What the hey. I've been wanting to get this off my chest, but the only relevant place to post it also has a large amount of it's fanbase.
I speak of Rationalist Fics. Now, please note that I don't actually read fanfic, so I'm not entirely sure why they bother me in the first place...oh wait.
It's that certain sense of superiority that oozes from the fanbase and their desire to be ruled by the God Emperor after he discovers the secrets to immorality and brings humanity to a new golden age. Becoming said God Emperor also appears to be the one goal of any main character in this sort of fiction.
The only thing that bothers me more is my complete inability to simply ignore it.

Gah, today's not going that well for me. I had planned to go to a library book sale today - it's next week. XD Now I just got a call saying that I need to reschedule my transfer rep meeting for the following week, but the meeting was NEXT Tuesday, and it would have been nice to have known that a couple of weeks ago before I asked for the time off. Now I have to wait until Monday to know if I can rearrange things at work so I can go to this meeting, which is important to get into the UC....*hate face*

Do you think Microsoft would allow something like gamerscore for game of triple 6? No, since all full retail games are 1000 points minimum, and arcade are 200. All DLC has to be a multiple of 50.

I hate the company I work for and I gotta rant like a madman about it!
In the three years I have lived in Japan I have worked for 4 Japanese companies. The first was an English conversation school and while the hours were unbelievable (29 hours per week but a fulltime salary!) I hated the actual work and it wasn't really a career I could rely on.
So then I went to work as an IT consultant at a tiny company. Being a Japanese company it was just full of bullshit, like having to unpaid mandatory overtime until 10:30p every night, unpaid meetings and study sessions during our time off, and sadistic bullies running the company.
That lasted about 6 months before I couldn't handle working 65 hour weeks for the equivalent of $2200 a month (which was a THIRD or what I was making in the US at 40 hours per week). A former coworker called me up and asked if I was interested in working at the company he was at.
So I jumped ship, to an even smaller company but with much better conditions- 45 hour workweeks, better pay, nicer work environment. But I started to notice that the guy who hired me was a big fake and was basically just pretending to do work but instead was bringing his friends out to hostess bars and clubs and claiming they were customers so the company would pay. He eventually got fired when they figured it all out but before that he had brought one of his friends in who basically took over as my boss. This guy was just as bad and he was trying to sell a ~$20,000 portable video transmitter (that sent video over a cellphone link and the quality was about what you'd expect over a 3G connection), and then started to shift the blame on to me that we couldn't sell this junk.
So about a year after joining I started looking and got some interviews. One place in Tokyo which would have been nice but they were not willing to help pay for me to move and when I mentioned my salary requirements (not high at all considering I would be in Tokyo) they basically turned me down.
Got another couple of offers and then on a whim I went to an interview at the place I am working now. It started out pretty decent- I have to work most Saturdays, but I usually get out at about 7p, so I am working 55 hour weeks. They pay overtime, which ends up adding another ~$700 to my paycheck each month which is good I guess.
However, it's just getting stupid. I was hired to take care of their system/network but since I am bilingual I've been helping out with translating catalogs and instruction manuals and stuff. That's fine, I don't mind helping out. However, they recently hired a girl who is the owner's friend's daughter and although she was hired because she allegedly is fluent in English she's not, and so I've been having to do all her translation work as well (in addition to doing reports and answering the phone since she won't). It's totally ridiculous.
On top of that, there is a string of holidays in Japan called "Golden Week." 4/29, 5/3,5/4,5/5 are the national holidays. 4/29 fell on a Friday but since my company is ridiculous we had to work Sat the 30th (also, at 6p my boss came over and told me "at 7p get ready to go to the shipping center to help with packing boxes" and so I was packing boxes until 9p). Then Sunday off. Then back to work today, probably with more late night box packing. Then the three days off. Then back to work Fri and Sat. Most companies are decent enough to give you the Fri and Mon off in between so you have an uninterrupted week off, but not these assholes.
So I'm pretty much fed up with working for Japanese companies. I want more time to spend with my family and friends. I want time to pursue my hobbies (I have jujutsu classes twice a week and I have to miss class more often than I should due to work, considering the classes are late at night). The attitude here that your personal time is worthless so you might as well be working and you can't make any plans because in a moments notice you might have to go help pack fucking boxes late at night is wrong, I don't care who you are or what your culture is. They are in essence saying "packing these boxes is more important than your family" and that simply enrages me. I was not hired to pack boxes- the guys that pack boxes all day were hired to do that. When a server goes down at night, the box packers don't come to my aid so why do I have to do their work for them after a full day of doing my work?

Would it be possible for you to return to the states? Also, I'd always figured you were actually from Japan. Go figure.

I'm kind of stuck here for the time being. My wife doesn't have a green card so I'd have to leave her here until she can get the paperwork and even then there is no guarantee that she will get one. We also pretty much wiped out a good portion of our savings moving here and getting settled in and salaries in Japan make it impossible to save money quickly- people here rely on their bonuses to save money, but due to the economy and the recent earthquake companies are not able to pay bonuses.
I enjoy living here, just working has been an absolute nightmare since day one. Your performance doesn't matter- all that matters is showing your fighting spirit by staying late every night, and looking really emotionally upset when you make a mistake, and your ability to put up with childish bullshit. It's just completely foreign and I will never get used to it.

AT&T just put a data cap in place, so now I'm paranoid about watching too much Netflix (I cut the cable, and pretty much leave netflix on as ambient noise at times). And now I guess I can forget about torrents.
The state of the world seems to get worse and worse.
