Everquest, a game from 1999, well before broadband internet was widespread, managed to achieve about half a million players or so at its peak. It still has enough subscribers to not only keep the servers up, but even get yearly expansions.
World of Warcraft peaked at something like 11 or 12 million players, over 20 times what Everquest achieved. It's gonna be around for quite a while.

See that's what I like about TF2. There is a class for almost any playstyle. Even if you can't hit the broadside of a barn you can still be useful as engie or medic.
That said I'm really mad about the recent changes to Eternal Reward. I think it's ridiculously OP now.

Remember how I said that Paladins wasn't pay-to-win? Well, you can safely scratch that game off the list now as a new patch is coming where in casual game modes, character load-out cards can now only be upgraded by getting lootboxes, either by grinding or buying them, and hoping you get enough duplicates to level the cards up. To compensate for this, every card for each character is now unlocked at level 1 by default. www.paladins.com/cardsunbound/www.kotaku.com.au/2017/12/players-worry-paladins-new-card-system-inches-closer-to-pay-to-win/What the fucking hell is this, Hi-Rez? Did you see the firestorm Battlefront 2 made with this shit and decided you wanted to get burned at the stake like EA as well? I feel gutted.

Hi-Rez has a long track record of starting out strong with a new game, then making stupid changes as it goes along.
