I'll admit, I'm seriously considering going through Single Player with just a pistol.

I've only ever used the assault rifle in both ME and ME2, so weapon variety means little to me.

I like having a variety of weapons to use for any given situation, but the Assault Rifle is my main one. It seems the most versatile by far.

Shotguns are okay against krogans, but they fire too slowly for my tastes, and don't have nearly enough ammo. I also never really use my powers, either.

I love using Incinerate and the cloak ability when playing as an Infiltrator. My only other character is a soldier though, so it's pretty much all about my weapons with him. I haven't tried the other classes yet, so I don't really know what they play like.

See, I thought powers were mostly useless in ME1, and then I played ME2 as a Soldier, so I really didn't have any to speak of. I pretty much tend to forget they even exist in the ME universe.

I was a Soldier in ME1, but the video showcasing the Vanguard made me change my mind for ME2 (I like to think my Shepard gained some biotic powers from his resurrection). Shotguns were really made for this class, since they're the perfect weapon for following up a Charge.

Now, the best thing to do after a charge is to nova or a heavy melee, besides with the extra damage after a charge you can kill anything after it fast with any kind of weapon.
So right now the best weapon for a Vanguard is a precise long distance weapon since they rule at close range but greatly suck when a enemy is not chargeable. You will not need to use a plain pistol because you can get +200% charge time with an avenger, that being said, the carnifex is a good poor man sniper rifle.
Ironic enough, I enjoy using a shotgun with an infiltrator, you can get close to the enemy while invisible and then greet them with a load of boomstick.
Talking about boomstick, Kinect recognizes it for equipping shotguns.

It's weird, when I played through as a soldier in 1 and 2 I mainly needed an assault rifle and rarely had to use skills outside of maybe Unity. Going through Insanity in ME2 as an infiltrator (which is sucky and tedious), the sniper rifle and stupid invisibility skill are invaluable...I just wish I'd get the fucking Viper sniper rifle already, the 10 shot limit/1 shot reload for the Mantis SUUUUUUUUUUUUUcks.

Come back to the Soldier fold... I will for 3, definitely. I'm debating restarting insanity as a soldier; people said that it's easiest as an Infiltrator but I'm not seeing it. At all.

Honestly I started enjoying Infiltrator more once I got the Assault Rifle proficiency unlocked. I went with that over the Widow rifle, because I love my assault rifles! Also the Locust SMG is a pretty nice substitute for the Assault Rifle, before you actually unlock that yourself.

ME3 needs clearer signs for which weapon is stronger. There was no way to tell if a DLC gun or one you found or one you bought was best, aside from just shooting guys at random.

I thought ME3 listed weapon stats? At least, it did according to the screenshots I saw. ME2, on the other hand...

In multiplayer the weapons have normal, silver or gold rarities for designing how good is a weapon.. in theory in reality they say you how heavy they are.. they are aiming for having the better weapon the heaviest but that is very relative as by example the claymore vs the scimitar shotguns, claymore is one hit kill but weights a quad and takes about half an hour to recharge so you can pick a claymore, do half the damage each hit but shoot about four time faster with a faster recharge time.
