Those backstories were from the official manuals that Strata made for the games, I believe. During the games' runs, they offered them up for mail order, I think.
Also, would you believe that Luis Mangubat was one of the character artists for BloodStorm?

...I was about to forgive the writing style of the article until it started making funny with the Rwandan genocide. That just ain't cool.

Well, I guess... what's up with the part about Contra? Yeah, that was just crude for the sake of being crude. Not funny. However, I still do think that the site needs more articles that aim at being entertaining.

I really want to go in and edit it myself, but I'm afraid I'd just end up rewriting most of it.
Also: Mantazz is female.

I only got as far as the end of the first page. Seriously, am I the only one who noticed that literally nothing is said about the game itself? It's all a torrent of bad jokes and awkward references with the fact that it's apparently clunky and has a bad Genesis port relegated to footnotes at the end.
Let's review:
Well before the introduction of the Tekken series, I hammered out a first round win by jamming on the buttons...the final round had me jamming on buttons even harder than before, which led to something shocking. Something neither I, nor my seemingly rodent-amicable companion were prepared for. I lopped his head clean off, thus ending the round.
The game featured 8 playable characters, and a non-playable endboss.
After drudging your way through the many challengers from throughout time and history, you face Death himself.
Time Killers was the only Incredible Technologies fighter to receive a Genesis port, and as suggested above, it's pretty much considered right awful. The original is certainly janky and awkward by today's standards from the get go, but having a home port being even moreso is exactly the kind of sign that'd make Ace of Base open up their eyes.
This is literally all he says about the game. I mean, I get that this is bad, but this is HG101, not some random humor site. It said so little, in fact, that I honestly thought the next page was going to go into some detail, but instead he starts on the sequel, at which point I just sorta gave up.
Is the part with the Ninja Clowns in any way related? Or was it just a random game/joke because the author had a mental breakdown?

I'm not going to try and fit this article into my head right now, but based on a quick skim, people's comments and the Ultra Balloon article, it seems that Christman needs to be told something very clearly:
We all miss Zeroes Unlimited and it's best imitators and siblings. If sites what talk about the video games could once again make us goggle and snicker and groan as those noble MAME explorer logs once did, the world would be a better place. But HG101 isn't the place to try and bring back that style, and more importantly, you aren't the one to do it. No matter how smoothly your GIFs are animated, no matter how obscure and wacky the games are, no matter how randomly tasteless the jokes - it's not going to work. So stop trying.

I'm totally cool with the style of the article, it's just that it devolves into a bunch of completely unrelated dick jokes at the end. I mean, WTF?
Like I said, the intro and the part about Time Killers are both funny, the Bloodstorm part I'm neutral about, but everything in the Ninja Clowns part is HORRIBLE.
EDIT:
Keep in mind that I'm not saying that the article should be changed. I'd personally leave it the way it is. It's always good to have variety on the site.
Why not try passing the article around to other sites and see how people outside of the typical HG101 crowd feel about it?

as the guy who wrote this, i can officially confirm that yes, i am insane. and i'm not even on a single prescription!
and i'll fully admit that i'm trolling with quite a bit of it. especially with the "unfunny" Ninja Clowns section. but to those who understand that the articles match the game, congratulations.
if you've read any of my other articles, you'd know that the intro to this piece isn't my usual style, but like Kurt said, it's really rather relevant from a historical standpoint. it's quite possible that it may not have been relevant to you, but whatever. you weren't young once.
i do like how i've been described as the "unfunniest shit ever" in the Ninja Clowns article, especially with the Contra bit. The Contra bit in particular is probably the best homosexual erotic fiction I've written in months, but it still gets sad faces? and degraded to being "crude for the sake of being crude"? Shame, and lies. in any case, that section actually suffers because it is missing the picture that accompanied the original version of the article on my personal website.
actually, as i'm looking through Ninja Clowns- half the trouble is that the number of pictures have been horribly reduced. this was an issue in the Ultra Balloon article, but i was able to deal- in this case, I might actually have to link to the original article so that things can be rejudged. i understand bandwidth concerns and the like, but i'm starting to worry that the reason that there's been so much negativity is because it became so neutered.
edit: by the way, i have to admit, i wrote a lot of this the way that i did to judge my audience, and to what exactly i could get away with. i want to write here, and i don't mind people disliking my style or articles. but, if you want to give me genuine criticism and critique what you feel is inappropriate, please let me know. preferably by PM. i may disagree with you, but i'm always willing to see the other side of things.
and although i missed that Zeroes Unlimited comment (and i will admit that I'm nostalgic for the days of Castle Excellent), but i am certainly not trying to bring back those days of glory. i know that i'm not the heroes of those days, nor can i pretend to be. but it nearly seems like you're being discouraging of anyone even nearing the style of the good ol' days we all wish we could spread on our hot dogs, whether or not it's intended to be a homage.
oh wait i'm arguing with the internet DANG IT

Actually, this section of the forums is pretty much meant for critiquing the articles.
And I like you style, man. But (and here's my critique:) dick jokes and pop culture references are not inherently funny in and of themselves. I think the fact that the tone of the article seems to assume otherwise is (part of the reason) why there's been a negative reaction.
And don't sweat it about the intro. That part actually works. Looking forward to more of your stuff in the future.

Looking forward to more of your stuff. i'll admit i have a problem: my idol is Chuck Klosterman. yeah, the guy who wanted a Lester Bangs of gaming journalism. which isn't what i'm trying to be, trust me. i realize pop culture references won't go over so well here, but i do like to write to a slightly broad audience. believe it or not, i also write "offensive" jokes i don't think are terribly funny for the same reason. but, i know that jokes like that appeal to such as the VG Cats crowd, so I throw them in. hell, i thought dick jokes died with Seanbaby circa 2002, but he was still making them in 2008 and STILL about Phil Collins, so they still HAVE to be solid gold. right?

The impression the article gave me was that it was the sum product of a generation reared on "new" Family Guy. Pop culture references are not enough to carry a creative work.

Well, cheers on expressing yourself! If you welcome feedback, please allow me to bring up a specific potential issue. You mentioned your jokes and pop references aim for broader audiences, but it seems to me they appeal to much tighter, narrower groups you seem to befriend since half the pop culture names you bring up completely elude me (perhaps because I wasn't raised in the U.S.) and the humor just isn't my taste. In any way, but you can see that you are leaving some of us out already instead of getting a broader audience.
The other thing is that I didn't really learn the basics about the series. I really don't care about character profiles, what their favorite color is, and how much they weight; but I do think that some fundamental information regarding the game's different aspects is missing.
Anyway, thanks for your attention. Everybody has their own style, but I'm willing to bet your article would fit better among your particular group of friends. For now, I guess I'll have to find out about the Time Killers series somewhere else.

I actually lol'ed at this.
I really liked the articles. They're not of the traditional HG101 style, but it's a nice change of pace. I hope to see more in the future!
