Downloads: www.fileplanet.com/211794/210000/fileinfo/Hardcore-Gaming-101-Podcast---Episode-6OR www.megaupload.com/?d=T7BTUTU7In this sixth episode of the podcast, myself, Andrew and Rob talk at length about the Sega Master System. And when I say "at length", I mean, AT LENGTH. Including music, the total running time is three and a half hours, which suggests we may have gone a bit overboard. But it's also an extremely extensive podcast, as we discuss pretty much everything related to the system - its origins, its accessories, and its most notable games, including Alex Kidd, Zillion, Wonder Boy, Miracle Warriors, Phantasy Star, Shinobi, Cyborg Hunter, Fantasy Zone, and many, MANY more. (Looking back on it, we forgot to discuss Snail Maze as we mention earlier on. D'oh.) I got tired of splicing music in about 2/3 of the way through. There's already a lot there. Please enjoy!

I'm going to enjoy this a lot, I just know it.
edit...
While we're on it? Who here had a master system back when it was current? What games did you have?
For myself: Wonder Boy Fantasy Zone 1 and 2 Teddy Boy Power Strike Global Defence (and the built in games, obviously)
I really didn't "get" global defence at the time (cause I was pretty young) but I have nothing but fond memories of the other games. Power Strike did kick my ass a fair bit, though.
My cousin had one as well (which is why I wanted it in the first place) and when he got bored with his, he became a great source of trading and borrowing, so by proxy I got to play stuff like After Burner, Choplifter, Space Harrier, Shinobi, most of the Alex Kidd games, and California Games.

Good stuff, listened to it as I played some Golvellius last night.
I didn't own a Master System as a kid, but I did eventually buy the Power Base Converter for the Genesis to play Master System games because I really wanted to play the other Wonder Boy titles.

I bought one off of ebay 10 years ago, explicitly to be able to play Phantasy Star I. A decade later, and it's all still sitting in a box upstairs, untouched.

Cool. Now I can listen to something in the car instead of waiting for that "other" we'll-do-it-whenever-we-feel-like-it-even-though-we-get-paid retro podcast to grace me with its presence.

Jason X: How much did you manage to get the SMS for? I still need to sort of get one...

Dang, that was so long ago...I want to say it was something around $50, and included 10 - 15 games. Not sure what it would cost these days, though I'd imagine demand would be rather low. Good luck!

Jason X: How much did you manage to get the SMS for? I still need to sort of get one... If you have a Genesis model 1, the Power Base Converter is also an option, and as I found while in the market for a Master System, a bit cheaper than buying the system.

I'll look into both when I have a bit of cash to spend

I love the SMS. I found a US model at a yard sale last year, got the PBC as a present, and got a JP model SMS for Christmas. I like how easy it is to play EU games on the US system and even the JP system can play most EU/US games with an adapter from Tototek (only a handful of games have problems, mostly light gun games. It's neat how US card games play on the JP system without need of an adapter.
JP card games work on the PBC, but not the regular US/EU model 1 SMS). Personally, I feel the JP SMS is worth more for Enduro Racer and playing SG-1000 games in AV than for the FM (though I like the FM sound for some games, very few take full advantage of it. It's neat how some games that didn't come out in Japan like Rampage, Time Soldiers, and California Games have some nice FM sound and work with the tototek adapter, though).
Some of my favorites on the system are: Sonic the Hedgehog California Games Wonder Boy III Rescue Mission Gangster Town Fantasy Zone Fantasy Zone II Opa Opa/Fantasy Zone the Maze Bubble Bobble/Final Bubble Bobble Land of Illusion Asterix Gain Ground Alex Kidd in Miracle World
The last game I got for the system was Ghost House. I tried to order it before on ebay, but it never arrived from the first seller I ordered it from (I got a refund from that seller). This time I ordered from a different ebay seller. It came with a box and arrived quickly. I like the game so far, though the vampires are a bit cheap. I also like how the game works on the JP SMS.
So far, my favorites on the SG-1000 are Orguss and Zaxxon. I like Zaxxon better than the CV version. I also have Exerion, Sindbad Mystery, Safari Hunt (actually a port of Tranquilizer Gun), Champion Golf, Star Jacker, and Star Force.
One thing that surprised me about the JP SMS is that it feels a bit lighter than the US model despite the extra FM sound board inside. I think it's probably because it's missing the RF stuff from the US/EU model.

Now let's hear a 3.5 hour podcast on the Lynx.
