Also, it's the reason I'm really, really worried about the industry-wide collective boner over LA Noire. Frankly, I'm just sick of games that want to be movies in general. I agree 100%. The reviews I am reading of this game trouble me because they basically go, "The combat and driving are both pretty lame and there really isn't much to do in the game but follow the plot but wow those faces! And the acting is really good! Can't wait to see ALL THE GAMES using this face tech, especially Pokemon! FACES, so 99%!"

There's plenty of room for both styles. I loved both Heavy Rain and MadWorld.

Noire is another glorified straight-to-DVD movie where you're forced to play a minigame to unlock the next chapter?

It is so fashionable right now to shit all over L.A. Noire and basically anything Rockstar does but if you can get over your dipshit nerd prejudices and play it, it's an excellent game. It does what it set out to do and it does it well. It's a flawed game, but the flaws are negligible and absorbed by the stellar atmosphere and attention to detail. It's a beautiful game stylistically, musically, and visually.
I say all this as someone who hates every game Rockstar has made except Bully. I know that Rockstar didn't specifically make this game, but their involvement is obvious throughout. If you're one of those high and mighty geeks with the fork up your ass who can't help but criticize every tiny flaw a game has, go stick to whatever pet genre lives up to your ridiculously high standards. If you're the kind of person who can sit down and just enjoy a game for what it is and appreciate the lengths the developers went to to create an authentic experience, play LA Noire.
As an aside, don't expect facetracking tech to be appearing in games any time soon. The budget constraints alone are enough to force it out of the reach of 99% of the games that will hit the market in the next few years. Instead of whining about it, try to appreciate it.

Yeah, L.A. Noire is closer to PC adventure game with slight traits from Shenmue, GTA, and Phoenix Wright and more of a focus on puzzles involving people and truth telling.

So basically L.A. Noire is another glorified straight-to-DVD movie where you're forced to play a minigame to unlock the next chapter? What I posted was just the impression I get from reading reviews. They could all be lying. I guess the only way to find out is to spend $70 and find out. To be fair, it's not all just allegedly shitty combat and apparently broken driving (both of which you can skip if you fail them) and glorious facial animation. There is also a lot of going from one place to another in there.

This, but more for the "you can only carry like two guns" thing Thank you Kurt- I've hated this since it's happened. You know what rocked in Doom, Duke and Quake? Tonnes of interesting ways to kill your enemies and like you said, not having to stop every other step to trade one in. Games are escapism- don't tell me "oh it's unrealistic for you to carry 2 guns man" when I can gun down an entire army cheers ¬_¬ Geras of War- not bad at all, I thought it was a nice take on RE4 when I first played it - now I blame it for the badly thought out multiplayer being shoved into everything now. (Still a good game mind you). I am an antisocial gamer- don't tell me I can't access half the game or force me to play through with a retarded AI helper to get enjoyment out of a game or the full experience ¬_¬ Didn't Counter Strike start that? I'm not sure who is the blame for so many games being 20+ hour experiences now too- I don't have time for that anymore. It's totally killed RPG's for me. I found Ys a breath of fresh air and was dying to play Ys Seven...til someone said it hit the 30+ hour mark ¬_¬ You can mostly blame game reviewers for that (and the fact that the industry is so reluctant to adjust price to "value" vs the other way round) What game invented the collect-a-ton? Not sure about invented, but I think Donkey Kong Country popularized it? Super Mario World may take some blame, too. There wasn't any collectible stuff you "needed", but it started that trend of platformers were playing through isn't enough, no you "need" those 100% (or 96 exits in this case), too. Behold and fear, Shinobi 3ds pretty much confirmed :/: Wow, Nintendo Power looks like that in this day and age? On first glance I thought it was an issue from the mid-90s until I noticed that Sonic wouldn't make any sense then.

I wish Metroid had less of an impact; mainly because I find Metroid's core gameplay very dull and unsatisfying, and generally boring, yet it's considered one of the best-designed series ever and any game that decides to feature "Metroid-like" gameplay becomes heavily anticipated by a huge number of followers.

I have the same, but I can see people who like exploration enjoying. I just don't I want more thrown at me in the stage designs... more of an rollercoaster ride. But I hate it when people shout bring back bring back "insert 80s/90s action platformer franchise"... and put in Metroidvania elements that would be great... yeah no :/ About LA Noir, needs more pulp. I would love it if it was more like this without the anime art direction: Can't that I like adventure games in general though Not my genre.

Frankly, I'm just sick of games that want to be movies in general. Thiiiiiiisssssssss goddamnit. This was part of why Lords of Shadow made me throw up in my mouth a little. Of course, I can't deny that movie-like elements can make a game more awesome. For example, where would Silent Hill be without Jacob's Ladder, Twelve Monkeys, Eraserhead, etc.? My main problem is that games are becoming little more than CG movies with occasional button prompts. Stylistic elements are one thing, but when the game is merely a vehicle for plot and bad writing (Lords of Shadow, Metal Gear Solid), then it starts being obnoxious. If I wanted to see a movie, I wouldn't have bought a game, dumbfucks!

I love Metroidvanias. I mean, there could be a Madden Metroidvania where you have to collect the special abilities of football players to continue on and I'd gobble it up. If anything I want that style to have MORE of an impact.

I love the concept for this thread.
And I agree with the comments on God of War and Gears of War. Perhaps games with "War" in the title just need to stop being so uppity.
