My grandmother doesn't have long left to live. I can accept that, it's her time, and she's in a pretty bad way now.
What's pissing me off is that my father is being a bit of a heartless bastard about it because he's embarrassed by her current state of being.

paradigm atoms, little bookshelf speakers. Learned a lesson about properly testing stuff like this though Did they have the stand with them? I've seen those where they're mounted, I wonder if you could keep the stand and just order replacement speakers. |

You might be able to sell them - even broken, people on some of the speaker enthusiast forums might be interested for the cabinets and tweeters.
The problem with dropping in replacement woofers is that the crossover was presumably engineered for whatever was in there originally, so results might be unpredictable. But in practice, there's a good chance they'd still sound pretty good if you got some nice replacements.
I guess the only thing I'd be worried about is it sort of sounds like the factory woofers use some kind of nonstandard mounting, which might be problematic.
But yeah, if you don't want to mess with them, maybe try like Audiokarma or AVSForum and see if somebody would buy them off you. Might claw at least a little bit back on them.

My aunt was somehow like that -and she was very open about it in front of him - when my grandfather was going to die. But when he died she couldn't stop crying from sadness. I don't know your father's relationship with your grandmother but I think that this kind of behavior - in both my aunt's and your father's case - is a result of trying to stay calm and accept the fact that their parent is going to die and they can't see them suffering like that. Maybe it sounds something coming from a typical drama movie but it's fact. |

He's very misanthropic and has found her an embarrassment for years now (he especially hates when she tries to talk about the people that he and his brother grew up with and what they might be doing now). Now, if you want to jump straight to infuriating, that would be when my mother died 5 years ago (to the very day, so it happens). She was the youngest of 7, and her sister (who was the second youngest) pretty much used the funeral entirely as a way to get attention on herself, overacting how 'emotional' she was when for the previous 5 years or so, she'd treated my mother like dirt. I don't think I've ever been so angry at someone, and haven't since. |

Does anyone else hate those little Twitter hashtags that appear in the corner of TV shows now? They seem a little... egotistical.
One thing I dislike is how I don't permit myself to do a lot of things, like expressing contrary opinions out of fear of how others will take them...

I have that problem a bit too. I hold back a lot of my opinions. It's not so much that I'm scared of the reaction, I just find it really hard to muster up the effort to vocalize them and then commit to a potential debate, especially when I know the other person doesn't actually give a shit about any healthy discourse. Arguing with people is exhausting, man. I used to argue about stuff all the time but I guess I burned out.
And speaking of kooky family members, I used to think that some people in my family were pretty alright, but now all these terrible things about them are coming to light and it's kinda sad. I mean, it was a gradual decline but when you hear somebody that you once respected being an awful racist it's kind of a bummer.
