www.hardcoregaming101.net/joeandmac/joeandmac.htmSo that Data East compilation should be coming out soon, and this one is on it. I never realized how completely different the SNES game, despite looking nearly the same. Or the fact that there were like three sequels. I kinda wanted to cover Tomba! next to fit in with a caveman theme, but I might do a few Data East articles first instead.

Wow, I didn't know Congo's Caper was supposed to belong into the series, and was always confused about the 2/3 issue.
I guess by 1991, the term "ninja" had been completely degraded to mean nothing but "awesome action dude" anymore...

Them robots on Joe and Mac Returns look like Act-Fancer from Act-Fancer Cybernetick Hyper Weapon or Rohga - Armor Force both are data east game. Im sure Chelnov from Atomic Runner was a bad guy in the game as well Data East like shoving him in as a random bad guy in games. Joe and Mac Returns is really the third game in the Tumble Pop series the second one begin Diet Go Go all have the same final boss character as well. Both Tumble Pop and Diet Go Go have a Joe and Mac themed stage as well. The same Final boss apears in Spinmaster a Neo Geo game by Data East.

Wow, nice. I thought I knew all there was to know about Joe & Mac. I finally know what the deal was with the 2/3 numbering.

I think Spinmaster should be mentioned in the article as well. Even though its a follow-up to Dashin' Desperadoes, it really plays more like the true arcade sequel to the original Joe & Mac. It even has the whole "choose your ending" bit at the end like Joe & Mac.
I always wondered why Joe & Mac Returns was completely different from the original. I didn't realize it was supposed to be a Tumble Pop spinoff. Data East sured liked to recycled their characters a lot, what with Karnov in almost every game and that Fighter's History spinoff for the Super Famicom that had Chelnov in it.

I haven't played either Dashin' Desperados or Spin Master, but I wouldn't mind giving them their own article once I get around to it.

Reverse for me since I was introduced with the SNES versions and didn't learn about the others until years later. Which is a shame because I'm sure I would have had a lot of fun with that arcade version as a kid.

Didn't you have the option of marrying one of a bunch of girls in Lost In The Tropics by courting them and bringing them gifts? Maybe that was only in the Japanese version, or I'm confusing it with one of the latter Adventure Island titles?

That was in the US version too.

That's right Shellshock. Three random girls behind curtains (the blonde cave girl, the larger cave girl and the dark haired cavegirl whose skin is darker than the others but not so much darker because otherwise it would help you identify her by her feet). You bring them gifts and as far as I can tell, there's a completely random chance you'll get married. You can also upgrade your house and have kids (though I never worked out what triggered that last part). I'm kind of surprised it wasn't mentioned.
I have always been way, way too fond of Lost in the Tropics. There isn't enough money in the game world, of course, to actually use the shops you have access to to any extent, but if you put in the grinding you could really get some surprising results, especially with the house decoration and dating (if you call that roulette "dating") elements.

The article needs a screenshot of Congo in one of the huts of Joe & Mac 2. It gets mentioned, but I didn't see a pic of it.

I owned the cat of the original back in the day, although now I can't for the life of me remember why. I just gave the ROM of Lost in the Tropics a try- what's with the mine cart section? It seems like straight up cruelty to put a "mine cart" section so close to the beginning of the game, particularly one which seems to be completable only by brute-force memorization. 'course, I've always had trouble with that sort of minigame, so maybe it's just me. Don't get me started on the "Jump Jump, Slide Slide" snowboard bits from Mega Man 8... Ugggggggh. - HC
