Megadrive was in its time, and probably even more so nowadays known for having a rather bad sound in comparison to other systems of the same time, such as SNES and Amiga...
And I agree, as far as the capabilites go, which is why many people might not have even listened to Megadrive music... But with skill and talent some people managed to pull of great music on the MD as well.
I suggest people listen to tracks from "Warriors of the Eternal Sun", and ESPECIALLY "Musha Aleste", which has some of the best music ever in a video game... Which is especially funny since the sequel was a Sega CD game, with naturally also CD quality sound. Too bad the actual music was nowhere near as good, so congratulations .

Ha ha. I much much much prefer the synth sound of the genesis to its other contemporaries. Good suggestions, and may I also recommend Hitoshi Sakimoto's (of Final Fantasy Tactics fame) earlier stuff-- Midnight Resistance, Verytex, Devilish and Master of Monsters. Also, Motoi Sakuraba pulled off some great sound too with Granada. Herzog Zwei is another no-brainer awesome soundtrack, including the legendary Thunder Force series. Phantasy Star II (English version) has a great few songs as well.

Genesis/Megadrive music database in a format that kicks the crap out of .gym. Also, check out the forums to witness a really devoted fanbase-- even tools to track/program your own music for the system.
Many songs from the Genesis version (as well as the other versions) of Side Pocket are good. I also like the music in Minnesota Fats: Pool Legend, also by Data East. Good thing that most of the games comes with the Jukebox mode and has all the tracks named.
The Genesis was better at doing rock music than any other console. So, in addition to those mentioned, I'll add in Contra: Hard Corps, and Battle Mania Daiginjou (the Japan-only sequel to Trouble Shooter that was recently fan-transed)
