Nearing the end of a massive article. Over 50,000 words done and so many pics. Just 1.5 more sections to go, then I can proofread.

I'm going to start writing an article on Konami's adaptions on Hi no Tori/Phoenix manga for the Famicom and MSX. I've only played a bit of the MSX game and it reminds of Undeadline. I'm quite familiar with the Famicom game though. Looking back on it, I think it was a very bold game for its time due to the non-linearity of the game. Naturally the first time I played it, I ended up going in circles before I realized there was something I was missing and had to consult a FAQ heavily, but I'd like to give it another chance. I'm also going to read the manga to see how the games compare to it.

Cool. The MSX2 game is covered briefly in the Konami Shooters article, but it can always go more in depth.
IIRC, the manga had several various chapters that focused on different characters, which is why the games star different protagonists.

I think they're both based on Gao, the protagonist for the Karma book. One of the things that inspired me was reading about the game and how Gao travels through time to recover the stolen pieces of his Phoenix statue and ends up in the time periods when the other stories take place. Essentially this is just an excuse to read the entire manga series.

Essentially this is just an excuse to read the entire manga series. It's really good, although Tezuka never finished it. Gao/Saruta/etc. appears throughout time in that series in different forms, as do several other characters (because of the reincarnation theme). Gao gets a deformed nose because of the evil things he does before his redemption, and it gets passed down to the other versions. Anyway, there's also cameos by other Tezuka "actors/actresses" like Rock.

Kurt, is there any interest in resurrecting Your Weekly Kusoge as Your Periodic Kusoge or something to that effect? I'd started one ages ago that I didn't finish, and I'm wondering if it would be better to just beef it up to make it a regular article.

I think we need to roll call who is working on kusoge. It is a segment that should still be around just doesn't have regular updates. I have two in the works and I don't know if I can beef them up either.

I agree that the feature shouldn't die; maybe just set more realistic, periodic goals for releases?

I would, but I think I'll have to sit down and create a stricter set of guidelines for it. Basically, the idea behind the column was to get a little snarkier than the regular articles. The whole point was "these games are terrible, let's mock them". But many of the articles I ended up receiving, and ultimately posting...they were fine in their own right, but often didn't capture that sardonic kind of writing that I really wanted the column to be. In other words, it needs to be more than "this game is terrible, here's why it's terrible". At the same time, they need to be more clever than the typical Angry Video Game Nerd poop/beer jokes. For these reasons, soliticting submissions is a little more difficult, because there's a specific tone I've wanted for them, and I don't think I've quite communicated that, especially since it requires a different writing style than the main site.

Part of the reason I didn't finish was I couldn't find an organic way to mention John Holmes in an article about a Sherlock Holmes game.

Oh good, I knew YWK was more lax compared to the main articles and 500 word Indie but wasn't sure how much fooling around I can write (and no I don't really care about AVGN cause he focuses too much on rage jokes.) It would help me write a better opening paragraph for MegaBlast too.

There's something I've been wondering for awhile. What ever happened to the work on that Batman article? Last time I saw it mentioned here the author said it would be out be the time Batman Arkham City was released. That was like two years ago. Is the article still being worked on or is it dead in the water?

I was thinking of writing something for the YWK too, to get my feet wet into whole article writing so to speak. I've always wanted to write something for the site, but I haven't gotten around because of combination of laziness, inexperience and simply the fact that If I ever write something long and "professional" its gonna need some serious spell-checking.

Laziness as well as other stuff is just why I haven't really started those two articles I considered doing months ago (Pinball Hall of Fame and Radikal Bikers/Smashing Drive), other than doing a small introductory text for PHOF and testing the templates.

I'd be up for writing about some kusoge... I'm sure I can muster some snark.
I just have to come up with a crap game with sufficient comedic potential. Any ol' junk won't do. Hmmm...
