THAT is not enough, now basically they want you to spend money every time you play the game, FUCK THAT and FUCK THEM, when is it ever enough? To quote Captain Picard, "the line must be drawn HERE! THIS FAR! NO FARTHER!"

As I said, just don't support them. Still plenty of devs and publishers doing it right.

The lootboxes in this game are so notorious that it was the front page story on the biggest news site in the Netherlands yesterday. And they rarely write anything gaming-related. As I said, just don't support them. Still plenty of devs and publishers doing it right. It's easy to say if you're not looking forward to the game that much, but if this is a must-own for someone, it might be hard for them to skip. Like, what if Splatoon 3 will have microtransactions? So far I have spent close to 400 hours on Splatoon 1 and 2 combined, so it would be a game I would look forward to very much. Am I willing to miss out on such a big thing for me?

Such selective naivety never ceases to amaze me. I don't think it's naivety, really. I know there were reddit threads very early on saying that we should complain to disney specifically because being associated with gambling will make them look bad.

Didn't all this kind of crap start with smart phone games? The thought of it infiltrating console AAA gaming is terrifying, the Barbarians are at the gates, people!

I'm really glad to see EA/Dice/whoever getting roasted so badly over this, the trend of designing a fully priced game to have content that I have to pay extra for (Especially content that used to just be included in the game) is something I've found sickening for awhile, and I really hope other developers take notice.
Fair enough to try and temp me to spend cash if the game is free to play, but if I'm plonking down hard cash to access the game, don't design it to limit me and expect me to pay to unlock stuff/just be able to keep playing (I heard that the games arcade mode would eventually limit you from earning in game currency. That's downright criminal outside F2P, IMHO)

It does kinda surprise me that there has been such big furore about lootboxes recently, when this shit has already been going on for years and years. Maybe we just finally reached the breaking point?

It does kinda surprise me that there has been such big furore about lootboxes recently, when this shit has already been going on for years and years. Maybe we just finally reached the breaking point? It's just reached a breaking point, if we don't draw the line here it'll get to the point where you'll have to pay a fucking fee every single time you want to play the game at all, imagine "pay to play" Like I said before, the greed is staggering, even by the corporate world standards, video games take the cake in greed when it comes to consumer products, if these shitheads had their way you'd pay 200$ just to play a game for two hours and they'd still be planning other ways to get more money out of you. Enough is fucking enough.
