It's almost Halloween, so why don't you treat yourself to a nice psychological horror game? Try Doki Doki Literature Club, the horror game masquerading as a friendly cutesy animesque dating sim! There's no point (and no way) in hiding that it is a scary game, but the point is how the game will scare you, and there's no stupid jumpscares of sort, but some very out-of-place stuff and stuff that messes with your head... and with the game itself, without spoilering too much. It's pretty clever and innovative to say the least. And it's free! You can download it from the official site: ddlc.moe/ or from the Steam shop. Please try it, but do not underestimate the warnings: while it didn't affect me as much, there are some pretty heavy and discomforting themes throughout.

So there's this Italian developer that wanted to make a visual novel inspired by the sexy ecchi Japanese games of the early 90s, so he went and made a Kickstarter: the result is Oppaidius - Summer Trouble, which reached its goal in less than a week! He's an illustrator who is very open in his love of old games and boobies, and the story is the usual one of the shut-in who meets the woman of his dreams by chance (it IS based on old games after all). To be honest, I don't find the art style appealing at all (looks like those early Western attempts to copy the Japanese style), and the penciled drawings placed over simple pixel backgrounds are quite jarring, but the synth-based music is pretty good... and amazingly he somehow managed to have three Japanese game musicians of a certain fame to make three bonus tracks for his game! And they're great too. I like the mock-up bonus content T-shirt as well, which is more faithful to the Japanese pixel style! The game's official trailer on Youtube (can't embed since the thumbnail can be considered somewhat NSFW)

Anime boob physics are a mystery that makes me really concerned for any characters involved.

I haven't said it was good or innovative, I just wanted to put it on the forum for "patriotism" The part where the girl's boobs cover the dialog box and the guy complains he can't read is kinda funny though.

Let me post something else from Italy then... Black Jewel is a smaller project from Oscar Celestini, after Mastema: Out of Hell. It's slated for a future release on Steam and it may even get a Commodore 64 port eventually, as coders from the homebrew scene have expressed interest. Even with a few concessions, it manages to look and sound like a lost C64 game, especially in the backgrounds, made with sparse details over solid black. Protagonist Ryan the barbarian braves through single screens, with no explicitly defined levels even though there's a boss every few screens and the backgrounds change soon after. To say the gameplay is limited and stiff would be an understatement: just a two-strike sword attack and jumping, you cannot even crouch. Fighting enemies requires a metodical "strike and go" approach. It's intended to be this way and takes some time to master. The huge problem of the game is the massively unfair level design and enemy/obstacle placement. The dangers are often much more than Ryan can take with his limited abilities and agility, he's like a cripple in a world of runners, and there are several passages with no way to avoid damage. Spikes have a large hitbox and, unless you can jump from at least slightly higher than them, even a pixel-perfect jump will end with losing a little chunk of energy. You are often faced with fireballs launched with irregular patterns, so that they may come and hit you when you have no chance to at least try and destroy them with your sword. Even with you get really good, you are at constant risk of death because of gradual chipping of health. There also several instances of bad English. It's a game that had the potential of being a little retro-styled jewel, but ultimately suffers a lot for the lack of one or two layers of polish. It's very cheap, but I cannot recommend it. The game it's meant to homage, Storm Warrior (Elite, 1988), was far from exceptional and this unfortunately follows suit. Can't deny the very limited-run physical edition is nice, though. Oscar is currently working on a Ninja Turtles fangame called TMNT Cowabunga, this time as a fake Game Boy title, and mainly inspired by the early 1990s live-action movies.

As a fan of the original TMNT Game Boy games, this looks very interesting to me. Hopefully there will be an optional Game Boy-green color palette as it's the perfect match for a Ninja turtle game.

Hmm... I bought Mastema the other day with the sales, liked it but was disappointed with the pixel-perfect or otherwise imprecise jumping that ruin what was a great throwback to mid-1990s platform games. By reading this I'm sad to hear that Oscar has learned nothing on that front.

By reading this I'm sad to hear that Oscar has learned nothing on that front. He's got a nice little portfolio of games to date but he's more of an artist, and with maybe the partial exception of Mastema they are more personal passion projects. Black Jewel is a small, quick project he wanted to do and sell only through his blog (he's opened a page in Itch.io only recently), that has gotten far more attention than he ever expected. Even with his shortcomings, Mastema is much better and more enjoyable, also because it balances the moments of frustration with short levels and autosaving. You don't even need to play through it again to see the levels you missed, since a level select is unlocked upon completion. Nice ending too, a bit edgy but makes perfect sense. As a fan of the original TMNT Game Boy games, this looks very interesting to me. Hopefully there will be an optional Game Boy-green color palette as it's the perfect match for a Ninja turtle game. Found out that, indeed, the green palette will be selectable at startup. On the other hand, there will be several concession from the limitations of the Game Boy, especially in the horizontal resolution, that will make the game retro-inspired rather than fully retro-styled. Pic of a bonus stage.

Fight Knight! It's a mash-up between a grid-based dungeon crawler and a first person brawler. Looks great, hope they can make it work.

Dang, this looks like the Mischief Makers sequel Treasure will never make. Actually, scratch that, this looks better than Mischief Makers, I'd say. And it's published by the folk who did Freedom Planet, so that's pretty much an instant sell for me right there.

Honestly, it looks more like a Dynamite Headdy and Ristar combo to me. The level design is especially reminiscent of Ristar's.
In any case, definitely something to add to the wishlist!
