I'll second Chaos Legion. A crappy game with awesome music.
Also, Xenogears. My favorite Mitsuda soundtrack along with Chrono Cross. I just wish the game was half as good.

If I may attempt to redeem a portion of myself from the previous post, I can attest that the NES game "Gimmick!" does indeed have music and playability of appropriate contrast to match the theme, or at least does so to a greater degree than whatever else I mentioned. However, the (E) "Mr. Gimmick" edition's music is sped up and off-key, and I've found the official NSF file doesn't play back the extra sound channel properly, and I'm probably not downloading a whole new set of pluginnable trinkets for something I can easily yank from the game's soundtest (hold select and press start at title screen). I made a few midis, but [various excuses].

Lessee...
-Haunted Castle -The Castlevania Adventure -Super Adventure Island 2 -Metal Slugs 4 and 5 -Family Feud (for the SNES) -Castlevania: Curse of Darkness -Batman (for the NES)
Oh, yeah. Forgot Mr. Bones for the Saturn. It was one of the few games that had an American-released soundtrack. The premise behind the game and the music are both awesome, but sadly the game is somewhat lacking. Hey, Mr. Bones might actually be a good HG101 article... but first I've got to start and/or finish other ones.

Soulblazer. It can be argued wether it's a good game or not, but I don't think it's hitting any top 10 lists.
This also reminds me of the first time I ever heard a voice clip in a game: Wheel of Fortune for NES. They copied the mob-mentality "WHEEL..... OF...... FORTUNE" downpat.

Hey, NES Batman is an awesome game with an awesome soundtrack. That doesn't fit in here...! '>_>

Well, it fits in my book. The combat could've used a lot of work, although wall jumping was pretty fun, I'll admit. I'm rather fond of the TG16 Batman, which is kind of like Pac-Man, although with an incredibly awesome soundtrack (hell, one song is a direct remix of the first level theme from the NES Batman) and much less difficulty.
Oh, I forgot to mention Mr. Bones. Wonderful soundtrack by Ronnie Montrose, but it needed some polishing in the gameplay department.

Metal Slug 6 *teh slaughtered* Slaughtered indeed. I haven't even played it yet! I'm going to say that the original Fatal Fury will fit in here. It was SNK's first ever foray into fighters, and admittably, they had a long way to go before they could match up to SF2. FF's control is somewhat unrefined and not as tight as it was in FF2, but it had some rather kickass and catchy tunes. After all, it WAS the first game with Geese's evil hard rock theme. ;D

It was SNK's first ever foray into fighters, LIES! ;D SNK's first 2D fighter is Street Smart. Worth checking out on MAME as it has some interesting ideas that carry over into other games. For one, two player coop. Also instead of precanned combos you have a few punches/kicks that change depending on your distance from the character like in the Technos/Tradewest games of yore. Also Michael Max/Sound Beach's theme originates in this game. The announcer is a blond haired guy in a red suit though he's much happier than how Geese looks in the FF1 cutscenes. Player one looks a lot like Takuma Sakazaki but younger, player two looks like Lex Luger when he was all American. The second opponent in the game is a capoeira type guy that looks like Bob Wilson.

Oh snap! I forgot all about that game... seems like it introduced some good concepts, but I imagine it fared not so well. Exalt to the SNK historian!

One of the later stages in Street Smart is a trucker rally...pretty impressive to see that much color in an earlier SNK game, actually.

While I actually like the games, most of you do not. Command and Conquer Red Alert, both installments have AWESOME hard rocking soundtracks that are very much worth checking out.

Quartet from sega would qualify for this, the game's a little stale but has some of the best traditional action game music I've ever heard, making it more than worth playing.
Althought it's a little rare.

POWER INSTINCT MATRIMELEE: The game itself is pretty mediocre, but the soundtrack is pretty high quality, my favorite is "Let's go! Yin-yang fortune teller" and some of the non-lyrical stuff is pretty good too.
Even you guys might not know about this one.... TOKYO EXTREME RACER The first game had some of the greatest Tokyo street racing music you'll ever hear. The second had more of a western soundtrack, and Tokyo Extreme Racer Zero had REMIXED tracks from the first two games! A little fanservice for me and the three other people who played the whole series. Everything went downhill with the TXR3 though.... but the original and zero are still really great.
Speaking of Dreamcast... VIGILANTE 8: Second offense. Actually the game isn't mediocre at all... it's really good! But it's not well remembered, and is often just shrugged off as a Twisted Metal clone. But the music is perfect for the setting of the game... if you like 70s disco/car chase music that is. You'll be surprised by the soundtrack, to say the least.
FIGHTERS DESTINY (on Nintendo 64, argueably the best fighter for the system). It's 50/50 with this game... but Ninja's theme, Mei-ling, and Joker have great songs... with an old school feeling to them. That could just be my personal feelings towards the game, since I have many fond memories of it.
