It was along with Final Fantasy Versus XIII. They announced the whole Fabula Nova Crystallis together at the same time they announced Final Fantasy XIII.

Would it do as well as Square-Enix hopes? XIII sold well overall, but it has gotten much more negative feedback than X ever did.

Eh, never say never. I was one of the only persons that stayed on the L.A. Noire forums since it got announced in 2004. Same as for Hydrophobia which was also said to be canceled. The way this industry works you can never really be sure what was canceled or what's actually being made. Also, apparently Squeenix had a 'crystal' conference a little while ago, so the game is atleast being worked on.

A dollop of truth with a big heaping helping of rampant speculation.

I've got a brand new, untouched copy of FFXIII sitting on my shelf which I paid something like sixteen dollars for on Black Friday. I realize that was probably too much for the game. I mostly bought it because I couldn't resist being an observer to the train wreck.

I basically expect nothing of substance from any Square product at this point. Every so often a good one sneaks out, and I am pleasantly surprised, but I expect nothing.

The key point is it doesn't need to do nearly as well as XIII, if they apply the methods already used in X-2, which basically used very few new resources apart from the costumes and matching animations. That was the key concept of X-2, recycling existing tech and assets for a much lower break-even point.

Which makes it pretty different from Versus XIII, which on the other hand reuses the engine but little else, which is the reason it's taking so long to develop.

it's kinda sad that the more recent Final Fantasy Protagonists make me wish the next FF game WAS about a grizzled old bald space marine, despite how played out that type of character is via FPSes.

No, you shouldn't be sad at all. just imagine a heavy homosexual overtones with all steroid pumped male cast of space marines as opposed to FFX-2's girly tone. Hopefully, it will be a TPS ^_^;
