Okay. I honestly love how this looks. Oh my gosh. This looks like an incredible, accessible way to bring certain arcade-style gaming experiences home.

"Here little Billy, lemme get my boxcutter and some old boxes and make this Nintendo thingy for you for free, I'm not paying 70$ for it."
Every parent ever.

It looks super fragile to be honest. Fun, but fragile. The piano looks especially interesting. But 70$? Eh, I guess it's cool 'cos it's Nintendo and it's the innovative approach of it that counts. Still, something that doesn't look like it'll easily break would be preferable.

It should be no more than 30$ and even that would be pushing it.

My very 1st thought is that it looks like something that would rip and tear easily.
And one mistake during construction...bye bye thoughts of packpack robot punching or motorbiking, or RC thing controlling.
It IS an impressive concept, but it just seems like a product that 6 months later, you'd like regretfully as some torn up or degrading cardboard and think "Yeah....not the best investment..."

The entire concept is absolute genius, but all the doubts are legitimate. How long before those cardboard objects have some fault and your Switch gets damaged in the fall? Will cardboard set only packages be available, both as spares and to allow who bought one of the game+kit packages to eventually experience the other?
It may be an enduring success (open to future software updates along with the release of more cardboard kits), a resounding flop, or a momentary fad that'll be over by the end of 2018 (they'd still get a nice sum of money in the meantime), but let's be objective, Nintendo could have been just sitting on the money the Switch is printing but they still try something new.

Also what's stopping anyone from making bootleg cardboard kits?

I've read somewhere else that Nintendo Will release the blueprints for free and let you just buy the software if you think you can do it yourself.

Since Nintendo has promised to offer cardboard patterns for free, it seems they're gonna actively encourage people to improvise. After all, the material is dirty cheap, so it's pretty easy to mend and replace. I doubt this will take off by its own, but I assume Nintendo's planned to combine it with their existing IP. Something like Pokemon and Animal Crossing will feel right at home with this kind of accessory.

If someone can get people to buy 70€ cardboard, it's Nintendo.

If someone can get people to buy 70€ cardboard, it's Nintendo. Not the biggest offender, Steamforged Games asking 120€ for its Dark Souls board game, i reckon RE 2 one won't be much cheaper either

Apparently Nintendo will be offering the templates for free so your paying 60 for the cartridge and 10 for the cardboard.
I wonder if it's a different cart for each set though.

This was an instant preorder for me! They lead with the piano for a reason, but it was the bird that made me fall in love with concept for god knows why. I've built wood models my whole life so this is right up my alley. It was the interactivity that really got me. It's not as fun to just have something sitting on a shelf although most of them end up disassembled instead.
Edit: I mean, a piano with a turnable knob is just waiting for a Beatmania to pair with it. Maybe Keyboardmania will return in a special Labo edition.

I probably will never end up getting this, but it's a pretty cool idea. If I were a kid I would've surely asked my parents to get this for me. Mostly, I find it interesting that seemingly Project Giant Robot lives on in some form. If that is indeed what it is. "Here little Billy, lemme get my boxcutter and some old boxes and make this Nintendo thingy for you for free, I'm not paying 70$ for it." Every parent ever. It would definitely take way too much effort to just make this out of cardboard yourself. Especially seeing as how it all works together with the joycons.

I'm not saying parents would do a good job imitating it, just that kids would have to be pleased with whatever they whipped up instead of this 70$ stuff.
