Are the Sonic Advance boss fights auto-runners? I believe they actually loop until you beat the boss. I also cannot remember if Sonic is actually auto-running in this stages. Advance 2 bosses only. Majority of the special stages throughout Sonic series. Sonic and the Secret Rings is part auto-runner. There's a stop and go mechanic and you can "moonwalk" backtracking but no true means of platformer movement.

ommadawnyawn2I'm confused as to whether you're comparing it to Elemental Master & co or Altered Beast in this post. Assuming you mean Altered Beast, as you pointed out in your edit, in Atomic Runner Chelnov runs by himself unless you stop him temporarily, and in Altered Beast, you literally cannot run. A big part of what makes the genre is speed (though genre ancestors like Moon Patrol were kind of slow) and having to react quickly constantly because you cannot stop moving, or only for a second (even in Atomic Runner, it's dangerous to stop for too long and let the screen catch up with you because enemies can appear from behind). I agree that they're still technically kind of close, but try to imagine Altered Beast with the guy actually running by himself at all times; it's a different game. And if you were talking about those shmups, they don't count because they play like every other shmup - there's no platforming element. The whole genesis of the genre is the auto-scrolling and automatic movement from Konami's Scramble (which I think is the first shooter with true scrolling) and most shooters since crossed with platforming elements. I haven't really played Monster Lair enough to know - I thought it was just a shmup like the first level, but I see there are levels where you land? Though you don't move automatically, that's still an interesting shmup / platformer hybrid. I'll give it a go for sure. - Isolated Warrior is definitely another I need to play.

Also, Gun Smoke, Undeadline, Elemental Master, etc. - those are just shmups with human characters. And your character doesn't move automatically, that I recall, but even if it did, they wouldn't count. Some call 'em "Run 'N Guns" and all vids i posted have auto-movement as i see it. It's for you to decide, hope you'll find any that might interest you.

I mean, I'm a fan of Elemental Master already, and I'd like Undeadline if it wasn't so insanely hard, but I don't really see them as fitting within that category, as they play like any other vertical shoot-'em-up. You're walking rather than flying, but it doesn't really change anything gameplay-wise.

No I meant AB. It's true that AR is faster, though the much larger sprites in AB means you'll have less time to react. But of course one is a shooter and the other isn't until you've transformed which is about half the game or less.
Yeah Elemental Master etc. are basically shoot 'em ups with a humanoid avatar. There are a few games like that with platforming though so they're a bit more like AR. Firebird on the MSX and Isolated Warrior (which is isometric), maybe a couple more out there.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about the dragon transformation in Altered Beast. That was pretty cool. Must be where Dragon Fighter on NES got the idea, now that I think about it.
Firebird looks nice, at first glance. Very similar to Undeadline, but it *seems* easier, at least. I guess it's also based on Tezuka's Phoenix, like that weird NES platformer. While we're talking about it, did that style of shmup start with Konami's Knightmare? Seems like there's a few of these on the MSX & MSX2.
EDIT: Aleste Gaiden looks awesome, and I see a whole lot of jumping. Plus the Statue of Liberty heads in the ground in the first level gives it a Chelnov vibe. Definitely checking it out.
I love seeing all those obscure games being mentioned in this thread. It's probably because I only recently started paying attention to shooters and auto-runners, but I've never heard of most of these.

These are shmups, since the background scrolls automatically, the fact that you play as gunslinger or a knight doesn't change anything. It's a shmup just like any other with a spacecraft as the player character.

Aztec Challenge (C64, 1983); each segment contains autorunning or platforming, and some segments have both.

Aztec Challenge looks pretty intense and varied for such an early platformer, compared to, say, the ColecoVision Smurf game or Athletic Land / Cabbage Patch Kids, or even the Pitfall games. I'll check it out when I have time.

Guess some people can't even be arsed to check them out. Isolated Warrior literally just went straight after my post again.

I believe the oldest example of an autorunner is Atari's arcade game Steeplechase (1975):
