I was delighted to see that the The Immortal example was a rare example of somebody else dying, not the player.

For whatever reason, I find the graphic violence found in old sprite based art a lot more unsettling than what you'd see in more modern games.

Crusader games have a lot of nasty ways to die. Some of weapons in No Regret were actually implemented in the game for this reason solely. And say what you might, Hitler's head exploding in Bionic Commando cracks me up every time I see it, it's ludicrous given how everyone else in the game die by just disappearing from the screen.
While not graphic deaths per se, as a kid I was somehow scared of how Lode Runner or Bomberman die in their respective games. Being disintegrated into thin air or ruptured apart like a baloon isn't clearly the nicest way to pass away, even if there's no blood or gibs shown on the screen.
Oh, and I'm surprised no one mentioned NARC so far. The NES port somehow slipped past the radar of censorship and you can turn drug dealers to gibs on your Nintendo. Yeeeah!

Snatcher has a few:
Also there's the genre of "ryona", (mostly) bad games that are usually just an excuse to see their almost always female main characters being horribly brutalized and/or killed. I never liked it, to be honest, but still it fits right into this topic.
A typical example, Demonophobia, which is not THAT old (2008) but still looks like a much older game.

this is why we can't have nice things. I think brutality in modern games is something everyone takes for granted, so we still have nice things if that's what you mean. This wasn't that obvious even 20 years ago when Moral Guardians™ and parents were going ballistic every time a violent game (usually a VS fighter or FPS) was released. I still remember my dad being angry after witnessing my 9-years-old self decapitating multiple opponents with a Ripper in Unreal Tournament deathmach. Ah, the memories... Unless you refer to these ryona games, but Japanese are known for making screwed-up, perverted stuff like this and no one gives a damn there. Which reminds me of a certain kind-of puzzle platformer Crackle Cradle. Dunno when it was released, but judging by the looks, it can pass for an old Flash/Game Maker product. The game's objective is to figure out how to pass through a level without being viciously brutalized by a host of traps and baddies, with three different characters to choose from. A cute innocent platformer indeed... heheh... heh...
