I got Earthbound, Box and Strategy Guide/Instruction book when a local video store was liquidating their SNES stock a few years ago. They were actually selling really great stuff that goes for a shitload on Ebay now for 5 bucks a piece. EB was 10, I guess because they thought the big box meant it was worth more or something.
Play EB all the way through. It does weiiiiird things to some people.

Yes, the battle system in Earthbound was terrible. I'm glad the improved it in Mother 3. Also, I hope the characters in Mother 3 will actually talk. The characters in Earthbound were so quiet, and it wasn't funny.

They even made fun of that in the game, Ness can ONLY say "Yes" and "No." There's a point where someone asks if you can fill in the name of the Beetle's song ___terday. You can only choose between yes and no. People that like it for the humor may want to check out the upcoming RPG Atlus is publishing here, Metal Saga. It's the newest Metal Max game basically as well as the first one to actually come out in the US. Lighthearted and whacky post-apocalyptic adventure. Sort of like Robo-Trek but with tanks instead of mechs and lots of bounties to hunt.

Play EB all the way through. It does weiiiiird things to some people. Me too. When I was in high school, some new video store opened up and immediately starting liquidating their SNES stock. Got Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, Yoshi's Island, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy 3, all boxed (in varying conditions) for $10 each. Also before Babbages got bought out by Gamestop, all of their SNES games were $10. Got Mega Man X2, Mega Man 7 and a few other good ones this way. I remember passing by Ogre Battle and Harvest Moon because I didn't know what they were, and I kind of regret it, but I still made out well. Anyway, playing through again reminded me of some of the annoying quirks of the battle system - it FEELS really random. Like there's a high probability of critical attacks, for both you and the enemy. You also miss a lot, or the enemies don't attack for a turn or something. That just...bothers me. Practically all RPGs work on this but right now it feels like too much is out of the player's control. I guess this is because only Ness is in my party. Also, enemies that call other enemies into battle, which can then heal the one you were beating on, should be banned. Onto Metal Saga, I started a Metal Max article months ago but it never got anywhere. I had wanted to find Metal Saga cheap (and I couldn't, never dipped below $65) and then Atlus decided to localize it, so I decided to wait. I'm definitely grabbing it, and will probably continue after then.

The combat does get a little better after you get more characters. You'll be using a lot of defensive spells and such, it's pretty cool. Typically later on in the game, those actions where "punk stands around and does nothing" are actually the enemy casting support spells which is really cool.

I actually kinda liked the battle system. I found it fairly simple... though, since I'm not really an RPG fan on the whole, you can take that comment with a dash of pepper, by which I mean a grain of salt. Well... now THAT I can agree on. Trust me on this one, you can't put down the game once you get to Moonside. ;D

Har! Guess they've released a deluxe package with a special GBA Micro Mother Edition and a Franklin Badge.

I personally like Earthbound's battle system...a lot! The falling hp dial always kept me at the edge of my seat, saying to myself "please, guts, hold out!" I thought it was great...pacing of the game...not so much.
The difficulty at the beginning, particularly Onett and the Sharks gang was WAY too difficult to be so early in the game...in fact, after I struggled through that, the game all of a sudden seemed a lot easier (with a few exceptions of course). Overall, it's one of my favorite RPGs, for its humor, style, music, battles, and overall strangeness...strangeNESS...ha.
Anyways, here's hoping to Mother 3 coming out to all us English speaking countries!

Yeah, the dial was awesome. If you were quick, you could save your party members with a quick healing spell even if they suffered a killing blow.
One thing that bothers me is that there's undoubtably those super-rare items and weapons. The kind you spend 20 levels and beyond waiting for a monster to drop. Absolute hell for a completist like myself.

Absolute hell for a completist like myself. The sacred "1/128" items, yes. The "Gutsy Bat" and "Sword of Kings." Damned Sword of Kings...I HAD to have it...otherwise Poo would have seemed so bare... BTW, when I said guts, I meant the stat (in case people didn't know). "Guts" lowered the rate at which the hp dial lowered, and increased the chances of surviving a critical blow by 1 hp, even one that would have put you in the negative hp range. Also... The spiteful crow has a big grin on its face.

...I ended up leveling everyone to 85 until I was finally able to get the Sword of Kings.
All that for a small boost in attack power. Eesh.

Am I the only person here who actually likes Dragon Warrior's battle system? I thought it suited EB really well.

EB is a game I like enough to forgive the primitive battle system. Especially considering you can win fights instantly later on. For most random encounters, I usually turn on the auto battle. The running HP counter is great too.

To me, the best of the battles was in the text describing each attack. There were some funny moments such as the annoying old party man grumbling "about today's youth" or Pokey pretending to help Ness at the beginning.
