And it was pretty freaking cool, The effects were as expected great, storyline as expected not so great but with some awesome scenes. I also got to watch it on this thing so it was all round an amazing experience.

It's a great film. I saw it with my dad (the pickiest person around) and he loved it, too. Did you ever read the comic, Kal? It's really cool because it was actually drawn in widescreen! It's like Frank Miller knew it would be a movie some day.

It's the bitchinest movie I've seen this year... granted, it's the only movie I've seen this year so far, but I loved it.

I guess I'm gonna be the first person who will say I did NOT like The 300.
I'm going to transplant a ramble I posted over at another forum. It's important to realize I went into the movie NOT knowing ANYTHING about it, not even a very basic idea of what the plot was about except that it involved Greece. Therefore, I had no particular expectations.
============ Spoilers
Of course, the movie early on is quick to show us the thing that's sure to attract all the horny teenagers: Lots of nudity, particularly female, and all of it badly-inserted and obviously there just for the sake of arousal.
Its really no surprise that the Spartans held out for so long, because the Persians were flipping stupid and had the strategic capabilities of a Sailor Moon villain. "Oh, they beat our soldiers... I know! Let's send in our Skeletor Ninjas! Okay, they beat that... lets send in Abobo! Okay, they beat him too... let's send in A RHINO!" Not to mention, almost everything the Persians did had a way of killing their own men and yet barely harming the Spartans.
And of course, we have the over-glorified swordfights with tons of slowdown to help try to dramatize them when they're actually pretty pathetic, consisting of little more than guys with builds like Conan (and a temperament to match) doing choreographed dances that result in blood splatters. You know, the kind of battles that would never be seen on the battlefield but are all-too-common in shallow, glitzy Hollywood.
I also didn't get the whole glorification of Sparta. I mean, the real Sparta sucked. Not only that, but I remember from my history class that in a later war, Sparta was actually beaten and had to get its butt saved by Athens. And what was all that stuff about "free man fighting against tyranny" that the Spartans kept spouting? I mean, Sparta was a country where you died as a baby if you were found to be "weak." Most of the mindset of this movie, in fact, strikes me as purely American ideals being grafted onto a historical culture where said ideals really just don't fit.
In general just not all its cracked up to be, unless the only thing you want out of it is a yarring good mess of testosterone fantasy.

The cinematography is great though..the plot is about as thick as paper but it's the kind of movie you have to be willing to enjoy despite that. If you go in expecting something other then Dynsaty Warrior the movie you're going to be a bit disappointed.
And yes the nudity was about as necessary as that in God of War 1 and 2. I honestly wouldn't give the film 5/5 pretty much for the reasons you mentioned but it's better then I think you're giving credit for..slow motion used in it is very well composed and very restrained on behalf of the directory (for bad slow motion see House of the Dead).
And no I haven't read the Gnovel..I may at some point I guess.

To be fair, sexuality of same genders was quite common, or so I am told. Hell, Zeus did it with anything that moved.

This is very true, but greek soldiers wore bronze cuirass and lamellar vests in battle. Going shirtless made you an easy kill And Xerxes would've probably had a full grown beard and wore regal cloth to show his status. i'm just nitpicking though.

Some days after the movie reached theaters, some purists have been criticising the movie for messing around with history to make a better movie. Ugh.

Nice action. Who cares about historical accuracy in a movie based in a Gnovel?
