this is why we can't have nice things. I think brutality in modern games is something everyone takes for granted, so we still have nice things if that's what you mean. This wasn't that obvious even 20 years ago when Moral Guardians™ and parents were going ballistic every time a violent game (usually a VS fighter or FPS) was released. I still remember my dad being angry after witnessing my 9-years-old self decapitating multiple opponents with a Ripper in Unreal Tournament deathmach. Ah, the memories... Unless you refer to these ryona games, but Japanese are known for making screwed-up, perverted stuff like this and no one gives a damn there. Which reminds me of a certain kind-of puzzle platformer Crackle Cradle. Dunno when it was released, but judging by the looks, it can pass for an old Flash/Game Maker product. The game's objective is to figure out how to pass through a level without being viciously brutalized by a host of traps and baddies, with three different characters to choose from. A cute innocent platformer indeed... heheh... heh... Whether the effect is intentional or not, I honestly found it kinda cool that the game kills off the character on fatal damage immediately instead of dragging the scene to culmination (like with a lot of examples in this thread). Adds more weight and brutality to the deaths in the way - I wish more actually good games could try that.

On the other hand we have infamous John Romero's Daikatana. Blasted by a rocket? Ludicrous gibs. Zapped by a blaster gun (your own usually)? Gibs. Got bitten by a mosquito to death? YOU DISINTEGRATE INTO A PILE OF GIBS! So ridiculous, maybe Ion Storm couldn't afford normal death animations so every demise in this game is like this. It would be twice as ridiculous if it's intentional.
