Hi, all! New to the forums, here. I hope this request isn't breaking any rules, but if it is, I understand. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for good, reputable (i.e. not rife with viruses and other fun stuff) ROM sites. I was enjoying showing my 5-year-old some of the games I grew up on (he LOVED Cybernator), but a nasty virus quickly ended the good times. All I care about is 16-bit era and earlier (maaaaaybe PS1 for some of the RPGs).
Thanks in advance!

I've been using planetemu for the past 5 years or so without any problems. The site's in French, but still easy enough to navigate if you don't know the language. I remember I was 4 when my dad introduced me to the NES and Super Mario Bros. 3. I was screwed for life-- thanks, dad!... Nah, I don't regret anything. Hope the site works out for you, have fun sharing your favorites with your son.

I think Emuparadise is pretty good. BIOS's(often needed for disc based consoles/PC's) often aren't readily named properly, but the fact is they actually have a BIOS section. If you're the type to go for it, they also have complete rom sets.
For ISO's(discs, like for ps1) I'd recommend the forums at SNESorama. If not signing up at Emuparadise.

edgeemu is also one of, if not the best. You get 7z files with every version and of a given game you're going to download across all platforms (well, the ones that don't use CD's.)

You can still cop a nasty virus that works its way through unfortunately. Even without downloading anything. Rare for sure but it can happen.

I always used [site name removed] myself. Never had any problem with it, and the selection is pretty nice.

Am I the only person who goes to [site name removed] first? It has a weird point system, but as long as you're just downloading old stuff, it rarely matters. The advantage is that everything is very well labeled.

You can still cop a nasty virus that works its way through unfortunately. Even without downloading anything. Rare for sure but it can happen. I've never ever ever ever caught a virus from rom sites. And I've been to the ghettos and slums of rom sites. The only time I've heard of people catching hard-drive-deleting viruses is when they accidentally download them themselves or if they are browsing without an antivirus. But whatever, if you say it happened to you, then it did. If you use the rom sites provided here, you should not get any nasty virii. Spam yes, but no viruses.

Yeah, I'm not 1,000% sure the virus came from the roms, but I do know that I had never, ever, ever-times-infinity had a virus on my computer until I downloaded them. It IS completely possible, though, that with all my mad comp-skillz (/sarcasm) I bone-headedly did it to my self via troglodyte-ism. My wife, however, in addition to being a total babe, is a bad ass computer-warrior and gave that virus the what-for but quick! And she can cook! If you can be good, marry good! XD Thank you all for the recommendations, too! Pro-tip: Check out "Bio Metal" on the SNES for hilarious music and backgrounds that make it impossible to play! Wheeee!

Filestube.com is all I need for pretty much everything these days. (Blocking the Flash ads is a good idea, of course.) When there's a lot of stuff I want to download, I use Cryptload as a download manager.

Removing all links/almost-urls of sites that offer downloads for systems currently sold until further notice. If you want to share them, please use PMs.

I too recommend Emuparadise. It's now my choice for ROMs. They've got tons of ROMs of many games.
