You guys need to do this far more than annually.

I agree, the podcasts are all very entertaining. Woot for Zillion and Alex Kidd, but no mention of Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine? lol

Sonic Chaos and onwards were made for Game Gear first (by 1993 the Master System market had dried up), and you can really tell as that game really suffered on Master System, with the game running with perpetual slowdown. Sonic Chaos has perpetual slowdown on the Game Gear. The SMS version may not be optimized for 50 Hz (seems to run closer to the GG version's speed in 60 Hz). There's nothing wrong with liking the game. The odd hit detection can be worked around. Walking forwards and hitting the punch button is far from the most effective way to play the game. I disagree with the podcast about it being better than the arcade, though. I'm listening to the podcast. The SG-1000 got a bum rap. The CV has the same choppiness issues with some games, but they are glossed over. I didn't find Dragon Wang to have poor controls (and none of it's unique features compared to Kung Fu Master are mentioned in the podcast. No mention of how it is the precursor to Kung Fu Kid for SMS either) and I found Zaxxon to be better on SG-1000. SG-1000 also has some nice games like Star Jacker, Orguss (precursor to Transbot!), and Monaco GP. Zaxxon CV is very different from the arcade, but the podcast claims its very close despite it's many differences. Zaxxon SG-1000 has some unique features and better graphics than the CV version (it also opts for slower scrolling compared to the faster, but still choppy, scrolling of the CV version). SG-1000 Zaxxon is different from the arcade, as well, though. Both have unique elements and enemies. Neither version has a bonus for shooting down a certain number of enemy planes like the arcade. CV version has odd egg like enemies and SG-1000 has UFOs in some space stages (though the UFOs seem to function the same as regular ships). SG-1000 Zaxxon has Tunnels ala Super Zaxxon. The podcast said that Fist of the North Star was same as Black Belt, but it has some non-atheistic differences. A couple stages in Fist of the North Star have platforms that you can jump on, which isn't the case with Black Belt. Some bosses aren't just different graphically. Gonta (sumo wrestler) is completely different from Devil Rebirth. It's cool that Ghost House was mentioned. I have been playing it recently and I love it. I like how the US card can be played on the JP system as well. The Renegade part is full of misinformation, which I'm surprised since there's a Technos article here and plenty of places to look up information. Technos is NOT Technosoft and the SMS Rengade was programmed by Natsume, not Technos. Poor Fantasy Zone the Maze. Contrary to the podcast, you can't shoot at will and need to pick up money to buy power ups. I personally found it to be a neat take on Pac-Man style games and it's sad the time wasn't taken to learn the mechanics. Wonderboy has some differences from the NES Adventure Island, aside from the graphical and musical ones. It has 10 worlds, rather than 8 like the NES. The 10th world is found by collecting all of the dolls. I like how the gun was mentioned, though it's disappointing there was no mention of Rescue Mission. Rescue Mission and Gangster Town are my favorites for it. Safari Hunt is good, but gets repetitive after a while. It's odd that there is a SG-1000 game named Safari Hunt that is a completely different game and a port of an arcade game named Tranquilizer Gun. It's odd that Impossible Mission is mentioned in comparison to Zillion, but no mention of how there is a SMS port of it. I heard it's a very faithful port with better graphics than the C64 version. The podcast mentions that Back to the Future II and III are awful games, but doesn't mention that they don't work on US systems. Batman Returns SMS has similar graphics to the GG one, but different level layouts and some major gameplay differences. From what I tried, the SMS one seems to be better (enemies take too many hits with the GG one and level design seems better for SMS, as well). SMS Batman Returns also has the same music from Yuzo Kushiro.

The thing with these podcasts is that since they're done live, all of the information we have is off the top of our heads, it's impossible to research every little thing we talk about and make sure it's 100% accurate especially given the breadth of the topic we're covering. Sometimes we plain misspeak. It happens in conversation!
We know there are some cool games that feel through the cracks when it came to discussion but I think the length as it is was kind of insane - plus it was getting late on a Sunday when we recorded it and we all had work the next day - that it needed to get short.

Yeah, the podcasts are done live and with very little editing. Some music is spliced in here and there, but all the conversation is done in one take. You get mistakes because we're not robots that remember everything 100% accurately, especially with the nitpicky details. You also get certain people that mistake a beer bottle for a microphone. >_>

I listened to this in the car a few weeks ago on a trip. Got me through some pretty desolate areas of Iowa, heh.
I remember someone saying that there are new 3d glasses that will work with the SMS. Got a link to these, or some search terms? I have a pair but they're cracked.

Got a link to these, or some search terms? I have a pair but they're cracked. I read about these on the smspower forums. You still need the card that plugs into card slot of the SMS1 or PBC or a JP SMS with the 3D port built in to use them, though. I heard the Famicom 3D glasses work too.

No it doesn't, it slows down minor amounts during gameplay, only when there's a lot on screen does it annoyingly slow down, Master System Chaos literally slows down badly every time you jump or move at any speed, the scrolling judders much worse too.
The SMS version isn't optimised for 50hz, you can tell by the music and game speed, I'm talking about it being played on 60hz. Sonic Chaos actually plays better on 50hz, yeah the game and music plays slow all the time but at least its consistent.
The "odd" (badly programmed) hit detection shouldn't need to be worked around.
Dude, walking off the edge 30 times during a stage and blundering into the enemies is a effective way of playing that game! it gives you unlimited continues and on the spot respawns until the last level!
Funnily enough I just played this game too and I have to agree its an awesome underappreciated little game, a budget card game too!
SMS Batman Return is much harder than Game Gear, but I prefer it too, it has that hardcore 1 hit kill Shinobi style to it on SMS, forcing you to stealthily and carefully leap down to kill the enemies.

I think it's just more noticeable on the SMS than on the GG due to the smaller screen, but I'm going by videos and what I played in emulators (though I played the real GG cart a few times). I'm aware that default settings on some emulators mess up the speed for Sonic Chaos, though. I thought by perpetual you meant many slowdowns, not constant major slowdown. edit: I think I got Sonic Chaos mixed up with another game. Sonic Chaos seems to be one of those games that adjusts for speed. When I tried Sonic Chaos via emu, it ran with correct music in both the proper 60 Hz (not the incorrect settings in meka) and 50 Hz. Sonic 1 I know for sure runs faster and has slowdown more noticeable in NTSC, though I have the cart of that and still like how it plays in NTSC despite the slowdown. I generally heard that it plays too slow in 50hz and my try on emulator seemed to suggest so. I noticed a lot of slowdown on both GG and SMS in 60 Hz, but the speed in 60 Hz for the SMS version seemed to be better than in 50 Hz, despite the slowdown. TBH, I'm on the fence with Sonic Chaos since since it's a very easy game. BTW, I tend to use cautious wording on purpose. I know full well that it the music and game play are slower than GG in 50Hz, but at the same time it was a game released mostly in Europe (though it came out in Brazil, which is 60Hz PAL). edit: see above edit. I was probably thinking Deep Duck Trouble or something. I didn't say it should, but Double Dragon is far from unplayable and many of the moves are more useful than they seem once the odd hit detection is gotten used to. The AI is also more forgiving than in other versions of the game, so, IMO, it balances out. It's not a very good way to play the game, nor a fun one, especially since the continues are optional. I don't see the logic in likening continues to lives, especially to that extreme.
