I liked Alien Wars on GB. I mean, it was by no means a good game, but it wasn't unplayable and I had fun with it. The music was atrocious, though. The GB version of Contra: The Alien Wars had no reason to turn out the way it did, considering it came out three years after Operation C. I wonder why Factor 5 messed up so badly when they had the ideal template, especially considering their Turrican games were not that bad if I remember correctly (I'm going to guess lack of experience with the GB hardware).

I would honestly rather play the GB game than that awful GBA port thing.
And yeah, Legacy of War is the clear winner (loser?) for this one. I actually kinda liked (parts) of The Contra Adventure.

Contra Advance was a half-assed port too, but it's a masterpiece compared to the original GB version, although that's an unfair comparison due to the hardware differences between the two. All things considered, I like how the GBA version allowed you to briefly change back to your previous weapon if the new one you get isn't to your liking (even though that was obviously added to make up for the removal of the dual-wielding system) and the ability to lock one's aim is something that could have been useful in Contra 4 as well. I just don't know why they bothered to make a port if they were going to change the play mechanics so much and replace two of the stages.

I was worried this wouldn't get released until late this year, due to the Wikipedia article saying that it wouldn't be released until "Winter 2011," but, well, I guess right now is technically Winter 2011. The latest issue of Game Informer had a very miniature review on one of the last pages for it from someone who has apparently played the full game, saying it's out in February. I go to check updates on Wikipedia, and they now claim it's due for February 16th.
Anyway, I'm still pumped for it! Hope you guys are, too.

On February 16 you said? Lucky! Another great game for January-February's wishlist.

I played a demo of it at Gamescom which terminated any and all interest I ever might have had in the game. It simply felt slow, tedious and boring. Oh and the visuals don't seem on par either.

I was wondering when a release date would be announced. I can't wait to play it!

I watched a demo of the first stage which has left me a bit wary. The level seemed unnecessarily long and full of enemies that didn't really pose any sort of threat and were organized in no way resembling good level design. I'm hoping they've fixed it up. At the very least, I think it'll still be a fun run n' gun, if a bit bland and not entirely true to the Contra name. I'm still looking forward to it, definitely.

I'm hoping Hard Corps: Uprising will at least be better than Contra 4 and Contra ReBirth. Contra 4 was just a glorified fan-game (it shouldn't had been called "Contra 4" anyway) and ReBirth was just a watered-down version of Contra 4.

While I love both 4 and ReBirth, I do hope Hard Corps: Uprising is good too. For some reason I am a little worried about how the game will turn out. So many things in it are different from other Contra games.

Glorified fan-game?
Are you serious?

I don't know what level I was plaing, but it was some generic desert stage and not only do I fully agree on your feelings ("we haven't had one of those enemies for a few screens, why not put one here now?"), the main issue of that particular level was that movement is already sloooooow in general, but it comes to a downright crawl when you are in the sand, which is pretty much impossoble to avoid.

See, my main worry here is that with any given game, if one has to ask "will they fix this by the time it's released?", the answer almost always turns out to be no. Still gonna get this though. Love me some Contras. And for the guy calling Contra 4 a glorified fan game, I'm going to paraphrase Abe Lincoln and say, well, someone should go bring me more glorified fan games.

I can see what he means about Contra 4. While I like it, there aren't really many "new" situations in the game. Almost everything in the game is a direct tribute to something from a previous Contra game. While every Contra game has had some kind of tribute or throwback to a previous game (ever since Contra III at least), they all at least had a number of unique situations and level themes. Contra 4 doesn't really deliver in that regard; they're all variations of things seen before.

I wouldn't even refer to Hard Corps: Uprising as a Contra game: The style is just too different, gameplay is off, characters are different, heck, even the name is only an allusion to Contra at best.
