Out today on Xbox 360, pretty damn great. I was worried the 2D sprites would clash with the backgrounds, but the sprites are so well animated that it ends up looking awesome. I was also afraid the game would be rather sparse on enemies and low on challenge just from the empty-looking screenshots, but once I started dashing around my fears were put to rest. This is definitely seems like a worthwhile action game, and a worthy sequel. It's not simplified or scaled back in any way compared to other Contra games... except maybe challenge, and that is my one concern. On just my second try I was able to clear the demo (first level up to the boss) without getting hit on arcade mode. There is another mode with permanently unlockable weapons/upgrades, but I wonder if there's any point beyond just seeing the extra weapons if arcade is supposed to be the harder mode. Tough to judge just based on one level, but it was a great first impression.

Is it just me, or is the first stage way to effing long? Also, it's total b.s. that a game based on Contra: Hard Corps would feature 4 characters, but you have to pay extra to get the third and fourth.

Why sell the whole package when you can arbitrarily cut some content out and squeeze your customers out of more money?

I would feel less cheated if they just charged $20 from the get go.

Really, I have lost a lot of faith in modern developers. I know it's echoing what many have said before but I am not happy with paying for a online only game that might dissapear from servers and in some cases- you have to stay online to even play. Then full price home releases - stuff that used to be unlockables- or in this case with extra characters- a out of the box feature in the 16bit era- you have to pay for it as DLC or buy special editions from certain retail outlets? Makes me glad I was stock piling all these retrogames- I guess all these 90hour PS1/2 rpgs are going to finally see use if the future generations of consoles keep heading down this avenue...
And back on target- I would like to give this a whirl at some point- I just wish someone would release a 'best of XBLA/PSN" disc with stuff like Shadow Complex, Bionic Commando Rearmed and Braid on it cause I just don't feel comfortable trusting these companies anymore.

The fourth character seems like she's going to be a challenge to learn. She only uses a sword and doesn't get any long-range attacks. At least, from what I've seen.

Yeah, Sayuri is mostly close range but she does insane damage. You can actually charge her sword to use long-range attacks, too. Haven't tried Harley yet.
I of course bought the game, and so far it's very well-balanced in arcade mode. Even with the 3 continues I only got part way through stage 2 (although that was my first attempt). The checkpoints are nicely distributed so it feels like the game is really giving you a second chance if you use a continue. Not sure how long each level is going to be, but if each one is as long as the first (hopefully not) it'll be one hell of a game to complete on a credit-- a real marathon. I think you gets lots of bonus points and some extra lives if you beat a stage without screwing up, though. Pretty soon I'll see if this is true.
The dlc doesn't bother me too much in this case. There will be some people who'll be satisfied without the two characters, but I love action games and Contra so I gladly paid the extra 400 points to get the optimal experience.
Anyone else having trouble with the leaderboards? I only have a silver account so I know I can't do online coop, but I should still be able to see scores right?

Hearing about this game is killing me, because I can't afford it until next month (thanks a lot, Ys). At least the news seems good so far.

The levels (from what I've seen) lack the typical miniboss gameplay that I loved in Contra III, Shattered Soldier and Contra Hard Corps. This looks like it's mainly about running'n'gunning through the levels with very few memorable contraesque scenes... I've seen a scene with a motorbike, but even that looked kinda lame compared to what we're used to in Contra...

I've had experience playing up through half of level 3 now and rest assured that's not the case. It's not quite Hard Corps and Shattered Soldier amount of mini-bosses, there are about 2 or 3 per stage, but each level is quite diverse in looks and in how certain parts feel with unique enemies. It's just as well choreographed as earlier Contras. Each section is memorable, very well-paced. It's not just an endless stream of random badguys getting caught in your gunfire with one boss at the end.

Running should be default. The normal walking speed is painfully slow.
I also don't like how the characters look exactly like Guilty Gear/Blazblue. I detest that style...
Like with any ArcSys game so far, the thing I like most is the music, although it (the first level tune) makes me even more want to just play Contra instead.

I wish I had a PS3 or Xbox 360 right now. It's good to see the feedback for Uprising seems to be positive so far. I've been playing a lot of Super Contra lately on MAME, trying to complete the Hard setting (my aim is to complete each difficulty setting like I did with the first arcade game, including the JPN version's "Super Hard" second loop). It's pretty tough, even though I've managed to memorized the pattern of the final stage by "practicing" a lot in it. Yet, despite all the cheapness and flaws the game has, I'm hooked on it (to the point that I wore out the firing button on my PC gamepad). I'm looking forward to Uprising to see if it can be just as addicting.

The score boards might be down Because in Level 2 and 5 they is a trick with instantly spawning enemys (crocodiles and wooden crates) and that makes your score multiplier go up like crazy along with giving you plenty of money as well.
Level 6 boss can be unfair on Multiplayer though sometimes if you die it spawns you back on a platform that instanly explodes killing you again
