I just wanted to address an error in the the article on YS 1 and 2. It incorrectly states that there was no release of YS 2 on the X68000 when there actually was. It was handled by Denpa like the first game and released in 1991, here is proof if needed.

^That's just the X68000 Ys I. The video is mislabeled. There IS a Ys II port to the X68k but its an unofficial home brew of the original PC-88 version.

Ah, sorry for my mistake video wise, I did find a dump of disks for for an X6800 version of YS II though that seems to be different from the homebrew one, which is what spurred my comment above, and is labeled as by Denpa, I think I'll try to load them into an emulator at some point tonight or tomorrow and report back to what exactly they are.
Update: I was mistaken, it's simply another homebrew version.

The PC version of Ys VIII is finally out, but people have been complaining that it is a bug-ridden mess with constant crashes (at least for the Steam version). Did anyone pick it up?

I only played the opening real quick and skipped over all of the cutscenes, to the point where you meet Laxia. I'm not a huge stickler for certain technical things (like 4K resolutions), so I can't really assess it at that level. I didn't run into any crashing, though the text display is jagged, depending on resolution. Didn't run into any issues with vsync running in borderless window. It mostly moves at 60 FPS (which is nice, considering I spent all of my time with the Vita version, which was 30 FPS with substantial drops), and while there's some definite frame drops in areas where their probably shouldn't be (it's not a graphically intensive game at all), it's pretty okay. The only substantial issue I encountered so far is that it only recognizes eight-way controls instead of actual analog. I want to hold off updating the site review until NISA patches some of these things, which they've said they're doing.

Seeing reports of issues from many reviews and reactions, it basically boils down to be lucky enough to have a configuration that somehow doesn't trigger the worst problems (it's not related to having a powerful PC, as some report good performance and no crashes on pretty average configurations). However, from the reviews and reactions, most users aren't so lucky and in general, when so many report several problems, it's clear you've done a bad port that doesn't run properly for most players with the right specs, and this despite many delays.

Question: When I love traditional bump-into-enemies Ys but found Ys 7 to be a total tedious drag and my favorite "modern era" Falcom game is Xanadu Next, will I like Ys 8?

Question: When I love traditional bump-into-enemies Ys but found Ys 7 to be a total tedious drag and my favorite "modern era" Falcom game is Xanadu Next, will I like Ys 8? Probably not. Ys VIII is much closer to Ys 7 - it's certainly richer, with a better designed world and characters, but the core gameplay hasn't really changed much besides letting you jump again.

The original PC-88 score for Ys I is so gorgeous.

Memories of Celceta is releasing on Steam on July 25th. This time it's Xseed and Marvelous handling it again, so it should hopefully go much smoother.
To NISA's credit, they are constantly at work on Ys VIII (the latest update has been released yesterday) and it reflects on the user reviews, currently a little more positive ones than negative. Point is, it shouldn't have gone down this way firsthand, as it's now far beyond the critical release window, a point where unless miracles it's hard to fully recover the damage to the reputation.

So I was just reading the Ys III article and...
Well, I saw the picture of Elena and was like "Wait, didn't I see this girl in a Miyazaki movie where she's rescued by a well-known thief in a green jacket?"
.... Wait.... that's actually genius, when you consider that another way to render "Ys III" is to call it "Ys the Third..."

So, I just read the article on Ys VIII: Lacrosmoxia of Dana or whatever the long L-word was...
Midway through it starts talking about Eternians.
Okay, what is with that word popping up so much in Japanese media? To my knowledge, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe never aired in Japan (I'd love to be proven wrong though) so its doubtful that various RPGs having a place called "Eternia" (and one entry in Namco's "Tales of..." series has a planet called Etheria, like in She-Ra) can't possibly be an homage, can it? Or is it possible that, just like how Wizardry picked up a following because people imported Apple IIes to play it, He-Man and She-Ra actually have a cult fanbase in Japan?
I mean, the thought of Adol Christin being a distant descendant of my favorite cartoon characters and possibly fighting Skeletor one day is cool and all, but its just weird that I keep seeing He-Man terms outside of He-Man.

It was likely just a result of the localization team, I'm not sure what it was in Japanese. It actually may have changed for the re-translation they did, I haven't really sat down to compare them.

Is there any plans to reinstate the dedicated screenshot comparison pages in the Ys article? Comparison pics are nearly my favorite aspect while reading any article and with Ys' rich history of ports having it missing here is almost depressing hehe.
Even without them they are still the best Ys articles I know of. I read them once every year or so.
