That's interesting. I've also been thinking about a way to say a bit more about the endings without spoiling too much...

I heard they were redubbing this...? That would be an absolute crime. Homonculus had such a perfect voice the first time around.

Shadow of Destiny / Shadow of Memories was released for PS2, PC, and Xbox. Unless there's some very notable changes in the PSP version, I don't get "Only on PlayStation" line either.

I think I get it now - the Xbox version was only released in Europe, and it seems that PC versions usually don't count by definition, at least for this kind of exclusiveness-labels. EDIT: Here's an update with all the new info (minus the voice re-recording, as I want to wait for it to be either confirmed or denied) and a few new/changed screenshots (especially decent ones for the PSP version). www.derboo.de/files/update_shadowofmemories.zip

The PSP US version should be out by now, I guess with the good old voice over?

I have the PSP U.S. version. Sorry to say, it HAS been re-dubbed - completely, in fact! Not a single voice seems to have survived from the old version. And while the general public seems to prefer the new dub (based on YouTube comments), I find it a definite step down from the old, ESPECIALLY where Homunculus is concerned. NO ONE can touch Charles Martinet as Homunculus, and while the new guy does a decent enough job, he's just... nowhere near as creepy.
The new versions of the old ladies on the street also seem to be lacking the kitschy charm of the original voices. (:
The translation is also slightly different, though only VERY slightly. It's noticeable, though, in a few spots, and again, I feel it's kind of a step down. Like, there's a scene at the beginning where Eike accuses Homunculus of being the devil, trying to bargain with him. In the original, he says something like, "I get it. You're the devil. The big S. 'In exchange for your eternal soul,' and all that, am I right?" In the new version, he says, "I get it. You're the evil one. The devil. 'In exchange for your eternal soul,' and all that, am I right?" Yeah, "the big S" is kind of weird-sounding, but "the evil one"? That's not a lot better, and certainly nowhere near as awesomely corny. (:
There are also added tutorial screens. This isn't a huge negative, but it IS a negative, as the tutorial screens suddenly pop up at really awkward times - like, IN THE MIDDLE OF CUTSCENES - and kinda break the game's flow a bit. They're also not very GOOD tutorial screens - they're poorly translated, with typos and misspellings, and LOTS of awkward-sounding English and repetition. You can tell whoever translated the tutorial screens wasn't exactly a top-tier localization specialist. (:
There's also some jerky framerate issues (almost solely when you're walking around outside, though), and it looks like none of the extras from the PS2 version (the original trailers and such) are present.
And the intro FMV is slightly different. They "jazzed it up" a bit, with weird filters and visual effects, and remixed the music. It's not bad! I prefer the original, but the new one is kind of cool too.
All in all, that's a lot of negatives, but in actuality, it's not a bad port at all. The re-dub hurts it more than any of the other above-mentioned issues. And on the good side, the graphical conversion from the PS2 is 100% spot-on - this game looks EXACTLY like its big brother, in every way. Like, I seriously don't see even the slightest HINT of a graphical downgrade. And there are no added load times - seems to load just as quickly as the PS2 version, if not slightly MORE quickly.
And it has save-anywhere functionality! I don't actually remember if the original had that or not, but I don't remember it - I seem to recall you could only save between acts in the original. Do correct me if I'm wrong, though.
So for the most part, the PSP version is a very competent, and perhaps even above-average port.

Hm, guess the youtube vid I watched immediately upon release was mistitled, maybe the Japanese version or so... (: Is it possible to turn them off? And it has save-anywhere functionality! I don't actually remember if the original had that or not, but I don't remember it - I seem to recall you could only save between acts in the original. Do correct me if I'm wrong, though. The original had that selfdestructing save&quit thingie in addition to the "real" save points at the end of every act.

It doesn't look like it's possible to turn off the tutorial screens, but don't quote me on that, as I didn't really put a lot of time into looking for a way to do so - I kept expecting that each tutorial screen I got would be the last, then getting interrupted by another one as soon as I forgot they existed. Just had a few looks at a longplay for the version. Gonna take that and your info to write 2-3 paragraphs and update the file once again this weekend.

Cool beans. Thanks for writing this article to begin with, man. More people need to know about this game. Even the PSP version's release didn't exactly seem to give it much of a boost in popularity - there was no fanfare whatsoever. It just came and went, and sank right back into obscurity.
