The onomatopoeia for staring probably cannot be blamed on anime. But then, it's not like we don't have similar over here. Sure, we be very literal by using "stare" instead of something else, but most of the onomatopoeias I've seen from Japan make some sense when you know a little of the culture, or think about it. An example is we use "Meow" most times for a cat, but they use "Nyao" a lot more often. Both sounds are accurate. Anyway, I like all types of shows, though I admittedly have to be in the mood for them

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is an all time favorite of mine. I love dark/morbid humor and satire and such and SZS just nails it all on the head so well. I love its social commentary and the fact that some episodes even make jokes at the viewer's expense. It never fails to crack me up, and it usually has pretty rockin' OP and ED themes.
Kaere is the best, and if you don't agree, I'll sue!

SZS never really did anything for me- there were just too many puns that you needed to know Japanese to 'get'.

I literally just finished watching the last episode of Kemonozume, and I... I literally do not know what to say about it. I'm gonna have to let this one digest, because my mind is full of fuck.
I thought I knew where the show was going, but... um... wow. Jesus.
EDIT: I can say that the soundtrack was fucking fantastic, though. Same for the animation, minus a few really bad occurrences of rotoscoping.

Okay, so I started watching Durarara! the other day, a show that I've been pretty much ignoring up to this point.
Holy fuck, it's good. I ended up watching every available episode one after the other, and am now eagerly anticipating the next. It starts out pretty mysterious, with several different plot threads that are separate at first, but begin to come together and overlap more and more over time. That, combined with the way each episode is narrarated by a different character, instead of being entirely from the perspective of one character, leads to some really interesting storytelling.

What the fuck. I just finished Gun x Sword, after many people saying how much they liked it. What a redundant piece of shit. I have never felt like I wasted my life watching an animated series.

I watched Spice & Wolf streaming on ANN because I was curious. I thought it might be boring but I actually really enjoyed it (so much so I finished the first season in two days). If you don't mind all the action being about making money and trade goods it's very enjoyable. Also nicely animated. I'd actually give this an 8 it was very enjoyable and pretty smart.
I'm working on Gun Frontier right now. Which is basically Harlock and Tochiro in the old west. I'm not in love with this and all that is steaming is the dub (which is actually pretty good). It's trying to be melodramatic but it can't quite get there. I'd give it a 6.5 it's ok but it's lacking in some sort of quality for me to bump it up in score. It's not long though and it makes a good watch while I work on a cross stitch.

The more I watch Heroman the more I love it.It's tremendously enjoyable and it's a more than welcome throwback to the Silver Age days, when the aliens were bad and the humans good.Despite its simplicity it never gets dull and the animation is very good (it's Studio Bones we're talking about after all). That, and I'm absolutely amused by the absurd amount of hateful comments this series is getting just because the producer is Stan Lee.

I just picked up a bunch of old VHS tapes, hand labelled as "Robotech Misc." One of them contained this: www.veoh.com/browse/videos/category/animation/watch/v6991197DKyHqgMB"Robotech III: Not Necessarily the Sentinels," an ancient (1989!) fandub incorporating parts of Gunbuster, Genesis Climber Mospeda, and Macross: DYRL; man, is this thing great. It totally tears the source material to pieces (while still paying surprising tribute), and it had me and my best friend alternately laughing our butts off and gasping in disbelief.

I made this up for a post else where but I thought I would share it since it did take a way more time then it should to make: The top 5 are pretty much in order but after that it starts to get a little shaky. It was actally pretty hard for me to think of 20 titles that have really stuck with me over time. Hellsing does refer to the TV series, which I thought was great until the point the started to make crap up. I think some of the stuff was better done in the TV series then in the OVA. Though I still like the manga much better then both adaptions. As a franchise I like Umineko better then Higurashi. It's just I had read the Umineko novels before I watched the anime. Which made the anime much less enjoyable. Higurashi was pretty much a blind watch and I knew nothing about it the first time I saw it, so the anime left much more of an impression on me. Though I'm reading the Higurashi Novels right now so I guess we will see what I think. Other then that I made a manga list also. Which I found hard for the opposite reason. I wanted to add so many titles but I had to limit myself.

I just saw Nodame Cantabile (first season) per my GF's request.
I enjoyed it a lot. The orchestra-porn always appeals to me; not surprisingly, as I've always been a bit of a music nerd.
The characters are pretty much all interesting. Though the male lead, Shinichi Chiaki, has MAD SKILLZ, he doesn't seem at all unbelievable (his dedication is demonstrated to be borderline crazy). The female lead, Megumi "Nodame" Noda, is almost ridiculously cute but actually tends to border more on the improbable, despite being based on a girl of the same name that the manga author is regularly in contact with.
The manga that it's based on is clearly a solid title, selling well and winning awards, but one of the most notable flaws of the medium it uses is that the music that they play can only be hinted at and never demonstrated with actual sound to back it up; given that "artistic interpretation" of the various works featured in the story (which is of course a rather controversial issue in the realm of the virtuosos) is a major plot point, it's hard to demonstrate differences without an actual audio comparison. However, those not familiar with the music might not be able to tell the difference between some of the "good' and "bad" performances in the show. Even I wasn't in a lot of cases, to be honest, though I don't deny that someone would probably be able to do so rather easily.
The biggest problem, though, comes along with this advantage. Most of the performances are played with recordings over a lot of still/panned frames rather than actual animated sequences. Considering the popularity of the manga it's surprising that the animation budget was apparently so limited, but it doesn't ruin the enjoyment of the anime too much; in fact, some of the most amusing segments in the show were outside-of-performance banter among several of the characters. (Heck, I agree with one of the more prominent side characters that we need more electric violins, esp. in rock music!) The only problem is that these still cuts are so frequent an the performance sequences long enough that it feels like a 12 episode anime stretched out to 23 by use of slideshow/picture drama filler -- though compelling picture dramas with veeery good backing music.
I've heard tell that the live-action drama (which had Juri Ueno playing as Nodame) is apparently superior. Though I've not seen it I could understand that in this instance.
I'm watching the second season (Paris Chapter) and enjoyed the first episode. I'll start the second one soon. From what I can tell it seems to cut down on the main issues the first season had (and it's only 11 eps. long so it's quite likely), making it even better.
Ultimately, even if a lot of Nodame is a slideshow, it's still a damn compelling one. Definitely recommended for people more into audio experiences than visual ones as well.

I made this up for a post else where but I thought I would share it since it did take a way more time then it should to make: Schweet. Though I'm not into 'girly' anime like Utena, Cutie Honey, etc., but I love it when people do a top whatever list. Let's me remember new stuff I want to check out.
